Acute and sub-acute toxicity assessment of the standardized extract of Sanguisorba minor in vivo

Recognising the role of ruderal species in restoration of degraded lands

Ruderal plants are an important component of plant communities that develop on the range of anthropogenically degraded lands. Yet they were highly neglected and not recognised as desirable for restoration purposes. The aim of this study was to analyse the potential for using ruderal species in restoration processes and to identify preliminary criteria for species selection that could be included in ecological restoration of degraded man-made habitats under future conditions of increased human disturbance and climate changes. The desirable characteristics of the species depend primarily on the type of habitat to be restored, with plant height, specific leaf area, rooting depth and seed characteristics being the most important traits. The recognised ecosystem services of the species analysed show that the provisioning and regulating services are well represented, particularly erosion control, pollination, phytoremediation and other soil quality improvements. Most of the dominant and diagnostic ruderal species from the man-made habitats of the north-western Balkan Peninsula are sensitive to climate change and their potential distribution range is expected to decrease at the European scale. Higher certain ecological indicator values, as well as values for disturbance severity, frequency and soil disturbance indices were found for species that are expected to increase their range. Ruderal species are becoming increasingly important for restoration purposes, as the focus shifts to the significance of early successional species. The inclusion of ruderal species in the restoration of degraded sites should be based on criteria such as: non-invasiveness, plant traits favourable for colonisation (height, SLA, seed traits, rooting depth), values of ecological and disturbance indices, provision of ecosystem services, and change of distribution range under changing climate conditions.

Sanguisorba minor Scop.: An Overview of Its Phytochemistry and Biological Effects

Since ancient times, many plants have been cultivated for their nutritional and medicinal properties. The genus Sanguisorba has been used for medicinal purposes for more than 2000 years. These species are distributed in temperate, arctic, or alpine areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Elongated, imparipinnate leaves and densely clustered flower heads are characteristics of the genus Sanguisorba. While Sanguisorba officinalis L. is mainly known for its significant medicinal applications, Sanguisorba minor Scop. is beginning to attract greater interest for its chemical composition and biological effects. Our research collected extensive information on Sanguisorba minor, including its history, taxonomy, habitat, and distribution, as well as its bioactive components and biological activities. In addition to electron microscopy of plant parts (root, stems, and leaves), which is described for the first time in the literature in the case of S. minor, the study also provides information on potential pests or beneficial insects that may be present. Our goal was to provide important information that will serve as a solid foundation for upcoming research on Sanguisorba minor Scop.

Enhanced wound-healing efficacy of electrospun mesoporous hydroxyapatite nanoparticle-loaded chitosan nanofiber developed using pluronic F127

One of the goals of wound repairing is to mimic the function and architecture of the native extracellular matrix (ECM). To this end, for the first time, we used pluronic F127 and mesoporous rod-like hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (mr-HAP NPs) simultaneously to prepare a novel low-diameter electrospun ECM-mimicking wound dressing based on a mixture of chitosan and polyethylene oxide. F127 is used as a surface tension regulator of the polymer solution. In addition, F127 has the special ability to reduce the size of nanofibers. mr-HAP NPs are used as cell proliferation accelerators which also improve the mechanical properties and water uptake capacity of the as-prepared dressing. The average size of nanofibers in the presence of F127 was about 110 nm which was >2.5 times lower than nanofibers prepared without F127. The water uptake capacity was evaluated to investigate the wound exudate absorption capacity of the wound dressing. It was observed that the incorporation of mr-HAP NPs into wound dressing structure increases the water uptake capacity by >2.5 times. Alongside the evaluation of cytocompatibility through in vitro cell viability assay, the wound healing efficacy was also determined in full-thickness skin wounds in a rat model for 15 days. The cytocompatible wound dressing showed significantly higher wound closure efficacy than the control group so the wounds healed entirely on the last day of the treatment period. As well, the pathology analysis proved better granulation tissue development and greater re-epithelialization. These findings are by virtue of the improved mechanical properties, accelerated cell migration and proliferation, proper environment for oxygen exchange, and enhanced exudate uptake of the wound dressing. These all are due to the presence of F127 and mr-HAP.
