Abstract
Neglected avian blood parasites of the genus Haemoproteus (Haemoproteidae) have recently attracted attention due to the application of molecular diagnostic tools, which unravelled remarkable diversity of their exo-erythrocytic (or tissue) stages both regarding morphology and organ tropism levels. The development of haemoproteids might result in pathologies of internal organs, however the exo-erythrocytic development (EED) of most Haemoproteus species remains unknown. Seven individual birds - Curruca communis (1) and Phylloscopus trochilus (6) - with high gametocytaemia (between 1% and 24%) of Haemoproteus angustus n. sp. (hCWT7) and Haemoproteus palloris (lineage hWW1) were sampled in Lithuania, and their internal organs were examined extensively by parallel application of histology and chromogenic in situ hybridization methods. Tissue stages were apparently absent, suggesting that the parasitaemia was not accompanied by detectable tissue merogony. Haemoproteus angustus n. sp. was described and characterized morphologically and molecularly. Sexual process and ookinete development of the new species readily occurred in vitro, and a unique character for Haemoproteus parasites was discovered - the obligatory development of several tiny residual bodies, which were associated with intracellular transformation of both macrogametocytes and microgametocytes before their escape from the host cells and formation of gametes. A DNA haplotype network was constructed with lineages that cluster in one clade with the lineage hCWT7. This clade consists of lineages mostly found in Curruca birds, indicating specificity for birds of this genus. The lineage hCWT7 is mainly a parasite of C. communis. Most reports of this lineage came from Turkey, with only a few records in Europe, mostly in birds wintering in Africa where transmission probably occurs. This study highlights unexpected difficulties in the research of EED even when using sensitive molecular diagnostic tools and extends information about transformation in early stages of gametogenesis in haemosporidian parasites.

Abstract
Understanding variation in physiological traits across taxa is a central question in evolutionary biology that has wide-ranging implications in biomedicine, disease ecology, and environmental protection. Sialic acid (Sia), and in particular, 5-N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), is chemically bound to galactose and the underlying glycan via α2-3 or α2-6 glycosidic linkage (i.e., Siaα2-3Galactose or Siaα2-6Galactose), conferring two different cell surface structures that affects cell to cell communication and interactions with foreign agents including microparasites and toxins. As an initial step towards understanding variation of Sia across the class Aves, we collected red blood cells (RBCs or erythrocytes) and measured Sia quantity in 76 species and 340 individuals using HPLC-MS/MS and glycosidic linkage type in 24 species and 105 individuals using hemagglutination assay. Although Sia quantity did not, α2-6 glycosidic linkage did exhibit a discernable phylogenetic pattern as evaluated by a phylogenetic signal (λ) value of 0.7. Sia quantity appeared to be higher in after hatch year birds than hatch year birds (P < 0.05); moreover, ~80% of the measured Sia across all individuals or species was expressed by ~20% of the individuals or species. Lastly, as expected, we detected a minimal presence of 5-N-glycolylneuraminic acid in the avian RBCs tested. These data provide novel insights and a large baseline dataset for further study on the variability of Sia in the class Aves which might be useful for understanding Sia dependent processes in birds.

Abstract
The study has explored two conservative biomarkers, porphyrin pattern in guano and methemoglobin levels in blood of Columba livia, in order to assay their potential use for monitoring toxic effects induced by exposure to urban air pollution. Fieldwork was conducted between October 2003 and June 2005 in the city of Milan, Italy, by sampling the pigeons in different areas almost twice a week. Six air contaminants, CO, PM10, NO(2), O(3), SO(2), and C(6)H(6), plus polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine particles, temperature, and UV index, were considered. Protoporphyrins from pigeon excreta sampled outdoors were always higher than in indoor animals, particularly in winter. A positive correlation (p < 0.001) of protoporphyrin with PAHs was observed. In terms of the values of methemoglobinemia, animals exposed to urban air showed significant differences from season to season but only in summer and autumn did the outdoor pigeons show higher values than indoor animals. In summer, a regression model with a positive correlation between O(3) and benzene was determined (p < 0.01). The use of Columba livia as a sentinel for urban air pollution as well as for detecting complex interactions between contaminants in the urban air pollutant mixture was discussed.
