Segmentation of Brain Tissues from MRI Images Using Multitask Fuzzy Clustering Algorithm

In recent years, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image segmentation has drawn considerable attention. MRI image segmentation result provides a basis for medical diagnosis. The segmentation result influences the clinical treatment directly. Nevertheless, MRI images have shortcomings such as noise and the inhomogeneity of grayscale. The performance of traditional segmentation algorithms still needs further improvement. In this paper, we propose a novel brain MRI image segmentation algorithm based on fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm to improve the segmentation accuracy. First, we introduce multitask learning strategy into FCM to extract public information among different segmentation tasks. It combines the advantages of the two algorithms. The algorithm enables to utilize both public information among different tasks and individual information within tasks. Then, we design an adaptive task weight learning mechanism, and a weighted multitask fuzzy C-means (WMT-FCM) clustering algorithm is proposed. Under the adaptive task weight learning mechanism, each task obtains the optimal weight and achieves better clustering performance. Simulated MRI images from McConnell BrainWeb have been used to evaluate the proposed algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method provides more accurate and stable segmentation results than its competitors on the MRI images with various noise and intensity inhomogeneity.

An Intelligent Solution for Automatic Garment Measurement Using Image Recognition Technologies

Global digitization trends and the application of high technology in the garment market are still too slow to integrate, despite the increasing demand for automated solutions. The main challenge is related to the extraction of garment information-general clothing descriptions and automatic dimensional extraction. In this paper, we propose the garment measurement solution based on image processing technologies, which is divided into two phases, garment segmentation and key points extraction. UNet as a backbone network has been used for mask retrieval. Separate algorithms have been developed to identify both general and specific garment key points from which the dimensions of the garment can be calculated by determining the distances between them. Using this approach, we have resulted in an average 1.27 cm measurement error for the prediction of the basic measurements of blazers, 0.747 cm for dresses and 1.012 cm for skirts.

Defect Recognition of Roll-to-Roll Printed Conductors Using Dark Lock-in Thermography and Localized Segmentation

The demand for flexible large area optoelectronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is growing. Roll-to-roll (R2R) printing enables cost-efficient industrial production of optoelectronic devices. The performance of electronic devices may significantly suffer from local electrical defects. The dark lock-in infrared thermography (DLIT) method is an effective non-destructive testing (NDT) tool to identify such defects as hot spots. In this study, a DLIT inspection system was applied to visualize the defects of R2R printed silver conductors on flexible plastic substrates. A two-stage automated defect recognition (ADR) methodology was proposed to detect and localize two types of typical electrical defects, which are caused by complete or partial breaks on the printed conductive wires, based on localized segmentation and thresholding methods.

A Survey of Brain Tumor Segmentation and Classification Algorithms

A brain Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a single individual consists of several slices across the 3D anatomical view. Therefore, manual segmentation of brain tumors from magnetic resonance (MR) images is a challenging and time-consuming task. In addition, an automated brain tumor classification from an MRI scan is non-invasive so that it avoids biopsy and make the diagnosis process safer. Since the beginning of this millennia and late nineties, the effort of the research community to come-up with automatic brain tumor segmentation and classification method has been tremendous. As a result, there are ample literature on the area focusing on segmentation using region growing, traditional machine learning and deep learning methods. Similarly, a number of tasks have been performed in the area of brain tumor classification into their respective histological type, and an impressive performance results have been obtained. Considering state of-the-art methods and their performance, the purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of three, recently proposed, major brain tumor segmentation and classification model techniques, namely, region growing, shallow machine learning and deep learning. The established works included in this survey also covers technical aspects such as the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, pre- and post-processing techniques, feature extraction, datasets, and models' performance evaluation metrics.

Sleep Quality Detection Based on EEG Signals Using Transfer Support Vector Machine Algorithm

BACKGROUND

In recent years, with the acceleration of life rhythm and increased pressure, the problem of sleep disorders has become more and more serious. It affects people's quality of life and reduces work efficiency, so the monitoring and evaluation of sleep quality is of great significance. Sleep staging has an important reference value in sleep quality assessment. This article starts with the study of sleep staging to detect and analyze sleep quality. For the purpose of sleep quality detection, this article proposes a sleep quality detection method based on electroencephalography (EEG) signals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This method first preprocesses the EEG signals and then uses the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for feature extraction. Finally, the transfer support vector machine (TSVM) algorithm is used to classify the feature data.

RESULTS

The proposed algorithm was tested using 60 pieces of data from the National Sleep Research Resource Library of the United States, and sleep quality was evaluated using three indicators: sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Experimental results show that the classification performance of the TSVM classifier is significantly higher than those of other comparison algorithms. This further validated the effectiveness of the proposed sleep quality detection method.

A Novel Brain MRI Image Segmentation Method Using an Improved Multi-View Fuzzy c-Means Clustering Algorithm

Background: The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image segmentation method mainly refers to the division of brain tissue, which can be divided into tissue parts such as white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The segmentation results can provide a basis for medical image registration, 3D reconstruction, and visualization. Generally, MRI images have defects such as partial volume effects, uneven grayscale, and noise. Therefore, in practical applications, the segmentation of brain MRI images has difficulty obtaining high accuracy.

Materials and Methods: The fuzzy clustering algorithm establishes the expression of the uncertainty of the sample category and can describe the ambiguity brought by the partial volume effect to the brain MRI image, so it is very suitable for brain MRI image segmentation (B-MRI-IS). The classic fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is extremely sensitive to noise and offset fields. If the algorithm is used directly to segment the brain MRI image, the ideal segmentation result cannot be obtained. Accordingly, considering the defects of MRI medical images, this study uses an improved multiview FCM clustering algorithm (IMV-FCM) to improve the algorithm’s segmentation accuracy of brain images. IMV-FCM uses a view weight adaptive learning mechanism so that each view obtains the optimal weight according to its cluster contribution. The final division result is obtained through the view ensemble method. Under the view weight adaptive learning mechanism, the coordination between various views is more flexible, and each view can be adaptively learned to achieve better clustering effects.

Results: The segmentation results of a large number of brain MRI images show that IMV-FCM has better segmentation performance and can accurately segment brain tissue. Compared with several related clustering algorithms, the IMV-FCM algorithm has better adaptability and better clustering performance.
