Sexual stimulant effects of the mixture of Mondia whitei, Dracaena arborea, and Bridelia ferruginea in normal and prediabetic male Wistar rats

Ethnomedicinal, phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological profile of Mondia whitei: A review

Mondia whitei is an aromatic plant native to sub-Saharan Africa. This spice is commonly used in the treatment of various diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. This review was undertaken to provide updated information on the botanical, phytochemical, pharmacological, and toxicological knowledge of this plant of high relevance to African populations. Moreover, its mechanism of action was described based on previous experimental studies. Data were compiled from various online databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Springer link, Taylor and Francis, and SciFinder. Additionally, books, book chapters and proceedings were used as secondary sources. The chemical structures of phytocompounds were drawn using PubChem Sketcher program. M. whitei contains various phytocompounds, including reducing sugars, triterpenes, steroids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, hydrogen cyanide, carotenoid, oxalate and phytate. Moreover, para-pentylphenyl-benzoate, (-)-Loliolide, 5-chloropropacin, propacin, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde, isovanillin, 9-hexacosene, 2-hexen-1-ol, and heptacosane were isolated from this spice. M. whitei has several pharmacological benefits, including aphrodisiac, pro-fertile, pro-erectile, androgenic, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antimalarial, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidepressant, antidiarrheal, hepatoprotective, antisickling, and anticancer activities. Toxicological studies showed an LD50 of above 5000 mg/Kg and no signs of toxicity after one week of oral treatment. The aphrodisiac effect of this spice is one of its main activities, supported by numerous experimental studies. Because M. whitei delays contractions of the bulbospongiosus muscles, its aphrodisiac effect could be mediated through the modulation of the spinal generator of ejaculation. This can justify its folkloric use in the treatment of premature ejaculation.

Medicinal Plants Used in the Management of Sexual Dysfunction, Infertility and Improving Virility in the East African Community: A Systematic Review

Sexual disorders such as erectile dysfunction (ED), sterility, and sexual inappetence represent some of the complex reproductive challenges that require addressing the underlying causes. The aim of this paper was to systematically synthesize literature on the ethnobotany, phytochemistry, bioactivities, and safety of plants used as remedies for managing sexual dysfunction and infertility, and improving fertility and virility in the EAC. Through an extensive review conducted in multidisciplinary electronic databases, 171 plant species were identified to have been reported for the management of sexual inappetence (i.e., used as aphrodisiacs, 39.4%), ED (35.9%), infertility (18.7%), and increasing fertility (6.0%). The most used plants are Mondia whitei, Acalypha villicaulis, Combretum illairii, Erythrina abyssinica, Pappea capensis, Rhus vulgaris, and Warburgia ugandensis while roots (44.9%), leaves (21.8%), stem and root barks (16.7%) of shrubs (35%), trees (31%), herbs (26%), and climbers (8%) are the preferred organs for making decoctions (69%). The research strides to date indicate that Citropsis articulata, Cola acuminata, Ekebergia capensis, Plumbago zeylanica, Tarenna graveolens, Urtica massaica, and Zingiber officinale have been assessed for their bioactivity. The majority (71.4%) of the plants either increased testosterone levels and mounting frequency or elicited prosexual stimulatory effects in male rats. More studies investigating the relevant pharmacological activities (aphrodisiac, fertility, and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitory activities), safety aspects, responsible compounds, and clinical studies are warranted to establish the pharmacological potential of the unstudied species and elucidate the mechanism of action of the bioactive compounds.

Dracaena arborea improves sperm characteristics and antioxidant enzymes in adult male rats with experimental varicocele

Objective:

We evaluated the preventive effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Dracaena arborea on sperm characteristics and oxidative stress markers in adult male rats with varicocele.

Methods:

Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 6 groups (6 animals/group) and treated for 30 days as follows: (1), normal rats receiving distilled water (10 ml/kg); (2), sham operated rats receiving distilled water (10 ml/kg); (3), varicocele rats receiving distilled water (10 ml/kg); (4), varicocele rats receiving vitamin E (150 mg/kg); (5-6), varicocele rats administered respectively with aqueous (500 mg/kg) and ethanolic (100 mg/kg) extracts of D. arborea. All rats (except normal and sham-operated groups) underwent varicocele induction. At the end of the treatment period, sexual organ weights, oxidative stress, sperm characteristics and some biochemical parameters were measured.

Results:

A significant decrease (p<0.01) in sperm density (137.81±7.76 vs. 175.83±4.86), sperm motility (55.43±4.49 vs. 77.96± 3.15) and sperm normality (44.75±2.80 vs. 79.25±1.84) was noticed in varicocele-untreated rats compared with controls. Varicocele also induced oxidative stress by decreasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, and increasing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. These alterations were prevented by D. arborea. For instance, the aqueous extract of D. arborea (500 mg/kg) significantly increased (p<0.05-0.001) testes and epididymis weights, sperm viability and sperm motility, while the ethanolic extract (100 mg/kg) increased sperm normality compared with varicocele-untreated rats. D. arborea extracts also decreased MDA levels, but elevated catalase activity.

Conclusions:

Dracaena arborea prevents the deleterious effects of varicocele and could be considered as an alternative treatment of this physiopathology.
