Antibacterial and antifungal two phenolic sesquiterpenes from Dysoxylum densiflorum

Sesquiterpenoids from Meliaceae Family and Their Biological Activities

Sesquiterpenoids, an important class of natural products possessing three isoprene-derived units, are widely distributed across plants and have a variety of biological activities. All sesquiterpenoids are derived from farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP), a biosynthesis precursor that can form various carbon skeletons. In order to provide a reference for further research and development of these compounds, this review focused on the increasing number of isolated and volatile sesquiterpenoids found to be produced by plants of the Meliaceae family between 1968 and 2023. The related articles were collected from SciFinder, Google Scholar, and PubMed. According to a literature review, several studies were started for more than 55 years on the plant's stem barks, twigs, leaves, flowers, seeds, and pericarps, where approximately 413 sesquiterpenoid compounds from several groups such as eudesmane, aromadendrane, cadinane, guaiane, bisabolane, furanoeremophilane, humulene, germacrane, and oppositane-type were isolated and identified with some minor products. Additionally, the hypothetical route of sesquiterpenoids biosynthesis from this family was identified, and eudesmane-type was reported to be 27% of the total compounds. The antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antiplasmodial, antiviral, and cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds and major volatile sesquiterpenoids constituent on essential oil were also evaluated. The result showed the fundamental of using the sesquiterpenoid compounds from the Meliaceae family in traditional medicine and the discovery of new drugs.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Sesquiterpenoids: Chemistry, Resource, and Activity

Infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi are threatening human health all over the world. It is an increasingly serious problem that the efficacies of some antibacterial and antifungal agents have been weakened by the drug resistance of some bacteria and fungi, which makes a great need for new antibiotics. Sesquiterpenoids, with abundant structural skeleton types and a wide range of bioactivities, are considered as good candidates to be antibacterial and antifungal agents. In the past decades, many sesquiterpenoids were isolated from plants and fungi that exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activities. In this review, the names, source, structures, antibacterial and antifungal degrees, and mechanisms of sesquiterpenoids with antibacterial and antifungal activity from 2012 to 2022 are summarized, and the structure-activity relationship of these sesquiterpenoids against bacteria and fungi is also discussed.

Structure elucidation of a new bicoumarin derivative from the leaves of Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm

A new bicoumarin derivative, bidysoxyletine (1), was isolated from the leaves of Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm. The structure of 1 was elucidated by analysis of NMR, UV, IR, HR-ESITOFMS, and DDFT approach using the B3LYP exchange-correlation function for ¹³ C NMR and UV spectroscopic data. The results indicated that the structure of 1 possessed a dibenzonapthyrone skeleton.

Anti-fungal Activity of Dalbergia retusa Extract on Gloeophyllum trabeum

Hongmu is a type of material with strong corrosion resistance, and its extract has wood preservative properties in a variety of environmental settings. Herein, the processing residue of Dalbergia retusa was used to obtain an ethanol-extract, whose anti-fungal properties and mechanism was investigated using multi-omics principles and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results show that D. retusa extract had a strong inhibitory effect on decaying fungus, and the inhibitory effect was dose dependent. High-throughput sequencing detected a total of 11,755 genes for transcriptome comparison. A total of 390 genes were differentially expressed, with 69 up-regulated and 321 down-regulated genes, indicating that D. retusa extract can significantly affect metabolic processes in decaying fungus. GC-MS results revealed that D. retusa extract was rich in phenols, ketones, amines, and aromatic compounds, which are likely to contribute to the excellent synergy between anti-fungal properties and anti-fungal activity (anti-fungal ability and active ingredients). In summary, this study describes the anti-fungal components in D. retusa extract, and our results provide a foundation for the study of their mechanism of action in this tree species.

Bidysoxyphenols A-C, dimeric sesquiterpene phenols from the leaves of Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm

Three new sesquiterpene phenol dimers, bidysoxyphenols A-C (2-4), along with two known compounds, namely sesquiterpene phenol (1) and ionone derivatives (5), were isolated from the leaves of Dysoxylum parasiticum (Osbeck) Kosterm. The structures of these new compounds, including their absolute configurations, were elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and electronic circular dichroism. Compounds 1 and 2 showed cytotoxicity against human promyelocytic leukemia cells, with IC₅₀ values of 18.25 ± 1.52 and 39.04 ± 3.12 μM, respectively.

Triterpenoids from Dysoxylum genus and their biological activities

This study aims to analyze the ethnobotanical, chemical, and biological activities of triterpenoid compounds isolated from the Dysoxylum genus of the Meliaceae family between 1974 and 2021. The species are mainly distributed in Africa, Asia, and Australia, and used as a traditional medicine to treat various diseases. Triterpenoid was first isolated in 1976 and as tetranortriterpenoid or limonoid, it was named dysobinin. Several studies were conducted for more than 40 years on the plants' stems, bark, and leaves, where approximately 279 triterpenoid compounds from several groups such as dammarane, nortriterpenoid, oleanane, lupane, tirucallane, cyclolanostane, or cycloartane, glabretal, and cycloapoeuphane-types were isolated with some synthetic products. In addition, the hypothetical route of triterpenes biosynthesis from this genus was identified, and tirucallane-type were reported to be 37.6% of the total compounds. The anti-malarial, anti-feedant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, vasodilative effect, anti-viral, cortisone reductase, and cytotoxic activities of the extract were also evaluated. The results showed the necessity of using the triterpenoid compounds from the Dysoxylum genus in traditional medicine and the discovery of new drugs.
