Chitosan-minerals-based composites for adsorption of caesium, cobalt and europium

Currently, there is a growing interest in the use of natural materials in various fields of science, technology and environmental protection due to their availability, low-cost, non-toxicity and biodegradability. Chitosan, natural clay of local origin, montmorillonite, zeolite, cross-linking agents (epichlorohydrin, sodium tripolyphosphate, glutaraldehyde) and plasticisers (glycerol) were used to synthesise composites. The composites were characterised by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), tested for their antibacterial activity and used in batch experiments to study the adsorption of caesium, cobalt and europium ions. The maximum capacities for adsorption of caesium, cobalt and europium on the composites were 1400 mg/g, 900 mg/g and 18 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data fit better the Langmuir isotherm model and indicate favourable monolayer adsorption of Cs+, Co2+ and Eu3+ at homogeneous sites of the composites. The experimental data were in better agreement with the pseudo-second-order non-linear kinetic model for most elements and adsorbents. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system proved to be a practical tool with good performance and generalisation capability for predicting the adsorption capacity of composites for caesium, cobalt, and europium ions. It was found that the predicted data were very close to the experimental data.

Radiation synthesis of chitosan/poly(acrylamide-co-maleic acid) hydrogel for the removal of 152+154Eu (III) ions

Using gamma radiation, a chitosan-poly (acrylamide-co-maleic acid) hydrogel was created by copolymerizing acrylamide and maleic acid onto the surface of chitosan. The shape, thermal stability, and structure of the hydrogel were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. The batch adsorption of ^152+154Eu(III) ions from an aqueous solution showed a rapid initial uptake with an equilibrium time of 24 h at pH (∼4). The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models were used to study the adsorption equilibrium data. The adsorption behavior of ^152+154Eu(III) ions closely followed the Langmuir isotherm, exhibiting a maximum adsorption capacity of 144.96 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics of ^152+154Eu(III) ions are best described by the pseudo-second order model. The thermodynamic parameters were studied and revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, exothermic, and favorable at a lower temperature. 0.1 M HCl and AlCl₃ desorbed ^152+154Eu(III) ions with 97.09% and 88.63%, respectively. Hence, the hydrogel will serve as a starting point for the adsorption of trivalent lanthanide ions in the future.

Automated Solid Phase Extraction of Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) Coupled with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry Utilizing a New Sol-Gel Functionalized Silica Sorbent

In this study a simple and sensitive on-line sorbent extraction platform coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry for trace metals determination was developed. The system utilized for the first time a novel sol-gel thiocyanatopropyl functionalized silica as adsorbent for metal’s separation and preconcentration. The main factors affecting the performance of the on-line system were investigated and optimized. The effect of potential interfering species that occur naturally in environmental and biological samples, as well as some toxic elements, was evaluated. Under optimum conditions the enhancement factors ranged between 73 and 152 for the target analytes. The LODs of the proposed methods were 0.15 μg L−1 for Cd(II), 0.5 μg L−1 for Co(II), 0.5 μg L−1 for Cu(II) and 1.9 μg L−1 for Pb(II) for 120 s preconcentration time. The relative standard deviation values for all elements were less than 3.8%, indicating good method precision. Moreover, the sol-gel thiocyanatopropyl functionalized silica-packed microcolumns exhibited limited flow resistance and excellent packing reproducibility. Finally, the proposed method was utilized for the analysis of environmental and biological samples.

A novel sorbent based on Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates: synthesis, characterization, and sorption properties

This work focuses on the synthesis procedure of a new sorbent based on a TiCaMg phosphate. The synthesis strategy includes stepwise interaction between solid precursors and phosphorus-containing agents. The solid precursors were ammonium titanyl sulfate and calcined dolomite, which were used as titanium, calcium, and magnesium sources. The effect of the nature and concentration of phosphoric agent on the sorbent composition and properties has been investigated using elemental analysis, TG, XRD, IR spectroscopy, BET, and SEM techniques. The novel sorbent has been demonstrated to be a composite material consisting of the following components: TiO(OH)H₂PO₄·H₂O, Ti(HPO₄)₂·H₂O, CaHPO₄·2H₂O, MgНPO₄·3H₂O, and NH₄MgPO₄·6H₂O. The ratio between these phases in the composite depends on synthesis conditions. The optimal conditions, ensuring full conversion of Ti, Ca, and Mg containing in the initial precursors into the final product, have been found. The sorption properties of the obtained composite sorbent towards Co²⁺, Cs⁺, and Sr²⁺ cations and their radionuclide analogues have been studied. The obtained data has indicated that the purification effect was based on both precipitation and ion exchange mechanism. The combined action of the individual components of the composite sorbent ensures its high sorption capacity towards different cations in a wide pH range. The new sorbent shows high sorption ability towards radionuclides in multicomponent liquid radioactive waste (LRW) systems, and the distribution coefficient of the studied radionuclides was found to be 10⁵ mL g^-1. The presence of different types of functional groups in the composite sorbent allows realizing the one-step purification process of LRW that, in turn, simplifies the sorption system design.
