Abstract
Argyria encompasses the different cosmetic alterations that can develop if enough silver particles deposit in a specific tissue, typically in the skin, ranging from localized dark-blue macules to a generalized slate-gray/bluish tinge following systemic absorption. This work aims to fully review the state of the art regarding pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and relevant clinical and forensic features of argyria. Argyria has been diagnosed in a wide range of ages, both sexes and varied ethnicities, with no known individual predisposing factors. Ultraviolet radiation with subsequence increases of melanin production aggravates the discoloration due to a reduction in the silver deposits. Physical examination and silver exposure in the anamnesis can be highly suggestive of the diagnosis, but a histopathological analysis with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy is required to unequivocally determine the discoloration etiology. Safe and effective treatment has only been accomplished with laser techniques, though only a few cases have been reported and with limited follow-up time. In conclusion, argyria typically has an occupational or iatrogenic etiology. It should be suspected when a patient presents with typical skin or eye lesions. A seemingly viable treatment modality, with laser technology, is finally within the horizon.

Abstract
The use of silver preparations in medicine is becoming increasingly popular. The basic aim of this evaluation was to review the literature on the clinical (in vivo) and antibacterial potential of silver preparations in ophthalmic diseases. The second goal was to summarize the results of experimental research on the use of silver preparations in ophthalmology. The third objective was to present a method for stabilizing eye drops containing silver (I) complex. Analysis of the pH stability of the silver (I) complex with metronidazole in the prepared dosage form (eye drops) was carried out. Most silver preparations are clinically used for topical application. Few experimental results indicate the usefulness of intraocular or systemic administration of silver (I) preparations as an alternative or additional therapy in infectious and angiogenic eye diseases. The development of a new formulation increases the stability of the dosage form. New forms of silver (I) products will certainly find application in the treatment of many ophthalmic diseases. One of the most important features of the silver (I) complex is its capacity to break down bacterial resistance. The new eye drops formula can significantly improve comfort of use. Due to their chemical nature, silver (I) compounds are difficult to stabilize, especially in the finished dosage form.

Abstract
When looking for diseases of the skin, this is usually done in a holistic way, automatically and unconsciously, by recognizing localization, distribution, and appearance of the primary or secondary skin lesions. When Robert Willan (1757-1812) introduced the concept of morphology of skin lesions, it became the basis for the classification of dermatoses. Apart from ethnic factors, the various dermatoses comprise a rainbow of colors ranging from the most common red color to yellow, blue, brown, silver, green, black, and white.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present a novel case of ocular argyrosis mimicking conjunctival melanoma. METHODS A 48-year-old man who is a jewelry manufacturer presented with raised pigmented lesions in the inferior fornices of both eyes. Brown-black colored, follicle-like, masses were observed in both fornices. RESULTS An incisional biopsy confirmed the presence of silver and the diagnosis of ocular argyrosis. CONCLUSIONS Despite its limited negative health effects, ocular argyrosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of conjunctival pigmented lesions because of the potential for misidentification of neoplastic growth.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this report is to present a case of a patient, metal foundry worker, who had been exposed to industrial silver salts for over 20 years. It is well established that chronic exposure to silver compounds can cause accumulation of silver deposits in various tissues. This condition is referred to as argyrosis or argyria, whereas changes related to eye tissues are defined as ocular argyrosis. Methods A complete eye examination, corneal confocal microscopy, kinetic and static visual field test, posterior segment optical coherent tomography, pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP), flash visual evoked potentials, multifocal electroretinogram, pattern electroretinogram (PERG), full-field electroretinography (FERG) and electrooculogram were all performed. Results Eye examination revealed decreased visual acuity, corneal deposits and drusenoid changes within the macula. Although electrophysiology tests did not show changes in the function of retinal pigment epithelium, they revealed abnormal function of photoreceptors in the central and peripheral retina. PERG abnormalities and delayed latency of P100 wave in PVEP confirmed impaired function of the inner layers of the retina in the macular region. Conclusions Corneal confocal microscopy and electrophysiological tests may help confirm the diagnosis of ocular argyrosis.

Abstract
Localized cutaneous argyria is a rare condition secondary to skin deposition of silver following exposure to substances containing this metal. The clinical appearance and dermoscopy findings require deep melanocytic lesions and particularly melanoma metastasis to be ruled out. Silver deposits are usually confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and/or energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Herein we describe the in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) features observed in one case of localized cutaneous argyria. These features include the presence of a hyperrefractile network in the papillary dermis and a periadnexal dotted bright pattern. In vivo RCM might be a useful tool for an early diagnosis of this uncommon entity.

Abstract
Silver is a strong antibiotic that is increasingly incorporated into consumer products as a bulk, salt, or nanosilver, thus potentially causing side-effects related to human exposure. However, the fate and behavior of (nano)silver in the human body is presently not well understood. In order to aggregate the existing experimental information, a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model (PBPK) was developed in this study for ionic silver and nanosilver. The structure of the model was established on the basis of toxicokinetic data from intravenous studies. The number of calibrated parameters was minimized in order to enhance the predictive capability of the model. We validated the model structure for both silver forms by reproducing exposure conditions (dermal, oral, and inhalation) of in vivo experiments and comparing simulated and experimentally assessed organ concentrations. Therefore, the percutaneous, intestinal, or pulmonary absorption fraction was estimated based on the blood silver concentration of the respective experimental data set. In all of the cases examined, the model could successfully predict the biodistribution of ionic silver and 15-150 nm silver nanoparticles, which were not coated with substances designed to prolong the circulatory time (eg, polyethylene glycol). Furthermore, the results of our model indicate that: (1) within the application domain of our model, the particle size and coating had a minor influence on the biodistribution; (2) in vivo, it is more likely that silver nanoparticles are directly stored as insoluble salt particles than dissolve into Ag⁺; and (3) compartments of the mononuclear phagocytic system play a minor role in exposure levels that are relevant for human consumers. We also give an example of how the model can be used in exposure and risk assessments based on five different exposure scenarios, namely dietary intake, use of three separate consumer products, and occupational exposure.

Abstract
This case report describes the clinical, autofluorescence, and optical coherent tomography findings in a patient with panocular argyrosis secondary to chronic intake of diluted silver nitrate salts in his water supply. An 86-year-old Caucasian male with a distinctive gray-bluish hue of the skin presented to our clinic, having developed a slow decrease in visual acuity in both eyes and nyctalopia for the past 2 years. Based on the patient’s history of chronic intake of silver nitrate salts and a positive skin biopsy (performed by the dermatology department, data not shown), a diagnosis of panocular argyrosis was made. Fluorescein angiography showed choroidal blockage with a completely dark choroid. Fundus autofluorescence was within normal limits. Optical coherent tomography showed multiple excrescences of retinal pigment epithelium in both eyes. Although the drusen-like changes on fundus examination and retinal pigment epithelium changes may account for the diminished vision, the presence of concomitant nyctalopia suggests underlying damage of the photoreceptors.

Abstract
The authors present data of an examination of a patient aged 70 suffering from a relatively rare dermatosis - argyria. The diagnosis
was confirmed by professional case history, results of the histological examination of the skin and determination of the silver
content in the biological environments and hair. The authors describe problems with diagnostics and treatment of the disease.
