Mixed Approach to Incorporate Self-Consistency into Order-N LCAO Methods

Ab initio localized basis set study of structural parameters and elastic properties of HfO2 polymorphs

The SIESTA approach based on pseudopotentials and a localized basis set is used to calculate the electronic, elastic and equilibrium properties of P 2₁/c, Pbca, Pnma, Fm3m, P4₂nmc and Pa3 phases of HfO₂. Using separable Troullier-Martins norm-conserving pseudopotentials which include partial core corrections for Hf, we tested important physical properties as a function of the basis set size, grid size and cut-off ratio of the pseudo-atomic orbitals (PAOs). We found that calculations in this oxide with the LDA approach and using a minimal basis set (simple zeta, SZ) improve calculated phase transition pressures with respect to the double-zeta basis set and LDA (DZ-LDA), and show similar accuracy to that determined with the PPPW and GGA approach. Still, the equilibrium volumes and structural properties calculated with SZ-LDA compare better with experiments than the GGA approach. The bandgaps and elastic and structural properties calculated with DZ-LDA are accurate in agreement with previous state of the art ab initio calculations and experimental evidence and cannot be improved with a polarized basis set. These calculated properties show low sensitivity to the PAO localization parameter range between 40 and 100 meV. However, this is not true for the relative energy, which improves upon decrease of the mentioned parameter. We found a non-linear behaviour in the lattice parameters with pressure in the P 2₁/c phase, showing a discontinuity of the derivative of the a lattice parameter with respect to external pressure, as found in experiments. The common enthalpy values calculated with the minimal basis set give pressure transitions of 3.3 and 10.8 GPa for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively, in accordance with different high pressure experimental values.

Localized versus delocalized bonding in the K5Bi4 metallic salt

The electronic structure of one member of the A(5)Pn(4) family of metallic salts, K(5)Bi(4), has been studied by means of first-principles density functional calculations. It is shown that the alkali and pnictide orbitals mix considerably providing for a large covalent bonding contribution to the stability of the compound. It is suggested that solids of the A(5)Pn(4) family of compounds (A = K, Rb, Cs; Pn = As, Sb, Bi) should have better conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the tetrameric pnictide units and that the low-temperature transition in the antimonides is an order-disorder transition associated with one of the alkali positions.

Possible nonactivated conductivity of the low-dimensional ternary nitride Ca(2)GeN(2)

The electronic structure of the recently reported ternary nitride Ca(2)GeN(2) has been studied by means of first-principles density functional calculations. The relatively short nonbonded Ge...Ge contacts along the direction approximately perpendicular to the plane of the bent GeN(2) units confer a large dispersion to the energy bands based on the antibonding pi-type level of GeN(2). This feature as well as the smaller but non-negligible interactions along the perpendicular directions suggests that this material, despite being built from discrete units, may exhibit a metallic behavior. This study suggests that the nature of the alkaline-earth atom has a crucial influence on the electrical conductivity of this type of phase.

Absence of dc-conductivity in lambda-DNA

The electrical conductivity of biomaterials on a molecular scale is of fundamental interest in the life sciences. We perform first principles electronic structure calculations, which clearly indicate that lambda-DNA chains should present large resistance values. We also present two direct procedures to measure electrical currents through DNA molecules adsorbed on mica. The lower limit for the resistivity is 10(6) Omega . cm, in agreement with our calculations. We also show that low energy electron bombardment induces a rapid contamination and dramatically affects the measured conductivity, thus providing an explanation to recent reports of high DNA conductivity.
