Evaluation of effectiveness of a sexuality education program for parents of male adolescents: promoting of parent-adolescent sexual communication

Theory of planned behavior-based cross-sectional study of family sex education for preschoolers in China: rural-urban comparative analysis

PURPOSE

The impact of sexual assault or sexual health problems on children and their families due to poor sex education is severe and devastating. Herein, we examined the current status of Preschoolers' Family Sex Education (PFSE) program in Luzhou City, China, and the determinants of parents' practice, focusing on urban-rural differences.

METHODS

Using multistage randomized cluster sampling, 4322 parents were recruited from 24 kindergartens. A web-based, self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was used to measure parents' perceptions, attitudes, and practices regarding PFSE. Binary logistic regression was performed to analyze the determinants of parental implementation of PFSE.

RESULTS

The knowledge pass rate, positive attitude rate, and practice pass rate of PFSE among parents of preschoolers were only 47.15%, 34.42%, and 69.04%, respectively, and the rates in rural areas were significantly lower than those in urban areas. Parents' practices were weakest on physiology education and sexual health education. For the total population, PFSE knowledge, attitudes, sense of responsibility for family education, number of difficulties with sex education, support for PFSE, and age of child significantly influenced parents' PFSE practice pass rates. The determinants of urban parents' PFSE practices were similar to those of the total population, but rural parents' PFSE practices were also significantly influenced by left-behind child status.

CONCLUSION

The PFSE in Luzhou could be improved by increasing parents' attitudes and social communication, especially for those living in rural areas. Effective implementation and practices of PFSE require correcting the attitudes of parents, improving parents' sexual knowledge, and strengthening social communication so as to promote the sexual and reproductive health of children in China, especially those left behind in rural areas.

Parent-adolescent sexual and reproductive health information communication in Ghana

BACKGROUND

A culturally sensitive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information communication intervention which is effective can improve SRH information communication (IC) between parents and their adolescents. This facilitates adolescents' informed SRH decisions to optimise positive SRH outcomes.

AIM

The aim of this article was to integrate the findings from a systematic review and a qualitative study on sexual and reproductive health information communication and the considerations to make in adapting an effective parent-adolescent SRH information communication intervention from the systematic review findings.

METHODS

Explanatory sequential Mixed Methods Research was used; first, a quantitative Systematic Review was conducted in lower-and-middle-income countries, utilising Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) software for reviews. The systematic review findings were then explained, utilizing an exploratory qualitative design in the second phase of the study. A purposive sample of ten parent-adolescent pairs was selected from Asante Akyem North Municipality of Ghana and all participants were interviewed individually. The sample was based on the demographics highlighted in the systematic review. A semi-structured interview guide was developed from the findings of the systematic review.

RESULTS

The results confirmed that effective SRH information communication interventions are associated with parent-adolescent SRH information communication skills. SRH communication is also influenced by the SRH information parents and adolescents have and the personal and social motivation to communicate the information. The method of intervention delivery, the experts involved, and the place of delivery were also identified as important issues to consider in adapting and implementing an intervention.

CONCLUSION

The study has provided information on the components of a culturally sensitive SRH information communication intervention. The contextual information gathered, which explained the systematic review findings, will be helpful in the adaptation of SRH information communication intervention.

The effect of sexuality education based on the information, motivation, and behavioral skills model on improving the teachers' professional competence

Introduction

Professional competence is the basic need of teachers in effective sexuality education. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of school-based sexuality education (SBSE) on teachers' professional competence (TPC), using the information, motivation, and behavioral skills (IMB) model, in boys' schools.

Methods

A randomized controlled field trial was conducted on 60 teachers who taught adolescents aged 11-19 years and were selected from 12 public boys' schools in Sari, northern Iran. Two groups (intervention and control) were assigned using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method. Researchers utilized a self-reported socio-demographic questionnaire and an IMB model-based questionnaire to assess the effects of the educational program. Four groups of 6-8 people underwent six 2-h training sessions based on an IBM model. Teachers were assessed before, immediately, and six weeks after the intervention to evaluate the outcome variables. The data were analyzed using the software SPSS-V19 and Chi-square test, Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Repeated Measure ANOVA.

Results

There were no significant differences between intervention and control groups at the baseline in socio-demographic characteristics and TPC (p > 0.05). The mean scores of TPC in sexuality education in every three dimensions of knowledge (P = 0.001), skill (P = 0.002), and attitude (P = 0.007) were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group.

Conclusions

The results of this study show that by using the SBSE program based on the IMB model, the TPC for teaching sexual issues can be improved.
