Amine-templated uranyl selenates with chiral [(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)]2– layers: topology, isomerism, structural relationships

Organically Templated Uranyl Sulfates and Selenates: Structural Complexity and Crystal Chemical Restrictions for Isotypic Compounds Formation

This paper reviews the state of the art in the structural chemistry of organically templated uranyl sulfates and selenates, which are considered as the most representative groups of U-bearing synthetic compounds. In total, there are 194 compounds known for both groups, the crystal structures of which include 84 various organic molecules. Structural studies and topological analysis clearly indicate complex crystal chemical limitations in terms of the isomorphic substitution implementation, since the existence of isotypic phases has to date been confirmed only for 24 compounds out of 194, which is slightly above 12%. The structural architecture of the entire compound depends on the combination of the organic and oxyanion parts, changes in which are sometimes realized even while maintaining the topology of the U-bearing complex. An increase in the size of the hydrocarbon part and number of charge functional groups of the organic cation leads to the formation of rare and more complex topologies. In addition, the crystal structures of two novel uranyl sulfates and one uranyl selenate, templated by isopropylammonium cations, are reported.

Mixed-Valence NpV/AnVI Molybdate Complexes with Single-Charge Outer-Sphere Cations

Five new mixed-valence NpV/AnVI molybdates of the composition [C(NH2)3]3[(NpVO2)(NpVIO2)(MoO4)3(H2O)]·H2O (1), [C(NH2)3]3[(NpVO2)(NpVIO2)(MoO4)3(H2O)]·3H2O (2), Na3[(NpVO2)(PuVIO2)(MoO4)3(H2O)]·nH2O (3), Na6[(NpVO2)2(UVIO2)(MoO4)5]·13H2O (4), and LiNa2[(NpVO2)(NpVIO2)2(MoO4)4(H2O)]·4H2O (5) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The coordination polyhedra of the NpV and AnVI atoms in compounds 1-5 are pentagonal bipyramids. The basis of structures 1-3 is anionic layers of the composition [(NpVO2)(AnVIO2)(MoO4)3(H2O)]n3n-. Three crystallographically independent molybdate ions are tridentate-bridging ligands. The water molecule, which is a part of the anion layer, is coordinated to the NpV atom. The anionic layers in complexes 2 and 3 have the same structure, different from 1. The basis of structure 4 is anionic layers of the composition [(NpVO2)2(UVIO2)(MoO4)5]n6n-, the structure of which differs from the structure of anionic layers in 1-3. Complex 5 has a three-dimensional (3D) structure. The spectra of all compounds in the UV-visible and IR ranges were measured and analyzed.

Topological analysis of the layered uranyl compounds bearing slabs with UO2:TO4 ratio of 2:3

Nine new templated uranyl sulfates and selenates, [(H9O4)2(H2O)][(UO2)2(SO4)3(H2O)2] (H9US), [(C5H7 NO)2(H2O)][(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)2](H2O) (OUSe), [C6H6N3][H5O2] [(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)] (BH5USe), [C6H6N3][H7O3][(UO2)2(SO4)3 (H2O)](H2O) (BH7US), [C6H16N][H5O2][(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)] (TeH5USe), [C6H18N2][(UO2)2(SO4)3(H2O)] (TmUS), [H5O2]2 [(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)](H2O) (H5USe-1), [H5O2]2[(UO2)2(SeO4)3 (H2O)2](H2O)9 (H5USe-2), and [C4H14N2][(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)](H2O) (DmUSe) have been prepared by isothermal evaporation of aqueous solutions containing extra sulfuric or selenic acid. Their crystal structures can be considered as organo-inorganic hybrids constructed of alternating [(UO2)2 (TO4)3(H2O) n ]2− slabs (T = Se6+, S6+, n = 1, 2) and layers containing templating organic moieties and/or hydronium ions and water molecules. The organic and inorganic parts of the structures are linked by multiple hydrogen bonds. Besides structure description, we offer topological analysis of the inorganic fragments with UO2:TO4 ratio of 2:3 as modular units resulting from self-assembly of fundamental chains formed by [(UO2)2(TO4)2] tetramers and TO4 tetrahedra.

Effect of solution acidity on the structure of amino acid-bearing uranyl compounds

A series of uranyl sulfates and selenates templated by protonated forms of amino acids (glycine, α- and β-alanine, threonine, nicotinic, and isonicotinic acid) has been prepared via isothermal evaporation of strongly acidic solutions. Their structures have been refined by the direct methods and can be classified as inorganic [(UO2)m(TO4)n (H2O)k] (T=S6+, Se6+) moieties combined with the protonated amino acid cations, water molecules and hydronium ions. Their overall motifs demonstrate common features with related structures templated by organic amines. The role of carboxylic acid groups depends on the nature of the corresponding amino acid. They can either link two protonated organic moieties into dimers, or contribute to hydrogen bonding between organic and inorganic parts of the structure. The ammonium ends of the amino acid cations form strong directional bonds to the oxygens of the uranyl and TO4 anions.

Open-framework sodium uranyl selenate and sodium uranyl sulfate with protonated morpholino-N-acetic acid

The reaction of sodium N-morpholine acetate with selenic and sulfuric acid and uranyl nitrate results in the formation of two novel open-framework compounds, |Na(Hmfa)|[(UO2)2(SeO4)3(H2O)](H2O)2 (NaUSe) and [Na2(SO3OH)(Hmfa)]|(UO2)(SO4)2| (NaUS), respectively. Despite identical synthetic procedures, sulfate structure dramatically differs from selenate compound. Their common feature is an open-framework featuring two-dimensional system of channels occupied by protonated morpholino-N-acetic acid species. Coordination of Na atoms is different. In NaUSe, [(UO2)2 (SeO4)3(H2O)]2− layers are pillared by {Na2O8(H2O)2(Hmfa)2} complexes to form a microporous framework. In NaUS, UO7 and SO4 polyhedra of [(UO2)(SO4)2]2− chains share common oxygen atoms with Na-centered tetrameric complexes providing a three-dimensional integrity of the structure. Both of the compounds are characterized by IR spectroscopy.
