Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain abscess (BA) is a rare, but severe infection and experimental BA animal models may prove crucial for advances in treatment. This review describes the development of experimental BA models and the clinical advances obtained from these, in a historical perspective. MATERIAL AND METHODS Experimental BA studies from inception until June 15, 2022, were included by searching the PubMed and Embase databases. Inclusion required the use of an experimental BA animal model. Non-bacterial BA models, in vitro studies, veterinarian case-reports, and articles written in non-English language were excluded. Bias was not systematically assessed, and the review was not registered at the PROSPERO. RESULTS 79 studies were included. The majority of animal BA models have been based on small rodents using Staphylococcus aureus. The models have delineated the natural development of BA and provided detailed descriptions of the histopathological characteristics consisting of a necrotic centre surrounded by layers of inflammatory cells and fibroblasts encapsulated by a dense collagenous layer. Radiological studies of animal BA have been shown to correlate with the corresponding stages of human BA in both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging and may guide diagnosis as well as the timing of neurosurgical intervention. Moreover, pharmacokinetic studies of the intracavitary penetration of various antimicrobials have helped inform medical treatment of BA. Other studies have examined the diverse effects of corticosteroids including decreased cerebral oedema, intracranial pressure, and intracavitary drug concentration, whereas concerns on decreased or weakened capsule formation could not be confirmed. Finally, studies on the immunological response to BA have highlighted potential future immunomodulatory targets. CONCLUSIONS Animal models have been vital for improvements in the management of BA. Experimental BA models resembling human disease including polymicrobial infection by oral cavity flora in large animals are needed.

Abstract
Meningitis is the infection of the meninges, which are connective tissue membranes covering the brain, and it most commonly affects the leptomeninges. Clinically, meningitis may present with fever, neck stiffness, altered mental status, headache, vomiting, and neurological deficits. Encephalitis is an infection of the brain, which usually presents with fever, altered mental status, neurological deficits, and seizure. Meningitis and encephalitis are serious conditions which could also coexist, with high morbidity and mortality, thus requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. Imaging plays an important role in the clinical management of these conditions, especially Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is indicated to exclude mimics and evaluate the presence of complications. The aim of this review is to depict imaging findings of the most common meningitis and encephalitis.

Abstract
Brain abscesses are localized infections in the brain's parenchyma, characterized by inflammation, pus formation, and the development of a surrounding capsule. These lesions typically occur due to underlying factors such as immunosuppression, ear and sinus infections, and contamination during neurosurgery. While brain abscesses are a life-threatening complication of cyanotic heart defects, they are rarely reported, with only sporadic cases previously documented. This article presents the case of an eight-year-old male patient with an uncorrected transposition of the great arteries, who was evaluated for symptoms including headache, fever, and neurological focalization. Diagnostic imaging revealed three lesions consistent with brain abscesses. Furthermore, the causal agents were identified as Streptococcus intermedius and Fusobacterium spp., representing oral microorganisms. Additionally, the patient exhibited poor oral hygiene and dental caries in multiple teeth. This article discusses and integrates the possible pathophysiological mechanisms that allowed a localized dental infection to spread hematogenously and cause brain abscesses in this patient. Prompt management of the infectious source is crucial to prevent a poor prognosis associated with brain abscesses. Therefore, this case emphasizes the importance of regular dental assessments and thromboprophylaxis for patients with underlying cardiomyopathies that cause right-to-left shunting to prevent potential complications.

Abstract
Cerebral abscesses are uncommon space occupying lesions; they are associated with high morbidity and mortality, though are potentially treatable. Patients often present with non-specific symptoms and may have few clinical signs. Routine clinical imaging may not give a definite diagnosis, as the findings can be indistinguishable from those of other intracranial mass lesions. We review the role of advanced MR techniques to characterise brain abscesses and discuss the role of imaging in monitoring their response to the treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the value of perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) in the differential diagnosis of sellar and parasellar tumors, as an additional sequence in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol. Analysis was based on a substantial group of subjects and included 124 brain and pituitary MRI examinations with a dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) PWI sequence. The following perfusion parameters were determined for the tumors: relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), relative peak height (rPH) and relative percentage of signal intensity recovery (rPSR). To ensure greater repeatability, each of the aforementioned parameters was calculated as: arithmetic mean of the values of the whole tumor, arithmetic mean of the maximum values on each axial slice within the tumor and maximum values derived from the whole tumor. In our study, we established that meningiomas compared to both non-functional and hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas (pituitary neuroendocrine tumors-PitNET) had significantly higher values of rCBV with cut-off points set at 3.45 and 3.54, respectively (mean rCBV). Additionally, meningiomas presented significantly higher maximum and mean maximum rPH values compared to adenomas. DSC PWI imaging adds significant value to conventional MRI examinations and can be helpful in differentiating equivocal pituitary tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with foreign bodies in the digestive tract are often encountered, but complete penetration of a foreign body through the gastrointestinal tract is rare, and the choice of imaging method is very important. Improper selection may lead to missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis.
CASE SUMMARY An 81-year-old man was diagnosed as having a liver malignancy after he took magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (CT) examinations. The pain improved after the patient accepted gamma knife treatment. However, he was admitted to our hospital 2 mo later due to fever and abdominal pain. This time, he received a contrast-enhanced CT scan, which showed fish-boon-like foreign bodies in the liver with peripheral abscess formation, then he went to the superior hospital for surgery. It lasted for more than 2 mo from the onset of the disease to the surgical treatment. A 43-year-old woman with a 1 mo history of a perianal mass with no obvious pain or discomfort was diagnosed as having an anal fistula with the formation of a local small abscess cavity. Clinical perianal abscess surgery was performed, and fish bone foreign body was found in perianal soft tissue during the operation.
CONCLUSION For patients with pain symptoms, the possibility of foreign body perforation should be considered. Magnetic resonance imaging is not comprehensive and that a plain computed tomography scan of the pain area is necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Differentiating neoplastic and non-neoplastic brain lesions is essential to make management recommendations and convey prognosis, but the distinction between brain tumors and their mimics in practice may prove challenging. The aim of this study is to provide the incidence of brain tumor mimics in the neuro-oncology setting and describe this patient subset. METHODS Retrospective study of adult patients referred to the Division of Neuro-oncology for a presumed diagnosis of brain tumor from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2017, who later satisfied the diagnosis of a non-neoplastic entity based on neuroimaging, clinical course, and/or histopathology evaluation. We classified tumor mimic entities according to clinical, radiologic, and laboratory characteristics that correlated with the diagnosis. RESULTS The incidence of brain tumor mimics was 3.4% (132/3897). The etiologies of the non-neoplastic entities were vascular (35%), inflammatory non-demyelinating (26%), demyelinating (15%), cysts (10%), infectious (9%), and miscellaneous (5%). In our study, 38% of patients underwent biopsy to determine diagnosis, but in 26%, the biopsy was inconclusive. DISCUSSION Brain tumor mimics represent a small but important subset of the neuro-oncology referrals. Vascular, inflammatory, and demyelinating etiologies represent two-thirds of cases. Recognizing the clinical, radiologic and laboratory characteristics of such entities may improve resource utilization and prevent unnecessary as well as potentially harmful diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW We conducted a systematic review of the literature to update findings on the epidemiology and the management of cerebral abscesses in immunocompetent patients. RECENT FINDINGS Observational studies suggest that the overall prognosis has improved over the last decades but mortality rates remain high. Several parameters may contribute to a better prognosis, including the identification of common risk factors for brain abscess, the systematic use of brain MRI at diagnosis, the implementation of appropriate neurosurgical and microbiological techniques for diagnosis, the optimization of the antibacterial treatment based on epidemiology and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies, and a long-term follow-up for detection of secondary complications. Outcome research on brain abscess is mainly based on observational studies. Randomized controlled trials have yet to be performed to identify clinically relevant interventions associated with improved patient-centered outcomes. SUMMARY Our review highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to optimize brain abscess management both at the acute phase and in the long-term. Randomized controlled studies are urgently needed to identify interventions associated with improved outcomes.
