An overview and historical look back at the solvent extraction using nitrogen donor ligands to extract and separate An(III) from Ln(III)

Theoretical insights into selective extraction of Am(III) from Cm(III) and Eu(III) with asymmetric N-heterocyclic ligands

Separation of lanthanide (Ln) and minor actinide (MA) elements and mutual separation between minor actinide elements (e.g. Am(III) and Cm(III)) represent a crucial undertaking. However, separating these elements poses a significant challenge owing to their highly similar physicochemical properties. Asymmetric N-heterocyclic ligands such as N-ethyl-6-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)picolinamide (Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy) and N-ethyl-N-(p-tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (ETPhenAm) have recently received considerable attention in the separation of MAs over Ln from acid solutions. By changing the central skeleton structures of these ligands and introducing substituents with different properties on the side chains, their complexation behavior with Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III) may be affected. In this work, we explore four different asymmetric N-containing heterocyclic ligands, namely Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy (L1), N-ethyl-6'-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)-[2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamide (L2), N-ethyl-9-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (L3), and ETPhenAm (L4) using density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results demonstrate the potential of ligands L1-L4 for the extraction and separation of Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III). Ligand analysis shows that ligand L3 binds more easily to the central metal atom, in line with the stronger extraction capacity of L3. In spite of the higher covalence between the side chain and the central metal atom for complexes with L1-L3, the main chain seems to control the stability of the extraction complexes. The preorganized 1,10-phenanthroline backbone also further enhances the extraction performance of L3 and L4. The difference in coordination ability between the side chain donors of these ligands and metal ions may affect their separation efficiency. This work presents theoretical insights into synthesizing novel ligands for separating trivalent actinides by adjusting N-heterocyclic ligands.

Shape-Selective Supramolecular Capsules for Actinide Precipitation and Separation

Improving actinide separations is key to reducing barriers to medical and industrial actinide isotope production and to addressing the challenges associated with the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Here, we report the first example of a supramolecular anion recognition process that can achieve this goal. We have designed a preorganized triamidoarene receptor that induces quantitative precipitation of the early actinides Th(IV), Np(IV), and Pu(IV) from industrially relevant conditions through the formation of self-assembled hydrogen-bonded capsules. Selectivity over the later An(III) elements is shown through modulation of the nitric acid concentration, and no precipitation of actinyl or transition-metal ions occurs. The Np, Pu, and Am precipitates were characterized structurally by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and reveal shape specificity of the internal hydrogen-bonding array for the encapsulated hexanitratometalates. This work complements ion-exchange resins for 5f-element separations and illustrates the significant potential of supramolecular separation methods that target anionic actinide species.

Theoretical investigations into the bonding and separation properties of non-rigid, partially rigid, and rigid ligands derived from Et-Tol-PTA with trivalent lanthanides and actinides

The separation of trivalent actinide elements from lanthanide elements represents one of the most formidable challenges within the context of nuclear waste partitioning and transmutation (P&T) processes. Consequently, we embarked on a systematic investigation aimed at elucidating the bonding properties and thermodynamic behavior of a N-ethyl-N-tolyl-2-amide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-PTA) ligand in conjunction with trivalent actinide and lanthanide elements. This investigation involved the utilization of various density functional theory (DFT) methods and a comparative analysis between small-core pseudopotential basis sets and all-electron basis sets. It was found that well-performing results were achieved using the PBE0 functional in both bond length and thermodynamic energy calculations, with minimal impact being exerted by the basis set on the results. Furthermore, an exploration was carried out into the bonding and thermodynamic properties of trivalent actinides and lanthanides with ligands derived from Et-Tol-PTA, encompassing non-rigid (La), partially rigid (Lb, Lc), and rigid (Ld) ligands. Thermodynamically, advantages in the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) were exhibited by Lb and Lc ligands, while excellent performance in the separation of Am(III)/Cm(III) was demonstrated by the La ligand. Analyses conducted using quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), reduced density gradient (RDG), and natural bond orbital (NBO) methodologies revealed the presence of partial covalent character in the bonds between oxygen (O) and metal (M), as well as between nitrogen (N) and metal (M), with a higher degree of covalent character being observed in O-Am and N-Am bonds compared to O-Cm/Eu and N-Cm/Eu interactions.

3–(2–Pyridyl)pyrazole Based Luminescent 1D-Coordination Polymers and Polymorphic Complexes of Various Lanthanide Chlorides Including Orange-Emitting Cerium(III)

A series of 18 lanthanide-containing 1D-coordination polymers 1∞[Ln2(2–PyPzH)4Cl6], Ln = La, Nd, Sm, dinuclear polymorphic complexes α–, β–[Ln2(2–PyPzH)4Cl6], Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, α–[Tb2(2–PyPzH)4Cl6], and [Gd2(2–PyPzH)3(2–PyPz)Cl5], mononuclear complexes [Ce(2–PyPzH)3Cl3], [Ln(2–PyPzH)2Cl3], Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, and salt-like complexes [Gd3(2–PyPzH)8Cl8]Cl and [PyH][Tb(2–PyPzH)2Cl4] were obtained from the reaction of the respective lanthanide chloride with the 3–(2–pyridyl)pyrazole (2–PyPzH) ligand at different temperatures. An antenna effect through ligand-to-metal energy transfer was observed for several products, leading to the highest luminescence efficiency displayed by a quantum yield of 92% in [Tb(2–PyPzH)2Cl3]. The Ce3+ ion in the complex [Ce(2–PyPzH)3Cl3] exhibits a bright and orange 5d-based broadband emission with a maximum at around 600 nm, marking an example of a strong reduction of the 5d-excited states of Ce(III). The absorption spectroscopy shows ion-specific 4f–4f transitions, which can be assigned to Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ in a wide spectral range from UV–VIS to the NIR region.

Advancing the Am Extractant Design through the Interplay among Planarity, Preorganization, and Substitution Effects

Advancing the field of chemical separations is important for nearly every area of science and technology. Some of the most challenging separations are associated with the americium ion Am(III) for its extraction in the nuclear fuel cycle, ²⁴¹Am production for industrial usage, and environmental cleanup efforts. Herein, we study a series of extractants, using first-principle calculations, to identify the electronic properties that preferentially influence Am(III) binding in separations. As the most used extractant family and because it affords a high degree of functionalization, the polypyridyl family of extractants is chosen to study the effects of the planarity of the structure, preorganization of coordinating atoms, and substitution of various functional groups. The actinyl ions are used as a structurally simplified surrogate model to quickly screen the most promising candidates that can separate these metal ions. The down-selected extractants are then tested for the Am(III)/Eu(III) system. Our results show that π interactions, especially those between the central terpyridine ring and Am(III), play a crucial role in separation. Adding an electron-donating group onto the terpyridine backbone increases the binding energies to Am(III) and stabilizes Am-terpyridine coordination. Increasing the planarity of the extractant increases the binding strength as well, although this effect is found to be rather weak. Preorganizing the coordinating atoms of an extractant to their binding configuration as in the bound metal complex speeds up the binding process and significantly improves the kinetics of the separation process. This conclusion is validated by the synthesized 1,2-dihydrodipyrido[4,3-b;5,6-b]acridine (13) extractant, a preorganized derivative of the terpyridine extractant, which we experimentally showed was four times more effective than terpyridine at separating Am³⁺ from Eu³⁺ (SF_Am/Eu ∼ 23 ± 1).

Promising Lipophilic PyTri Extractant for Selective Trivalent Actinide Separation from High Active Raffinate

Within a spent nuclear fuel recycling strategy, in the past few years, the pyridine-bis-triazole unit was found to be rather effective and selective in minor actinide (MA) separation from synthetic high active raffinate (HAR). In this research work, the main features of the recently studied PTEH ligand were investigated in order to evaluate its potentialities in SANEX-like processes. Its applicability in advanced separation processes was demonstrated, even at process temperatures. It manifested satisfactory extraction properties for a successful selective An separation from Ln, easy cation release, and adequate extraction kinetics as well as outstanding hydrolytical and radiolytical stability. All the results collected in this work allowed the scientists on the committee of the H2020 GENIORS project to promote PTEH as a concrete alternative to the reference CyMe₄-BTBP ligand.

Complexation Behaviors of a Tridentate Phenanthroline Carboxamide Ligand with Trivalent f-Block Elements in Different Anion Systems: A Thermodynamic and Crystallographic Perspective

The counteranion has a strong influence on the complexation behavior of tridentate phenanthroline carboxamide ligands with actinides and lanthanides, but the thermodynamic and underlying interaction mechanism at the molecular level is still not clear. In this work, a tridentate ligand, N-ethyl-N-tolyl-2-amide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-PTA), was synthesized, and the effects of different anions (Cl^-, NO₃^-, and ClO₄^-) on the complexation behavior of Et-Tol-PTA with typical lanthanides were thoroughly studied by using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The NMR spectroscopic titration of Lu(III) showed that there were three species (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 ligand-metal complexes) formed in Cl^- solution systems while two species (2:1 and 1:1) were formed in NO₃^- and ClO₄^- solution systems. When Et-Tol-PTA was titrated with La(III), two species (2:1 and 1:1) were formed in NO₃^- systems and only one species (1:1) was formed in Cl^- and ClO₄^- systems. In addition, the stability constant was determined via UV-vis spectroscopic titration, which showed that the complexation strength between Et-Tol-PTA and Eu(III) decreased in the following order: ClO₄^- > NO₃^- > Cl^-. This indicated that Et-Tol-PTA had the strongest complexation ability with Eu(III) in the ClO₄^- system. The structures of Et-Tol-PTA complexed with EuCl₃, Eu(NO₃)₃, and Eu(ClO₄)₃ were further elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and agreed well with the results of UV-vis titration experiments. The results of this work revealed that the mechanisms of complexation of lanthanides with the asymmetric ligand Et-Tol-PTA were strongly affected by different anionic environments in solution and in the solid state. These findings may lead to the improvement of the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides in nuclear waste.

Opportunities and challenges of applying advanced X-ray spectroscopy to actinide and lanthanide N-donor ligand systems

N-donor ligands such as n-Pr-BTP [2,6-bis(5,6-dipropyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine] preferentially bind trivalent actinides (An3+) over trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) in liquid-liquid separation. However, the chemical and physical processes responsible for this selectivity are not yet well understood. Here, an explorative comparative X-ray spectroscopy and computational (L3-edge) study for the An/Ln L3-edge and the N K-edge of [An/Ln(n-Pr-BTP)3](NO3)3, [Ln(n-Pr-BTP)3](CF3SO3)3 and [Ln(n-Pr-BTP)3](ClO4)3 complexes is presented. High-resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) L3-edge data reveal additional features in the pre- and post-edge range of the spectra that are investigated using the quantum chemical codes FEFF and FDMNES. X-ray Raman spectroscopy studies demonstrate the applicability of this novel technique for investigations of liquid samples of partitioning systems at the N K-edge.

Comparative Investigation into the Complexation and Extraction Properties of Tridentate and Tetradentate Phosphine Oxide-Functionalized 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands toward Lanthanides and Actinides

Two new phosphine oxide-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, tetradentate 2,9-bis(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-BPPhen, L¹ ) and tridentate 2-(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-MPPhen, L² ), were synthesized and studied comparatively for their coordination with trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The complexation mechanisms of these two ligands toward trivalent f-block elements were thoroughly elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, UV/vis spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, and theoretical calculation methods. NMR titration results demonstrated that 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (metal to ligand) lanthanides complexes formed for L¹ , whereas 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 lanthanide complexes formed for L² in methanol. The formation of these species was validated by fluorescence spectrometry, and the corresponding stability constants for the complexes of Nd^III with L¹ and L² were determined by using UV/vis spectrophotometry. Structures of the 10-coordinated 1 : 1-type complexes of EuL¹ (NO₃ )₃ and [EuL² (NO₃ )₃ (H₂ O)] Et₂ O in the solid state were characterized by X-ray crystallography. In solvent-extraction experiments, L¹ exhibited extremely strong extraction ability for both Am^III and Eu^III , whereas L² showed nearly no extraction toward Am^III or Eu^III due to its high hydrophilicity. Finally, the structures and bonding natures of the complex species formed between Am^III /Eu^III and L¹ /L² were analyzed in DFT calculations.

Strong Periodic Tendency of Trivalent Lanthanides Coordinated with a Phenanthroline-Based Ligand: Cascade Countercurrent Extraction, Spectroscopy, and Crystallography

Phenanthroline-diamide ligands have been reported in the selective separation of actinides over Eu(III); on the contrary, relevant basic coordination chemistry studies are still limited, and extraction under actual application conditions is rarely involved. In this work, N,N'-diethyl-N,N'-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline [Et-Tol-DAPhen (L)] was applied to explore the coordination performance of lanthanides in simulative high-level liquid waste. For the first time, cascade countercurrent extraction was conducted with Et-Tol-DAPhen as the extractant, which reveals the periodic tendency of the extraction efficiency of lanthanides to decrease gradually as the atomic number increases. Comparison of elements with similar radii verifies the hypothesis that the increase in the atomic number leads to a decrease in the ionic radius, thus reducing the coordination and extraction capacity of ligands. Slope analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet-visible titration results show that the ligand forms 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with lanthanides and the coordination ability follows the tendency of extraction efficiency, and the first crystal structures of Lns(III) with a phenanthroline-diamide ligand, i.e., [LaL(NO₃)₃(H₂O)] and [LaL₂(NO₃)₂][(NO₃)], were obtained, which confirms the conclusions described above. This work promises to enhance our comprehension of the chemical properties of Lns(III) and offer new clues for the design and synthesis of novel separation ligands.

Influence of a N-Heterocyclic Core on the Binding Capability of N,O-Hybrid Diamide Ligands toward Trivalent Lanthanides and Actinides

N,O-hybrid diamide ligands with N-heterocyclic skeletons are one of the promising extractants for the selective separation of actinides over lanthanides in a highly acidic HNO₃ solution. In this work, three hard-soft donor mixed diamide ligands, pyridine-2,6-diylbis(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethanone) (Pyr-PyDA), 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-diylbis(pyr-rolidine-1-ylmethanone) (Pyr-BPyDA), and (1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethanone) (Pyr-DAPhen), were synthesized and used to probe the influence of N-heterocyclic cores on the complexation and extraction behaviors with trivalent lanthanides and actinides. ¹H NMR titration experiments demonstrated that 1:1 metal-to-ligand complexes were mainly formed between the three ligands and lanthanides, but 1:2 type complexes were also formed between tridentate Pyr-PyDA and Lu(III). The stability constants (log β) of these three ligands with two typical lanthanides, Nd(III) and Eu(III), were determined through spectrophotometric titration. It is found that Pyr-DAPhen formed the most stable complexes, while Pyr-PyDA formed the most unstable complexes with lanthanides, which coincided well with the following solvent extraction results. The solid-state structures of 1:1 type complexes of these three ligands with La(III), Nd(III), and Er(III) in nitrate media were identified by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Nd(III) and Er(III) were 10-coordinated with Pyr-PyDA, Pyr-BPyDA, and Pyr-DAPhen via one ligand molecule and three nitrate ions. La(III), because of its larger ionic radius, was 11-coordinated with Pyr-DAPhen through one ligand molecule, three nitrate ions, and one methanol molecule. Solvent extraction experiments showed that the preorganized phenanthroline-derived Pyr-DAPhen had the best extraction performance for trivalent actinide among the three ligands tested. This work provides some experimental insights into the design of more efficient ligands for trivalent actinide separation by adjusting the N-heterocyclic cores.

Electronic Structure of Ytterbium(III) Solvates-a Combined Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

The wide range of optical and magnetic properties of lanthanide(III) ions is associated with their intricate electronic structures which, in contrast to lighter elements, is characterized by strong relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling. Nevertheless, computational methods are now capable of describing the ladder of electronic energy levels of the simpler trivalent lanthanide ions, as well as the lowest energy term of most of the series. The electronic energy levels result from electron configurations that are first split by spin-orbit coupling into groups of energy levels denoted by the corresponding Russell-Saunders terms. Each of these groups are then split by the ligand field into the actual electronic energy levels known as microstates or sometimes m_J levels. The ligand-field splitting directly informs on the coordination geometry and is a valuable tool for determining the structure and thus correlating the structure and properties of metal complexes in solution. The issue with lanthanide complexes is that the determination of complex structures from ligand-field splitting remains a very challenging task. In this paper, the optical spectra-absorption, luminescence excitation, and luminescence emission-of ytterbium(III) solvates were recorded in water, methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The electronic energy levels, that is, the microstates, were resolved experimentally. Subsequently, density functional theory calculations were used to model the structures of the solvates, and ab initio relativistic complete active space self-consistent field calculations (CASSCF) were employed to obtain the microstates of the possible structures of each solvate. By comparing the experimental and theoretical data, it was possible to determine both the coordination number and solution structure of each solvate. In water, methanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide, the solvates were found to be eight-coordinated and have a square antiprismatic coordination geometry. In DMSO, the speciation was found to be more complicated. The robust methodology developed for comparing experimental spectra and computational results allows the solution structures of homoleptic lanthanide complexes to be determined.

Unfolding the Extraction and Complexation Behaviors of Trivalent f-Block Elements by a Tetradentate N,O-Hybrid Phenanthroline Derived Phosphine Oxide Ligand

In this work, a tetradentate N,O-hybrid 2,9-bis(diphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (Ph₂-BPPhen) ligand was studied for the coextraction of trivalent f-block elements from nitric acid media. The extraction as well as the complexation behaviors of Ph₂-BPPhen with f-block elements were thoroughly investigated using ³¹P and ¹H NMR spectrometry, UV-vis spectrophotometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculation. Ph₂-BPPhen exhibits remarkably extraction ability for both Am(III) and Eu(III) and more than 99.5% of Am(III) and Eu(III) were extracted from 1.0 M HNO₃ solution. Slope analysis suggests that both 2:1 and 1:1 ligand/metal complexes were probably formed during the extraction. The 1:1 and 2:1 Ln(III) complexes with Ph₂-BPPhen were also identified in CH₃OH solution by NMR spectrometry, and the stability constants were determined via UV-vis spectrophotometry. Structures of the 1:1 Eu(Ph₂-BPPhen)(NO₃)₃ and Am(Ph₂-BPPhen)(NO₃)₃ complexes were further elucidated by single X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations. The higher extractability of Ph₂-BPPhen toward trivalent Am(III) and Eu(III) compared with the previously reported phenanthroline-derived amide and phosphonate ligands was attributed to the stronger affinity of the -P═O(R)₂ group to metal ions. The results from this work indicate that the N,O-hybrid 1,10-phenanthroline derived phosphine oxide ligand can serve as a new and promising candidate for coextraction of trivalent f-block elements in the treatment of nuclear waste.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: Promising Co-solvents to Improve the Extraction Kinetics of CyMe4-BTBP

In this communication, we report on the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for processing nuclear waste, with a view to selectively recovering minor actinides (MA) from highly active raffinate solutions. DESs are an interesting new class of green and eco-sustainable solvents. Herein, a representative family of DES was tested as a co-solvent for MA/lanthanides partitioning based on Selective ActiNide EXtraction (SANEX)-like hydrometallurgical processes. The reference system exploits the CyMe₄-BTBP lipophilic extractant for selective MA recovery, but the slow kinetics is the main limitation toward the industrial implementation. A selection of hydrophilic DESs has been proposed as a phase transfer catalyst and tested to improve the process performances. In this work, the radiochemical stability and the extraction behavior of these DESs have been ascertained. Moreover, a preliminary optimization of system composition has been achieved. This study underlines a catalytic effect of DES that can be proficiently exploited to enhance CyMe₄-BTBP extraction and selectivity.

Impact of Solvent Polarity on the Ligand Configuration in Tetravalent Thorium N-Donor Complexes

A combined NMR spectroscopic and theoretical study on the complexation of diamagnetic Th(IV) with 2,6-bis(5,6-dipropyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine (nPr-BTP) was performed. Different ligand configurations were observed for [Th(nPr-BTP)₃]⁴⁺ complexes depending on the solvent's ability to actively form hydrogen bonds. In polar aprotic solvents, a complex is observed, which is isostructural with [M(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ (M = Am, Ln) complexes studied earlier. In contrast, ¹H, ¹³C, and ¹⁵N NMR spectra recorded in polar protic solvents showed twice as many signals, indicating a breakdown of symmetry. Supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this difference is explained by the solvent effect on the steric arrangement of the propyl moieties located on the triazine rings. Important information on bonding properties was obtained by ¹⁵N NMR. In contrast to the respective Am(III) complex showing a significant covalent contribution, the Th(IV)-BTP interaction is mainly electrostatic.

Trivalent Actinide Ions Showing Tenfold Coordination in Solution

Trivalent actinides generally exhibit ninefold coordination in solution. 2,6-Bis(5,6-dipropyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine (nPr-BTP), a tridentate nitrogen donor ligand, is known to form ninefold coordinated 1:3 complexes, [An(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ (An = U, Pu, Am, Cm) in solution. We report a Cm(III) complex with tenfold coordination in solution, [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)]²⁺. This species was identified using time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS), vibronic side band spectroscopy (VSBS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT). Adding nitrate to a solution of the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ complex in 2-propanol shifts the Cm(III) emission band from 613.1 to 617.3 nm. This bathochromic shift is due to a higher coordination number of the Cm(III) ion in solution, in agreement with the formation of the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)]²⁺ complex. The formation of this complex exhibits slow kinetics in the range of 5 to 12 days, depending on the water content of the solvent. Formation of a complex [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(X)]²⁺ was not observed for anions other than nitrate (X^- = NO₂^-, CN^-, or OTf^-). The formation of the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)]²⁺ complex was studied as a function of NO₃^- and nPr-BTP concentrations, and slope analyses confirmed the addition of one nitrate anion to the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ complex. Experiments with varied nPr-BTP concentration show that [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)]²⁺ only forms at nPr-BTP concentrations below 10^-4 mol/L whereas for concentrations greater than 10^-4 mol/L the formation of the tenfold species is suppressed and [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ is the only species present. The presence of the tenfold coordinated complex is supported by VSBS, XPS, and DFT calculations. The vibronic side band of the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)]²⁺ complex exhibits a nitrate stretching mode not observed in the [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ complex. Moreover, XPS on [M(nPr-BTP)₃(NO₃)](NO₃)₂ (M = Eu, Am) yields signals from both non-coordinated and coordinated nitrate. Finally, DFT calculations reveal that the energetically most favored structure is obtained if the nitrate is positioned on the C₂ axis of the D₃ symmetrical [Cm(nPr-BTP)₃]³⁺ complex with a bond distance of 413 pm. Combining results from TRLFS, VSBS, XPS, and DFT provides sound evidence for a unique tenfold coordinated Cm(III) complex in solution-a novelty in An(III) solution chemistry.

Gas-Phase Complexes of Americium and Lanthanides with a Bis-triazinyl Pyridine: Reactivity and Bonding of Archetypes for F-Element Separations

Bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs) exhibit solution selectivity for trivalent americium over lanthanides (Ln), the origins of which remain uncertain. Here, electrospray ionization was used to generate gas-phase complexes [ML₃]³⁺, where M = La, Lu, or Am and L is EtBTP 2,6-bis(5,6-diethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridine. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) of [ML₃]³⁺ in the presence of H₂O yielded a protonated ligand [L(H)]⁺ and hydroxide [ML₂(OH)]²⁺ or hydrate [ML(L-H)(H₂O)]²⁺, where (L-H)^- is a deprotonated ligand. Although solution affinities indicate stronger binding of BTPs toward Am³⁺ versus Ln³⁺, the observed CID process is contrastingly more facile for M = Am versus Ln. To understand the disparity, density functional theory was employed to compute potential energy surfaces for two possible CID processes, for M = La and Am. In accordance with the CID results, both the rate determining transition state barrier and the net energy are lower for [AmL₃]³⁺ versus [LaL₃]³⁺ and for both product isomers, [ML₂(OH)]²⁺ and [ML(L-H)(H₂O)]²⁺. More facile removal of a ligand from [AmL₃]³⁺ by CID does not necessarily contradict stronger Am³⁺-L binding, as inferred from solution behavior. In particular, the formation of new bonds in the products can distort kinetics and thermodynamics expected for simple bond cleavage reactions. In addition to correctly predicting the seemingly anomalous CID behavior, the computational results indicate greater participation of Am 5f versus La 4f orbitals in metal-ligand bonding.

Optimization of Baicalin, Wogonoside, and Chlorogenic Acid Water Extraction Process from the Roots of Scutellariae Radix and Lonicerae japonicae Flos Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)

In this study, a simultaneous water extraction process for baicalin, wogonoside, and chlorogenic acid has been optimized. The effect of extraction temperature, extraction time, and liquid–solid ratio was scrutinized by single factor experiments and further analyzed by Box–Behnken design (BBD) approach using response surface methodology (RSM). The extraction yield of investigated compounds was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Single-factor experiments and response surface analysis results revealed that the optimized conditions are: Liquid to solid ratio 25:1 (mL/g), extraction temperature 93 °C, extraction time 2.4 h, and the extraction cycle two. Importantly, it has been noted that under the above conditions, concentrations of baicalin, wogonoside, and chlorogenic were 0.078, 0.031, and 0.013 mg/mL, respectively, and the overall desirability (OD) value was 0.76 which was higher than the non-optimized conditions and the deviation from the predicted OD value was only 2.44%. Conclusively, it has been suggested that the model was stable and feasible, and fit for extraction of baicalin, wogonoside, and chlorogenic acid from Scutellariae Radix and Lonicerae (L.) japonicae Flos.

Exploring the Subtle Effect of Aliphatic Ring Size on Minor Actinide-Extraction Properties and Metal Ion Speciation in Bis-1,2,4-Triazine Ligands

The synthesis and evaluation of three novel bis-1,2,4-triazine ligands containing five-membered aliphatic rings are reported. Compared to the more hydrophobic ligands 1-3 containing six-membered aliphatic rings, the distribution ratios for relevant f-block metal ions were approximately one order of magnitude lower in each case. Ligand 10 showed an efficient, selective and rapid separation of Am^III and Cm^III from nitric acid. The speciation of the ligands with trivalent f-block metal ions was probed using NMR titrations and competition experiments, time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. While the tetradentate ligands 8 and 10 formed Ln^III complexes of the same stoichiometry as their more hydrophobic analogues 2 and 3, significant differences in speciation were observed between the two classes of ligand, with a lower percentage of the extracted 1:2 complexes being formed for ligands 8 and 10. The structures of the solid state 1:1 and 1:2 complexes formed by 8 and 10 with Y^III , Lu^III and Pr^III are very similar to those formed by 2 and 3 with Ln^III . Ligand 10 forms Cm^III and Eu^III 1:2 complexes that are thermodynamically less stable than those formed by ligand 3, suggesting that less hydrophobic ligands form less stable An^III complexes. Thus, it has been shown for the first time how tuning the cyclic aliphatic part of these ligands leads to subtle changes in their metal ion speciation, complex stability and metal extraction affinity.

Separation of actinides from lanthanides associated with spent nuclear fuel reprocessing in China: current status and future perspectives

Developing necessary reprocessing techniques to meet the remarkable increase of spent nuclear fuels (SNFs) is crucial for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. This review summarizes recent research progresses related to the SNF reprocessing in China, with an emphasis on actinides separation over lanthanides through three different techniques, hydrometallurgical reprocessing, pyrometallurgical processes, and selective crystallization based separation. Some future perspectives with respect to advanced actinide separation are also given.

Time-resolved and steady-state irradiation of hydrophilic sulfonated bis-triazinyl-(bi)pyridines - modelling radiolytic degradation

Efficient separation of the actinides from the lanthanides is a critical challenge in the development of a more sophisticated spent nuclear fuel recycling process. Based upon the slight differences in f-orbital distribution, a new class of soft nitrogen-donor ligands, the sulfonated bis-triazinyl-(bi)pyridines, has been identified and shown to be successful for this separation under anticipated, large-scale treatment conditions. The radiation robustness of these ligands is key to their implementation; however, current stability studies have yielded conflicting results. Here we report on the radiolytic degradation of the sulfonated 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine (BTP(S)) and 6,6'-bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (BTBP(S)) in aerated, aqueous solutions using a combination of time-resolved pulsed electron techniques to ascertain their reaction kinetics with key aqueous radiolysis products (eaq-, H˙, ˙OH, and ˙NO3), and steady state gamma radiolysis in conjunction with liquid chromatography for identification and quantification of both ligands as a function of absorbed dose. These data were used to construct a predictive deterministic model to provide critical insight into the fundamental radiolysis mechanisms responsible for the ligands' radiolytic stability. The first-order decays of BTP(S) and BTBP(S) are predominantly driven by oxidative processes (˙OH and, to a lesser extent, H2O2), for which calculations demonstrate that the rate of degradation is inhibited by the formation of ligand degradation products that undergo secondary reactions with the primary products of water radiolysis. Overall, BTP(S) is ∼20% more radiolytically stable than BTBP(S), but over 90% of either ligand is consumed within 1 kGy.

Separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides using various ‘N’, ‘S’ and mixed ‘N,O’ donor ligands: a review

Separation of trivalent actinide (An) and lanthanide (Ln) elements is one of the burning topics in the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle due to the similarity in their chemical behaviour. A significant amount of research is being carried out worldwide to develop suitable ligands for the separation of the trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Some of the research groups are engaged in continuous improvement of the di-ethylene-triamine-penta acetic acid (DTPA) based Ln/An separation method, whereas extensive research is going on for the development of the lipophilic and hydrophilic ‘N’ donor heteropolycyclic ligands as the actinide selective ligand. A number of ‘S’ donor ligands are also explored for the Ln/An separation. In the present review, we made an attempt to highlight various separation processes based on soft donor ligands developed for Ln/An separations. Beside the conventional solvent extraction processes, separation possibilities membrane based and solid phase extraction techniques are evaluated for the Ln/An separation and are compiled in the present review.

Role of Ligand Straining in Complexation of Eu3+-Am3+ Ions by TPEN and PPDEN, Scalar Relativistic DFT Exploration in Conjunction with COSMO-RS

To search for new ligands suitable for the separation of minor actinides (MA) from lanthanides (Ln) in nuclear waste reprocessing, theoretical (density functional theory) studies were carried out on the complexation (structures, bonding, and thermodynamics) of La³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, and Am³⁺ complexes with moderately soft donor ligands TPEN [N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine] and PPDEN [N,N,N',N″,N″-pentakis(2-pyridylmethyl) diethylenetriamine] in aqueous and nitrobenzene solutions. B3LYP level of theory was used in conjunction with the conductor-like screening model for real systems (COSMO-RS). The metal ions in [M(NO₃)₂(TPEN)]NO₃ and [M(NO₃)(PPDEN)](NO₃)₂ complexes were deca-coordinated with both TPEN and PPDEN. The enthalpy of the complexation with TPEN in an aqueous solution was found to be negative, indicating the exothermic nature of the reaction as observed in the experiments. The calculated values of free energy of complexation follow the experimental trend: Am³⁺ > Sm³⁺ > La³⁺. Furthermore, the calculated free energy with PPDEN is reduced compared to that with TPEN, which may be attributed to the ligand straining during complex formation, which is also reflected in greater residual charges on both the Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ central ions in the complexes of octadentate PPDEN compared to hexadentate TPEN. The experimental complexation selectivity of Am³⁺ over Eu³⁺ with TPEN is established by employing COSMO-RS. Furthermore, TPEN is Am³⁺-selective, whereas PPDEN is Eu³⁺-selective, which could be exploited for the efficient separation of MA from Ln.
