The Effect of Bonding Surface Design on Shear Bond Strength of 3D-Printed Orthodontic Attachments

Introduction

This study compared the shear bond strength (SBS) of four innovative designs of the bonding surface of 3D-printed orthodontic attachments with conventional mesh design.

Methods

In this in vitro study, the bonding surface design in different groups was as follows: Group 1, flat surface without any feature as a negative control; Group 2, concentric circles with no cuts; Group 3, concentric circles with 16 radial cuts; Group 4, concentric circles with 32 radial cuts; Group 5, small cones with a flat end and rounded edges; Group 6, mesh-based commercially available metal brackets of the maxillary central incisor (standard edgewise, Dentaurum®) as a positive control (n = 20). In Groups 1-5, attachments were designed with SolidWorks® Software and printed with a 2K DLP-LCD printer with hard tough resin (eSun®). All the samples were bonded to the restorative composite resin (Solafil®) surfaces with orthodontic composite resin (CuRAY-ECLIPSE®). The samples were examined for SBS with a universal testing machine after thermocycling (1,000 cycles of 5‒55°C). Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk, one-way ANOVA, and Bonferroni tests. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05.

Results

The mean SBS was significantly different between all the groups (P < 0.001) except for Groups 2 and 5 (P = 1.00) and Groups 2 and 6 (P = 1.00). Group 4 had the highest mean of SBS.

Conclusion

The bonding surface design significantly influenced the SBS of orthodontic attachments. The concentric circles with 32 cuts had higher bond strength than other designs and can be suggested as a new bonding surface design for orthodontic attachments.

Evaluation of the Shear Bond Strength of Chitosan Nanoparticles-Containing Orthodontic Primer: An In Vitro Study

Objectives

The present study was intended to investigate the effect of different concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles mixed with an orthodontic primer on the shear bond strength and bond failure of stainless steel brackets bonded to dental enamel.

Methods

Four concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles (0%, 1%, 5%, and 10%) were prepared and mixed with Transbond™ XT primer. Forty-eight extracted maxillary first premolars were bonded under a standardized procedure with stainless steel orthodontic brackets utilizing those different concentrations (12 teeth per each group). After the bonding procedure, the specimens were stored in deionized water (37°C for 24 hr) and then thermocycling 5,000 times before shear bond testing, which was performed using a universal testing device. Bond failure sites were examined under a stereomicroscope. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were also performed to verify and evaluate the phase of the nanopowder.

Results

The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance) and Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and the findings revealed statistically nonsignificant group differences regarding the shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (p > 0.05).

Conclusions

Primers containing varying concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles demonstrated acceptable shear bonding strength and adhesive remnant index.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles Incorporation on Shear Bond Strength and Antibacterial Activity of an Orthodontic Composite: An In Vitro Study

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticle (NP) incorporation on shear bond strength (SBS) and antibacterial property of orthodontic composites. A total of 100 mounted premolar teeth were randomly divided into five groups. In group 1 (control), the brackets were bonded to the teeth using the GC Ortho Connect orthodontic composite, while the brackets of groups 2 to 5 were bonded by the GC Ortho Connect orthodontic composite that contained 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4% weight percentages (w/w) of MgO NPs, respectively and then the SBS was measured. In the following, we evaluated the antibacterial properties of the MgO NP-containing composite on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) bacteria by the direct contact test method. According to results, there were no significant changes in the SBS as the MgO NP concentration was increased up to 1%, while the SBSs of the 2% and 4% MgO NPs were decreased when compared to the other three groups. The outcomes of the direct contact test indicated the case of 1% as being the minimum ratio of MgO NPs, which almost caused the entire annihilation of the S. mutans bacteria. In conclusion, the orthodontic composite containing 1% MgO NPs can display a significant antibacterial effect against S. mutans bacteria without inducing any negative effect on the SBS.

Impact of temperature changes to the adhesion strength of molar tubes: an in vitro study

BACKGROUND

The main purpose of this was to determine study adhesion strength of molar tubes bonding with a composite adhesive after exposure to a sudden change in temperature (thermal cycles).

METHODS

The study sample consisted of 40 recently extracted human first permanent molars, which were randomly divided into two groups of 20: group 1 was the experimental group (affected by thermal cycles), and group 2 was the control group. Molar tubes were bonded with a light-cure tube adhesive. The experimental group teeth were dipped 2,000 times in saline at 5 °C and at 55 °C. The control group were immersed in 37 °C saline. Molar tubes for both groups were removed with an adapted Mecmesim Multitesters 2.5-I, and the data were recorded with EMPEROR software. ANOVA was used to calculate and compare the results.

RESULTS

In the experimental group of the teeth, the maximum force was obtained at 94.2 N and the lowest force was 19.69 N. In the control group of the teeth, the maximum force was obtained at 159.1 N and the lowest force was 28.1 N. In the experimental group, the mean debonding force (59.12 N) was statically significantly smaller than in the control group (79.88 N), p = 0.0345. The forces in the control group were by 1.35 times greater than those in the experimental group.

CONCLUSIONS

The forces of the adhesion of molar tubes to the tooth surface were reduced after exposure to a sudden change in temperature (thermal cycles). The results were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group.
