Application of magnetic nanomaterials in magnetic-chromatography: A review

With the advent of nanotechnology and its development, there have been dramatic advances in various aspects of diverse sciences. Nanotechnology encompasses the manipulating matter to create nanometre-scale materials with prodigious features and their implementation in a vast range of applications. The topic that is the current debate in today's scientific community and the transformation origin in modern technologies. Magnetic nanomaterials belong to the group of materials mainly consisting of a magnetic component, such as iron, and a chemical functionality agent. Hitherto, several reports on these materials have been published in various sciences, including chemistry, and their applications have been discussed from different perspectives. One of the most interesting aspects of these materials is in a special type of chromatographic techniques, called "magnetic-chromatography" as well as "magneto-chromatography". The subject that has been somewhat underestimated compared to the other practical aspects of these materials. This review devotes to the recent issue and seeks to address the principles, benefits, challenges, analytical data, and potential applications of magnetic-chromatography in ions separation, size fractionation of magnetic nanoparticles, and isolation of biologically active organic molecules. Also, the new aspects and future trends of this technique are discussed.

Magnetic fiber headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to GC-MS for the extraction and quantitation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

A technique was developed for magnetic fiber headspace-solid phase microextraction (MF-HS-SPME) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The efficiency of the extraction of a steel SPME fiber coated with an aminoethyl-functionalized SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous 15; a nanoporous sorbent) is substantially improved after its magnetization during HS-SPME. The effects of magnetic field strength, extraction temperature, extraction time, moisture content of the sample, desorption time and desorption temperature were optimized using a simplex method. The application of a moderately strong magnetic field to the fiber results in up to 135% increase in the extraction efficiency and wider linear dynamic ranges. The PAHs (specifically naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene) were then quantified by GC-MS analysis. Comparison of an electromagnet and a permanent magnet indicated the superior effect of the permanent magnet for the target analytes due to the Ohmic heating of the magnetic coil and its negative effect on the extraction of some of the PAHs. The limits of detections of the PAHs are between 0.17 to 0.57 ng g^-1 by using the electromagnet, and between 0.10 and 0.32 ng g^-1 for the permanent magnet. Relative standard deviations of 2.9 to 7.6% were obtained for six replicated analyses of the analytes. The method was applied to some polluted soil samples, and satisfactory results were obtained. Retention and Separation Changes of Ternary and Quaternary Alkaloids from Chelidonium majus L. by TLC Under the Influence of External Magnetic Field

Thin layer techniques proved their usefulness in the analysis of plant extract material. Thanks to their low operation costs, high sample throughput and possibility to gather chromatographic data for the whole sample in a single act, they allowed to find, and in some cases identify, active ingredients often hidden in sophisticated plant extract matrices. It was also proved that the presence of a magnetic field changes the retention of some substances, and moreover changes the separation efficiency of chromatographic systems. In the presented experiment, retention, efficiency and separation abilities of TLC chromatographic systems for mixtures of alkaloids under the influence of magnetic field depending on inductivity of the magnetic field, the saturation of chromatographic chamber and quantity of chromatographed substances were investigated. The results obtained were tested on real plant extracts that revealed the ability of chromatography in a magnetic field for separation of ternary and quaternary alkaloids from Chelidonium majus L. Our experiments proved that the presence of magnetic field induction lines perpendicular to the chromatographic plate plane can influence the width and retention of chromatographed substances, and can be considered as a tool for separation adjustment of plant extracts containing ternary and quaternary alkaloids.
