Surface Stoichiometry Control of Colloidal Heterostructured Quantum Dots for High-Performance Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Generation

Manipulating the separation and transfer behaviors of charges has long been pursued for promoting the photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation based on II-VI quantum dot (QDs), but remains challenging due to the lack of effective strategies. Herein, a facile strategy is reported to regulate the recombination and transfer of interfacial charges through tuning the surface stoichiometry of heterostructured QDs. Using this method, it is demonstrated that the PEC cells based on CdSe-(Se_x S_{1- x} )₄ -(CdS)₂ core/shell QDs with a proper S_surface /Cd_surface ratio exhibits a remarkably improved photocurrent density (≈18.4 mA cm^-2 under one sun illumination), superior to the PEC cells based on QDs with Cd-rich or excessive S-rich surface. In-depth electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations reveal the critical role (hole traps) of surface S atoms in suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charges, and further attribute the inferior performance of excessive S-rich QDs to the impeded charge transfer from QDs to TiO₂ and electrolyte. This work puts forward a simple surface engineering strategy for improving the performance of QDs PEC cells, providing an efficient method to guide the surface design of QDs for their applications in other optoelectronic devices.

ZnO and cobalt decorated ZnO NPs: Synthesis, photocatalysis and antimicrobial applications

The rapid growth of pollutants, both biological and non-biological, puts environmental systems in jeopardy. In view of this, the current study demonstrates the synthesis of undoped and Cobalt-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Co doped ZnO NPs) via co-precipitation method. The confirmation of incorporation of the Co dopant into ZnO NPs was verified through various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. UV-absorption spectra of cobalt-doped ZnO NPs revealed a red shift with change of absorption spectra from 356 nm to 377 nm as compared to undoped ZnO NPs. XRD studies inferred that the average crystallite size of 0.5% and 1% Co-doped ZnO powder was obtained to be ∼16 nm and 14 nm respectively. A drop in band gap value from 3.48 eV to 3.30 eV provided as substantive evidence of the successful integration of Co²⁺ ions inside the ZnO matrix. FESEM and HRTEM studies revealed that the obtained ZnO NPs are in narrow size distribution (15-20 nm) with a wurtzite crystal structure. The synthesized ZnO and Co-ZnO NPs showed excellent photocatalytic and antimicrobial potency towards reactive brown dye (RB-1) and two bacterial strains, respectively. 1% Co-doped ZnO demonstrated the maximum photocatalytic activity (∼95%), in contrast to 0.5% Co-doped ZnO and undoped ZnO. Thus, the findings of this work support the developed system has a dual role as the photocatalyst, and antibacterial agent for efficient environmental remediation.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production and Tetracycline Degradation Using ZnIn2S4 Quantum Dots Modified g-C3N4 Composites

In this work, ZnIn₂S₄/g-C₃N₄ (ZIS/CN) composites were synthesized by in-situ growth method, which showed excellent photocatalytic activity in the degradation of tetracycline and hydrogen production from water under visible light irradiation. ZnIn₂S₄ quantum dots (ZIS QDs) tightly combined with sheet g-C₃N₄ (CN) to accelerate the separation and transportation of photogenerated charges for enhanced photocatalytic activity. Among the prepared nanocomposites, 20%ZnIn₂S₄ QDs/g-C₃N₄ (20%ZIS/CN) delivered the highest photocatalytic activity. After 120 min of irradiation, the degradation rate of tetracycline with 20%ZIS/CN was 54.82%, 3.1 times that of CN while the rate of hydrogen production was 75.2 μmol·g^-1·h^-1. According to the optical and electrochemical characterization analysis, it was concluded that the excellent photocatalytic activities of the composite materials were mainly due to the following three points: enhancement in light absorption capacity, acceleration in the charge transport, and reduction in the carrier recombination rate through the formation of S-scheme heterojunction in the composite system. The high photocatalytic activity of ZIS/CN composites provides a new idea to develop highly efficient photocatalysts.

A Review on MXene Synthesis, Stability, and Photocatalytic Applications

Photocatalytic water splitting, CO₂ reduction, and pollutant degradation have emerged as promising strategies to remedy the existing environmental and energy crises. However, grafting of expensive and less abundant noble-metal cocatalysts on photocatalyst materials is a mandatory practice to achieve enhanced photocatalytic performance owing to the ability of the cocatalysts to extract electrons efficiently from the photocatalyst and enable rapid/enhanced catalytic reaction. Hence, developing highly efficient, inexpensive, and noble-metal-free cocatalysts composed of earth-abundant elements is considered as a noteworthy step toward considering photocatalysis as a more economical strategy. Recently, MXenes (two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides) have shown huge potential as alternatives for noble-metal cocatalysts. MXenes have several excellent properties, including atomically thin 2D morphology, metallic electrical conductivity, hydrophilic surface, and high specific surface area. In addition, they exhibit Gibbs free energy of intermediate H atom adsorption as close to zero and less than that of a commercial Pt-based cocatalyst, a Fermi level position above the H₂ generation potential, and an excellent ability to capture and activate CO₂ molecules. Therefore, there is a growing interest in MXene-based photocatalyst materials for various photocatalytic events. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the synthesis of MXenes with 2D and 0D morphologies, the stability of MXenes, and MXene-based photocatalysts for H₂ evolution, CO₂ reduction, and pollutant degradation. The existing challenges and the possible future directions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of MXene-based photocatalysts are also discussed.
