Out-of-band exclusive frequency-domain MIMO equalization with the reduced-overlap-and-save method for scalable mode multiplexed signal transmission

We present computationally-efficient implementation techniques of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency-domain equalization (FDE) that deals with a modal dispersion effect underlying in long-haul mode-division-multiplexed (MDM) signal transmission. Computational complexity reduction comes from twofold approaches: the first is out-of-band-exclusive (OBE) FDE for removing redundant computations in MIMO-FDE processing by taking a practical signal bandwidth occupation into account. A second appoarch, referred to as overlapping-reduced (OR) FDE, further reduces the complexity by modifying an overlapping ratio in the overlap-and-save FDE method to below 0.5. We show that OBE-FDE reduces complexity for processing with a larger number of spatial channels compared with the conventional FDE, and that the overlapping ratio is minimized up to 0.25 by the OR-FDE approach. Also shown is an experimental demonstration using the results of three-mode MDM transmission with different inter-mode coupling scenarios, verifying that the complexity is decreased by up to 37 % with negligible deterioration in signal performance by using the proposed method.

Low-Complexity Chromatic Dispersion Equalization FIR Digital Filter for Coherent Receiver

This paper proposes a novel and efficient low-complexity chromatic dispersion equalizer (CDE) based on finite impulse response (FIR) filter architecture for polarization-multiplexed coherent optical communication systems. The FIR filter coefficients are optimized by weights to reduce the energy leakage caused by the truncation effect, and then quantization is used uniformly to reduce the number of real number additions and real number multiplications by utilizing the diversity of the quantized coefficients. Using Optisystem 15 to build a coherent optical communication system for simulation and experimental demonstration, the results show that after the filter coefficients are optimized by weights. Compared with the time-domain chromatic dispersion equalizer (TD-CDE), the proposed design has a lower bit error rate (BER) and better equalization effect. When the transmission distance is 4000 km and the system quantization stages M = 16, the multiplication operation and addition operations reduce computing resources by 99% and 43%, and the BER only increases by 5%. Compared with frequency-domain chromatic dispersion equalizer (FD-CDE), widely used in long-distance communication, the multiplication operation reduces computing resources by 30%. The proposed method provides a new idea for high-performance CDE in long-distance coherent optical communication systems.

Performance of momentum-based frequency-domain MIMO equalizer in the presence of feedback delay

A frequency-domain multiple-input multiple-output (FD-MIMO) equalizer employing a momentum-based gradient descent update algorithm is proposed for polarization multiplexing coherent receivers. Its performance in operation with dynamically varying optical channels is investigated and the impact of filter update delays, arising from the latency of the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) and other digital signal processing (DSP) operations in the feedback loop, is assessed. We show that the proposed momentum-based gradient descent algorithm used to control the equalizer response has significantly greater tolerance to feedback delay than the conventional gradient descent algorithm. We considered a 92 Gbaud dual-polarization 64 QAM receiver, with DSP operating at two samples per symbol, and with the equalizer operating on blocks of 512 and 1024 samples (i.e., 512/1024-point FFT). We found that at an optical signal-to-noise power ratio (OSNR) of 35 dB, the momentum-based gradient descent algorithm can successfully track state-of-polarization (SOP) rotation at frequencies of up to 50 kHz and with filter update delays of up to 14 blocks (39 ns). In comparison, using the conventional gradient descent algorithm in an otherwise identical receiver, the equalizer performance starts to deteriorate at SOP rotation frequencies above 20 kHz.

Development of a Handheld Line Information Reader and Generator for Efficient Management of Optical Communication Lines

A handheld line information reader and a line information generator were developed for the efficient management of optical communication lines. The line information reader consists of a photo diode, trans-impedance amplifier, voltage amplifier, microcontroller unit, display panel, and communication modules. The line information generator consists of a laser diode, laser driving circuits, microcontroller unit, and communication modules. The line information reader can detect the optical radiation field of the test line by bending the optical fiber. To enhance the sensitivity of the line information reader, an additional lens was used with a focal length of 4.51 mm. Moreover, the simulation results obtained through BeamPROP® software from Synopsys, Inc. demonstrated a stronger optical radiation field of the fiber due to a longer transmission wavelength and larger bending angle of the fiber. Therefore, the developed devices can be considered as useful tools for the efficient management of optical communication lines.

Unscented Kalman filters for polarization state tracking and phase noise mitigation

Simultaneous polarization and phase noise tracking and compensation is proposed based on an unscented Kalman filter (UKF). We experimentally demonstrate the tracking under noise-loading and after 800-km single-mode fiber transmission with 20-Gbaud QPSK and 16-QAM signals. These experiments show that the proposed UKF outperforms both conventional blind tracing algorithms and a previously proposed extended Kalman filter, at the cost of higher complexity. Additionally, we propose and test modified Kalman filter algorithms to reduce computational complexity.
