Putting the squeeze on NaCl: modelling and simulation of the pressure driven B1-B2 phase transition

Metashooting: a novel tool for free energy reconstruction from polymorphic phase transition mechanisms

We introduce a novel scheme for the mechanistic investigation of solid-solid phase transitions, which we dub 'metashooting'. Combining transition path sampling, molecular dynamics and metadynamics, this scheme allows for both a complete mechanistic analysis and detailed mapping of the free energy surface. This is illustrated by performing metashooting calculations on the pressure-induced B4/B3 → B1 phase transition in ZnO. The resulting free energy map helps to clarify the role of intermediate configurations along this activated process and the competition between different mechanistic regimes with superior accuracy. We argue that metashooting can be efficiently applied to a broader class of activated processes.

Hierarchical thermoelectrics: crystal grain boundaries as scalable phonon scatterers

Thermoelectric materials are strategically valuable for sustainable development, as they allow for the generation of electrical energy from wasted heat. In recent years several strategies have demonstrated some efficiency in improving thermoelectric properties. Dopants affect carrier concentration, while thermal conductivity can be influenced by alloying and nanostructuring. Features at the nanoscale positively contribute to scattering phonons, however those with long mean free paths remain difficult to alter. Here we use the concept of hierarchical nano-grains to demonstrate thermal conductivity reduction in rocksalt lead chalcogenides. We demonstrate that grains can be obtained by taking advantage of the reconstructions along the phase transition path that connects the rocksalt structure to its high-pressure form. Since grain features naturally change as a function of size, they impact thermal conductivity over different length scales. To understand this effect we use a combination of advanced molecular dynamics techniques to engineer grains and to evaluate thermal conductivity in PbSe. By affecting grain morphologies only, i.e. at constant chemistry, two distinct effects emerge: the lattice thermal conductivity is significantly lowered with respect to the perfect crystal, and its temperature dependence is markedly suppressed. This is due to an increased scattering of low-frequency phonons by grain boundaries over different size scales. Along this line we propose a viable process to produce hierarchical thermoelectric materials by applying pressure via a mechanical load or a shockwave as a novel paradigm for material design.

Exploring the Mechanisms of Reactions in Solution from Transition Path Sampling Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Recent advances in molecular dynamics simulations of rare reaction events and aggregation processes are reviewed. Therein the central focus is dedicated to employing the transition path sampling method to study reactions in solution. We describe systematic approaches for generating initial transition pathways and efficient strategies for computationally feasible exploration of further transition routes. The unprejudiced study of reaction mechanisms is illustrated for reactions in aqueous solution and other complex systems. Transition path sampling allows very detailed investigation of solvent effects. Apart from stabilization of reactant, transition, or product state ensembles, this also includes the role of the solvent as a heat bath and as a putative reaction partner. The latter issue is of particular importance for reactions in aqueous solutions, which involve proton-transfer steps that may be assisted by water molecules via the Grotthuss mechanism.

Understanding the nature of "superhard graphite"

Numerous experiments showed that on cold compression graphite transforms into a new superhard and transparent allotrope. Several structures with different topologies have been proposed for this phase. While experimental data are compatible with most of these models, the only way to solve this puzzle is to find which structure is kinetically easiest to form. Using state-of-the-art molecular-dynamics transition path sampling simulations, we investigate kinetic pathways of the pressure-induced transformation of graphite to various superhard candidate structures. Unlike hitherto applied methods for elucidating nature of superhard graphite, transition path sampling realistically models nucleation events necessary for physically meaningful transformation kinetics. We demonstrate that nucleation mechanism and kinetics lead to M-carbon as the final product. W-carbon, initially competitor to M-carbon, is ruled out by phase growth. Bct-C₄ structure is not expected to be produced by cold compression due to less probable nucleation and higher barrier of formation.

Periodic Space Partitioners (PSP) and their relations to Crystal Chemistry

We are looking back on 30 years development of periodic space partitioners (PSP) and their relations to their periodic relatives, i.e. minimal surfaces (PMS), zero potential surfaces (P0PS), nodal surfaces (PNS), and exponential scale surfaces. Hans-Georg von Schnering and Sten Andersson have pioneered this field especially in terms of applications to crystal chemistry. This review relates the early attempts to approximate periodic minimal surfaces which established a systematic classification of all PSP in terms space group symmetry and consecutive applications in a variety of different fields. A consistent nomenclature is outlined and different methods for deriving PSP are described. Characteristic structure factor sets which solely define PNS by can be used to discriminate structure types of a given symmetry or even to determine complicated crystal structures. The concept of PSP relates space group symmetry, topology, and chemical bonding in an intriguing way and tessellations on PSP which can be generated in a straight forward way allow to predict new framework types. Through transformation of such continuous topological forms a new entry has been found for understanding and interpreting reconstructive phase transitions. Finally we indicate the importance of PSP models for soft matter science.

Nanodomain fragmentation and local rearrangements in CdSe under pressure

Structural transformations in extended solids result from local atomic rearrangements and phase growth mechanisms. A broad class of technologically relevant properties critically depends on local structural issues connected with domain sizes, domain boundary geometries, and defects. However, a precise understanding of structural transformation mechanisms and domain formation is still an open question. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of very detailed mechanistic investigations in real materials as a prerequisite for intelligent property control. We address the problem of domain fragmentation in bulk CdSe under pressure, jointly by molecular dynamics simulations, high-pressure experiments, and HR-TEM imaging. We show that domain fragmentation is taking place in the high-pressure regime, where nucleation events generate both zinc blende (B3) and wurtzite (B4) structural motifs and, in turn, cause the final lamellar appearance observable by high-resolution TEM. A changed nucleation pattern and a modified B3/B4 ratio represents the system's response to modified external stress conditions.

Walking the path from B4- to B1-type structures in GaN

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on the wurtzite-type structure (B4) to the rocksalt-type structure (B1) pressure-induced phase transition in GaN. From this, a nucleation and growth mechanism through a tetragonal metastable configuration is found. An intermediate of h-MgO type structure suggested from static calculations is ruled out. However, the pathway through the tetragonal intermediate may be altered by defect incorporation. While the overall transformation mechanism is preserved for both vacancies and Ga substitution by indium, already a 5% aluminum substitution establishes a transition route which avoids the tetragonal structure. Changes in the transformation mechanism and the resulting stabilization of the previously metastable high-pressure modification is elaborated by tracing the interplay of phase nucleation and growth and defect incorporation.

Generation of initial trajectories for transition path sampling of chemical reactions with ab initio molecular dynamics

Transition path sampling is an innovative method for focusing a molecular dynamics simulation on a reactive event. Although transition path sampling methods can generate an ensemble of reactive trajectories, an initial reactive trajectory must be generated by some other means. In this paper, the authors have evaluated three methods for generating initial reactive trajectories for transition path sampling with ab initio molecular dynamics. The authors have tested each of these methods on a set of chemical reactions involving the breaking and making of covalent bonds: the 1,2-hydrogen elimination in the borane-ammonia adduct, a tautomerization, and the Claisen rearrangement. The first method is to initiate trajectories from the potential energy transition state, which was effective for all reactions in the test set. Assigning atomic velocities found using normal mode analysis greatly improved the success of this method. The second method uses a high temperature molecular dynamics simulation and then iteratively reduces the total energy of the simulation until a low temperature reactive trajectory is found. This was effective in generating a low temperature trajectory from an initial trajectory run at 3000 K of the tautomerization reaction, although it failed for the other two. The third uses an orbital based bias potential to find a reactive trajectory and uses this trajectory to initiate an unbiased trajectory. The authors found that a highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital bias could be used to find a reactive trajectory for the Claisen rearrangement, although it failed for the other two reactions. These techniques will help make it practical to use transition path sampling to study chemical reaction mechanisms that involve bond breaking and forming.

Unprejudiced identification of reaction mechanisms from biased transition path sampling

A method for unprejudiced investigation of reaction mechanisms from molecular-dynamics simulations is presented. It combines the transition path sampling approach with a biasing strategy, which (a) allows optimization of transition paths crossing an energy minimum of the transition state surface. The bias is then used to (b) find reaction pathways, which follow different mechanistic routes. In the first step the manifold of similar trajectories that correspond to the same mechanism is reduced to a single characteristic dynamical path. Our method then allows a systematic search for further reaction mechanisms and the related energy barriers. It is illustrated at the example of a single particle in a two-dimensional potential and of the rather complex process of the pressure-induced insertion of a helium atom into a C60 buckyball molecule.

Nucleation and growth in pressure-induced phase transitions from molecular dynamics simulations: mechanism of the reconstructive transformation of NaCl to the CsCl-type structure

We perform path sampling molecular dynamics on the pressure-induced reconstructive phase transition from NaCl to CsCl type structure. Unlike the molecular dynamics simulations prior to this work our approach does not drive the process by applying elevated pressure. As a consequence, we are able to observe nucleation events that initiate the successive transformation of the crystal. The competing phases are separated by an interface exhibiting a well-defined structure that propagates through the crystal during phase transition.
