Sn3B8O15: A Ternary Tin(II) Borate with Flexible [B8O18]12- Fundamental Building Block Formed by [B7O16]11- and [BO3]3- Groups

Owing to the tendency to form the glass state in growing crystals in the ternary tin(II) borate system, hitherto, very few single crystals in ternary tin(II) borate were reported. In this paper, a single crystal of Sn₃B₈O₁₅ was obtained via a high temperature solution method in a closed system. The structure features a flexible fundamental building block [B₈O₁₈]^12- constructed by one [BO₃]^3- unit and one [B₇O₁₆]^11- group that contains three hexatomic rings, which further connect to compose a two-dimensional ²_∞[B₈O₁₅] layer structure. The connection mode and flexibility of the three hexatomic B-O rings were analyzed, verifying the structural diversity of the B-O configuration. Moreover, the synthesis, crystal structure, and various characterizations were comprehensively presented. Also, theoretical calculations were employed to discuss structure-property relationships, and we use the real-space atom-cutting techniques to explain the origin of the birefringence of Sn₃B₈O₁₅.

Ba(B2OF3(OH)2)2 with well-ordered OH/F anions and a unique B2OF3(OH)2 dimer

A new centimetre-scale fluorooxoborate crystal Ba(B₂OF₃(OH)₂)₂, with well-ordered OH/F units and a new dimer containing BOF₃ units, has been fabricated.

Synthesis and Characterization of the First Tin Fluoride Borate Sn3 [B3 O7 ]F with Second Harmonic Generation Response

The new non-centrosymmetric tin fluoride borate Sn3 [B3 O7 ]F was synthesized hydrothermally, and was characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, DFT calculations, second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Its SHG response is about 12 times that of quartz. The compound crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pna21 with lattice parameters a=922.4(2), b=769.8(4), and c=1221.9(6) pm (Z=4). Characteristic for the structure are isolated B3 O7 moieties, consisting of two corner-sharing BO3 units and one BO4 tetrahedron. These occupy half of the octahedral voids of a slightly distorted hexagonal closest packing of Sn2+ atoms, with [SnF]+ units in the other half of the octahedral voids. Sn3 [B3 O7 ]F is transparent over a wide spectral range with a UV cut-off edge at about 263 nm.
