Maximal Aerobic Frequency of Ball Hitting: A New Training Load Parameter in Tennis

IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS' TENNIS SKILLS BASED ON HITTING STRENGTH TRAINING

ABSTRACT Introduction: The traditional method of synchronous training between the waist and abdomen to improve the strengthening of tennis strokes has been the main form of teaching in Chinese universities, but this method has not yet achieved its most expressive results in these years of teaching. Objective: Analyze the differences between traditional strength training for tennis hitting, and provide techniques for its improvement. Methods: A comparative analysis of improved hitting strength training and traditional hitting strength training was conducted, the relevant indicators of students before and after the experiment were collected, and a data analysis program was used for comparison and methodological analysis. Results: The students’ speed and performance were significantly improved. The mean speed of the experimental group increased from 152.66 km/h to 168 km/h; the mean speed of the control group increased from 153.12 km/h to 159.23 km/h; the score of the experimental group relative to the others increased from 42.66 to 72.96. Conclusion: Both methods of strength training can improve the skills of students practicing tennis. The main difference was found in the speed of the improvement frequency. Therefore, we noticed corresponding differences between the groups and the students’ abilities during the experiment, evidencing expressive short-term results. Validity of Heart Rate-Based Models for Estimating Oxygen Uptake During Tennis Play

J Strength Cond Res 34(11): 3208-3216, 2020-This study aimed to assess the validity of an on-court tennis test (specific endurance tennis test [SET-Test]) and 2 heart rate (HR)-based methods for estimating oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2) in competitive tennis players. Thirty-five male players performed a SET-Test to relate test duration (minutes) and V[Combining Dot Above]O2. Two weeks later, 16 players performed a simulated match play set where HR and V[Combining Dot Above]O2 (V[Combining Dot Above]O2-PLAY, criterion value) were measured and then compared with V[Combining Dot Above]O2 values predicted from the HR/V[Combining Dot Above]O2 linear regression equations derived from the SET-Test (pV[Combining Dot Above]O2-TEST) and from the one set match play (pV[Combining Dot Above]O2-PLAY). Test duration and V[Combining Dot Above]O2-TEST were strongly correlated (r = 0.821, p < 0.001, SEE = 5.6 ml·kg·min), indicating that SET-Test outcome is a somewhat good indicator of aerobic fitness in tennis players, likely to be useful for training purposes. pV[Combining Dot Above]O2-PLAY and V[Combining Dot Above]O2-PLAY (criterion value) were strongly correlated (r = 0.832, p < 0.001) and SEE was moderate (3.5 ml·kg·min = 11.5%). pV[Combining Dot Above]O2-TEST differed from the criterion (32.4 ± 10.7 vs. 30.8 ± 8.6 ml·kg·min, p < 0.001) and, although strongly correlated (r = 0.689, p < 0.001), an overestimation occurred (mean Δ = 1.6 ml·kg·min = 4.9%), yielding a high SEE (4.8 ml·kg·min = 15.6%). We conclude that (a) SET-Test performance is a valid and moderately accurate predictor of V[Combining Dot Above]O2; and (b) the individual HR-V[Combining Dot Above]O2 regression equation generated during tennis match play predicts V[Combining Dot Above]O2 with greater accuracy than the regression derived from the SET-Test.

Effects of Repeated-Sprint Training in Hypoxia on Tennis-Specific Performance in Well-Trained Players

This study examined the physiological, physical and technical responses to repeated-sprint training in normobaric hypoxia [RSH, inspired fraction of oxygen (FiO ₂ ) 14.5%] vs. normoxia (RSN, FiO ₂ 20.9%). Within 12 days, eighteen well-trained tennis players (RSH, n=9 vs. RSN, n=9) completed five specific repeated-sprint sessions that consisted of four sets of 5 maximal shuttle-run sprints. Testing sessions included repeated-sprint ability and Test to Exhaustion Specific to Tennis (TEST). TEST’s maximal duration to exhaustion and time to attain the ‘onset of blood lactate accumulation’ at 4 mMol.L ⁻¹ (OBLA) improvements were significantly higher in RSH compared to RSN. Change in time to attain OBLA was concomitant with observations similar in time to the second ventilatory threshold. Significant interaction (P=0.003) was found for ball accuracy with greater increase in RSH (+13.8%, P=0.013) vs. RSN (–4.6%, P=0.15). A correlation (r=0.59, P<0.001) was observed between change in ball accuracy and TEST’s time to exhaustion. Greater improvement in some tennis-specific physical and technical parameters was observed after only 5 sessions of RSH vs. RSN in well-trained tennis players.

Differences within Elite Female Tennis Players during an Incremental Field Test

PURPOSE

To compare technical and physiological responses between junior and professional female players during an incremental field test to exhaustion specific to tennis.

METHODS

Twenty-seven female players (n = 14 and 13 for juniors and professionals, respectively) completed an incremental field test to exhaustion specific to tennis, which consisted of hitting alternatively forehand and backhand strokes at increasing ball frequency (ball machine) every minute. Ball accuracy and ball velocity were determined by radar and video analysis for each stroke, in addition to cardiorespiratory responses (portable gas analyzer).

RESULTS

The stage corresponding to the second ventilatory threshold (+20.0%, P = 0.027), time to exhaustion (+18.9%, P = 0.002) and maximum oxygen uptake (+12.4%, P = 0.007) were higher in professionals than in juniors. The relative percentage of maximal HR was lower at both the first (-4.7%, P = 0.014) and the second (-1.3%, P = 0.018) ventilatory thresholds in professionals. Backhand ball velocity was the only technical parameter that displayed larger (+7.1%, P = 0.016) values in professionals.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with juniors, female professional tennis players possess higher exercise capacity, maximal and submaximal aerobic attributes along with faster backhand stroke velocities during an incremental field test specific to tennis.
