Comparison of perceptions on the dental aesthetics of different malocclusions between orthodontists and schoolchildren

Contextual and Individual Determinants of Anterior Open Bite in Adolescents

OBJECTIVE

Studying the broader determinants of anterior open bite (AOB) may guide more equitable policies.This study estimates the prevalence of AOB in Brazilian adolescents and its association with contextual and individual determinants.

METHODOLOGY

The data for dentofacial anomalies in 15- to 19-year-olds from the National Oral Health Survey SBBrasil 2010 were analysed (N = 4748). AOB was based on the Dental Aesthetic Index (AOB = 0; AOB > 0); the contextual variables were the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Gini Index (2010). The individual sociodemographic variables included sex (male, female), self-reported skin colour/race (white, black, brown, and indigenous + yellow), family income (≥4 minimum wage [MW]; 0-3 MW), and educational attainment (ideal, delayed). The individual clinical variables were decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) (0, ≥1), first permanent molar loss (0, ≤3, 4), and molar relationship (normal, half cusp, full cusp). Multilevel logistic regression models with random intercepts and fixed slopes were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (95% CIs).

RESULTS

AOB prevalence in Brazil was 8.78% (95% CI, 6.85-11.20) at 15 to 19 years of age. The lowest prevalence was in São Luis (2.63%; 95% CI, 0.58-11.03) and the highest was in João Pessoa (29.85%; 95% CI, 15.93-48.85), both capitals of the northeast Brazilian region. A higher prevalence of AOB (OR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.04-2.80) was observed in municipalities with a lower HDI. Adolescents who declared their skin colour black, with lower family income, with delayed education, with DMFT ≥ 1, who lost 4 permanent first molars, and who had a complete molar cusp relationship were more likely to have AOB.

CONCLUSIONS

AOB varied amongst Brazilian municipalities. The HDI plays an important role in the prevalence of AOB; individual social determinants have also been associated with AOB malocclusion in adolescents.

Perception and attitude of Mongolians on malocclusion

Background/purpose

This study assessed the perception and attitude of Mongolians on malocclusion and compared the perceptions with researchers’ perceptions on malocclusion, and this study aimed to determine factors influencing the self-perception of laypeople.

Materials and methods

In addition, we evaluated the correlation between the subjective and objective perceptions of participants. In a random sample of 133 people (39.8% men and 60.2% women) aged 18–55 years, subjective perceptions were assessed using a questionnaire (oral aesthetic subjective impact scale), and objective perceptions were assessed using 10 intraoral frontal photographs of the aesthetic component of index of orthodontic treatment need (AC-IOTN) and six intraoral lateral photographs of the aesthetic component of lateral occlusion (AC-LO).

Results

A significant association was observed between participants' self-perception and researchers' ratings (P < 0.001). The appearance of teeth was significantly correlated with participants’ self-rating by using AC-IOTN and AC-LO. Most people (74%) believed that well-aligned teeth improve the overall facial appearance. Sex, monthly income, and education level significantly influenced the self-perception of participants on malocclusion.

Conclusion

Patients’ perception and attitude cannot be overlooked because they are some of the crucial aspects of the entire treatment.

Perception of Dentofacial Aesthetics in School Children and Their Parents

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of this research was to examine the attitudes and perceptions of dentofacial aesthetics among different age groups.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 The sample consisted of elementary-school students from the city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their parents. This study included 314 subjects: 157 children and 157 parents. The children's group consisted of 85 (54.14%) males and 72 (45.85%) females, aged 9 to 15 years.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Descriptive statistics were used to determine frequency distribution and percentages for all variables. A chi-squared (x ²) test was used to determine the association between variables and a p-value < 0.05 was considered significant for all the differences and associations.

RESULTS

 For the dentofacial appearance with no teeth irregularity or with severe teeth irregularity, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) (post-hoc tests-Tukey's HSD) indicated that the difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.06) relative to rank matching between all three subject groups.For dentofacial appearance with mild teeth irregularity, an ANOVA (post-hoc tests-Tukey's HSD) showed statistical difference (p = 0.07) between the teenage group of subjects relative to pre-teenage group of subjects and adult group of subjects.

CONCLUSION

 Attitudes about desirable and acceptable dental aesthetics differ in younger children compared with older children and parents. Ten years old children find good function with poor aesthetics more pleasing, while 14 years old children find aesthetics with bad function as more pleasing.
