Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Our aim was to evaluate the fluoroscopy time (FT), procedure time (PT) safety and efficacy when using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) in comparison to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance for transcatheter closure of Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect (OS-ASD). METHOD Ninety patients (n = 90) diagnosed with OS-ASD underwent transcatheter closure between March 2006 and October 2021. Fifty-seven patients were treated under ICE guidance, while 33 patients were treated under TEE guidance. RESULTS Mean age was 43 ± 15 years and 42 ± 10 years in the ICE and TEE groups, respectively. The majority of patients had a centrally placed defect. Median FT was 8.40 min versus 11.70 min (p < .001) in the ICE group compared to the TEE group, respectively. Median PT was 43 min versus 94 min (p < .001) in the ICE group compared to the TEE group, respectively. Both ICE and TEE provided high quality images. All interventions were completed successfully, except for one patient in the ICE group who experienced a device migration, the development of atrial tachycardia in one patient and atrial fibrillation in two patients in the ICE group which spontaneously cardioverted. There were no other complications. CONCLUSION This study on a consistent cohort of patients with OS-ASD undergoing percutaneous closure suggests that use of ICE is safe and efficacious. Compared to TEE, ICE demonstrated significantly shorter FT and PT, decreasing the entire duration of the procedure and x-ray exposure. No relevant differences were observed in terms of success rate and complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to establish a guidance for device retrieval based on comprehensive bench tests. BACKGROUND Device embolisation remains a major complication in transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus. Although percutaneous retrieval is feasible in the majority of cases, surgical retrieval may be required in complicated circumstances. However, the methods of transcatheter device retrieval have not been completely established. METHODS Bench tests of device retrieval were performed to verify the appropriate retrieval method according to device type/size. The devices used for testing were Amplatzer Septal Occluder (Abbott, Chicago, IL, United States of America), Figulla Flex II (Occlutech GmbH, Jena, Germany), Amplatzer Duct Occluder-I (Abbott), Amplatzer Duct Occluder-II (Abbott), and Amplatzer Vascular Plug-II (Abbott). The retrieval equipment constituted diagnostic catheters (multipurpose catheter and right Judkins catheter, 4-Fr or 5-Fr, Gadelius Medical, Tokyo, Japan), delivery sheath and cables for each device, Amplatz goose neck snares (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, United States of America), OSYPKA CATCHER (Osypka ag, Rheinfelden-Herten, Germany), and OSYPKA LASSOS (Osypka). We investigated the retrieval equipment and sheath sizes required for a successful retrieval procedure for variously sized devices. RESULTS For patent ductus arteriosus devices, the type of snare and the snaring position are considered important. For atrial septal defect devices, simple snare capture or a double-snare technique with a sufficiently large sheath is effective. Special care should be taken when using the OSYPKA CATCHER for device retrieval. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study may assist in the selection of both capture devices and a retrieval sheath or a catheter for complete retrieval.

Successful retrieval of embolised Occlutech atrial septal defect occluder from descending aorta in a 4-year-old child using a "mother and child" technique: a case report and literature review. Abstract
A 9 mm Occlutech septal occluder Flex II device was retrieved in a 4-year-old 22 kg child; A 6 Fr Cook® Flexor sheath (child) was inserted into a 9 Fr Occlutech® ASD Delivery Set (mother). Once the tip of the smaller sheath was close to the device, a 4 Fr right Judkins catheter was introduced with a snare. The right atrial hub was captured and withdrawn to the level of the 6 Fr sheath which was then withdrawn into the 9 Fr sheath before being removed completely. The "mother and child" technique offers a greater likelihood of slenderising and retrieving embolised devices.

Abstract
To assess changes in the quality of life in adult patients undergoing percutaneous device closure of atrial septal defect (ASD).We used a standard Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) that includes psychological and physiological aspects to assess and analyze the quality of life of 73 adult patients who underwent percutaneous device closure of ASD.Of the 73 patients who were investigated in this study, 67 completed questionnaires successfully. The following findings were revealed after analyzing the preoperative results and postoperative results. In some dimensions ( "physical functioning," "vitality," "general health" ), the postoperative perception was better than the preoperative status. Some differences were found in the quality of life feedback between the case group and the control group. Among the different subgroups, older patients scored lower than younger patients on most dimensions, and men seemed to perform better on "role-physical" factors than women. Unmarried people performed worse on "role-physical" and "bodily pain" than married people. Among people with different academic degrees, those with higher degrees demonstrated better scores on multiple dimensions ( "role-physical," "mental health," "social functioning," and "general health" ) than those with lower degrees.After percutaneous device closure of ASD, most adult patients feel that the quality of life is improved compared with that during the preoperative status. With the change of patients' own conditions, their quality of life seems to change differently. In order to better help patients integrate into life, psychological and physical support is still needed.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a novel, absorbable atrial septal defect (ASD) closure device made of poly‐l‐lactic acid (PLLA) in a swine model of ASD and for the first time in humans. Methods A preclinical safety study was conducted using a swine model of ASD. In a clinical setting, five pediatric patients underwent ASD closure with the PLLA device with fluoroscopic and transthoracic echocardiography guidance. The procedural results and clinical outcomes at 1 day, 30 days, 3 months, and 6 months after closure were analyzed. Results The 24‐ and 36‐month follow‐up results of the preclinical study demonstrated that the PLLA device exhibited good endothelialization and degradability in the swine model. In the clinical study, successful device implantation was achieved in all five patients (median age, 3.6 years; range, 3.1–6.5 years). The mean defect size was (13.6 ± 2.7) mm. Follow‐up at 30 days, 3 months, and 6 months was completed in all five cases. The complete defect closure rates with no residual shunt at 30 days, 3 months, and 6 months follow‐up were 60% (3/5), 80% (4/5), and 80% (4/5), respectively. No device dislodgement, significant aortic valve or mitral valve regurgitation, new onset cardiac arrhythmia, or other adverse events were reported. Conclusion The study results demonstrated that it is feasible to implant the PLLA device for closure of small to medium sized ASDs without significant residual shunts or severe adverse events in humans. The PLLA device exhibited good endothelialization and degradability in the swine model at 24 and 36 months. Further studies to evaluate long‐term safety and effectiveness with the device in a large cohort of patients are warranted.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a modified loop snare technique for retrieval of difficult inferior vena cava (IVC) filters and migrated coils.A retrospective review of Günther Tulip filter retrievals between January 2014 and February 2017 was performed. A total of 316 IVC filter retrievals were attempted. In 25 cases, the standard technique had failed and our modified loop snare technique was subsequently attempted in 21 of these patients.The retrievals were successful in 20 cases (mean dwell time, 42.6 days, range, 14-102 days). The dwell time of the one failure was 46 days. The retrieval rate increased from 92.1% with the standard technique to 98.4% with the combination of the standard and modified loop snare technique. Unsuccessful retrieval was due to migration and endothelialization of the filter. This technique can also be used to remove migrated coils which cannot be captured by standard techniques. There were no complications from the retrievals.Tilt and endothelialization of filters are the main factors resulting in unsuccessful retrievals with the standard technique. In the present study, we describe an alternative technique for difficult IVC filter retrievals, which can also be used to capture migrated coils and occluders in the aorta and heart.
