FeII, CoII and NiII complexes based on 1-chloro-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine: synthesis, structures, single-molecule magnetic and electrocatalytic properties

Three complexes [Fe2(L)2Cl4] (1), [Co2(L)2Cl4] (2) and [Ni(L)2Cl2]·CH2Cl2 (3) were synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 exhibits a slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. Complexes 1–3 are catalytically active toward the OER.

Lanthanide nitrato complexes bridged by the bis-tridentate ligand 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine: Syntheses, crystal structures, Hirshfeld surface analyses, luminescence properties, DFT calculations, and magnetic behavior

Six dinuclear lanthanide(III) nitrato complexes [Ln(NO₃)₃(H₂O)]₂(μ-tppz) (where tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl) pyrazine and Ln(III) = Nd (1), Sm (2), Eu (3), Gd (4), Tb (5), and Dy (6)) with bis-tridentate N-heterocyclic 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine as bridging ligand have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized via elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and powder X-ray diffraction. The 3-D Hirshfeld surface and 2-D fingerprint plots show that the main interactions in 1-6 are the O⋯H/H⋯O intermolecular interactions with relative contributions of about 62%. Although the poor lanthanide(III)-centered luminescence properties clearly point to the efficiency of nonradiative quenching processes (presence of water molecules in the coordination sphere of the lanthanide(III) ions), the ligand tppz is better suited to sensitize the lanthanide(III)'s emissions of Eu^III and Nd^III than Sm^III, Tb^III, and Dy^III. Finally, the magnetic data of Dy^III comple×6 reveals antiferromagnetic coupling between Dy^III ions.

Iron(III) Azadiphenolate Compounds in a New Family of Spin Crossover Iron(II)–Iron(III) Mixed-Valent Complexes

A new family of mixed valent, double salt spin crossover compounds containing anionic FeIII and cationic FeII compounds i.e., [FeII{(pz)3CH}2][FeIII(azp)2]2·2H2O (4), [FeII(TPPZ)2][FeIII(azp)2]2]·H2O (5) and [FeII(TPPZ)2][FeIII(azp)2]2]·H2O·3MeCN (6) (where (pz)3CH = tris-pyrazolylmethane, TPPZ = 2,3,5,6, tetrapyridylpyrazine and azp2− = azadiphenolato) has been synthesized and characterised. This is the first time that the rare anionic spin crossover species, [FeIII(azp)2]−, has been used as an anionic component in double salts complexes. Single crystal structures and magnetic studies showed that compound 6 exhibits a spin transition relating to one of the FeIII centres of the constituent FeII and FeIII sites. Crystal structures of the anionic and cationic precursor complexes were also analysed and compared to the double salt products thus providing a clearer picture for future crystal design in double spin crossover materials. We discuss the effects that the solvent and counterion had on the crystal packing and spin crossover properties.

A Redox-Active Bridging Ligand to Promote Spin Delocalization, High-Spin Complexes, and Magnetic Multi-Switchability

A dinuclear Co^II complex, [Co₂ (tphz)(tpy)₂ ]ⁿ⁺ (n=4, 3 or 2; tphz: tetrapyridophenazine; tpy: terpyridine), has been assembled using the redox-active and strongly complexing tphz bridging ligand. The magnetic properties of this complex can be tuned from spin-crossover with T_1/2 ≈470 K for the pristine compound (n=4) to single-molecule magnet with an S_T =5/2 spin ground state when once reduced (n=3) to finally a diamagnetic species when twice reduced (n=2). The two successive and reversible reductions are concomitant with an increase of the spin delocalization within the complex, promoting remarkably large magnetic exchange couplings and high-spin species even at room temperature.

Study of the complex formation between the [Cu(bpca)]+ secondary building unit and the aromatic N donors 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz) and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp)

Alternating anionic and cationic slices (1) and supramolecular layers (2) resulted from the assembly between [Cu(bpca)]⁺ and polypyridine ligands.

Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the complex [ReCl3(tppz)]·MeCN

The paper reports the synthesis, X-ray structure and a deep analysis of the variable-temperature magnetic data of the new complex [ReCl₃(tppz)]·MeCN being a very scarce example of mononuclear Re(iii) complexes incorporating nitrogen donor ligands.

Ytterbocene Charge-Transfer Molecular Wire Complexes

A systematic study of the novel charge-transfer [(f)14-(pi)0-(f)14 --> (f)13-(pi)2-(f)13] electronic state found in 2:1 metal-to-ligand adducts of the type [(Cp)2Yb](BL)[Yb(Cp)2] [BL = tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz) (1), 6',6' '-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,2':4',4'':2'',2'''-quaterpyridine (qtp) (2), 1,4-di(terpyridyl)-benzene (dtb) (3), Cp = (C5Me5)] has been conducted with the aim of determining the effects of increased Yb-Yb separation on the magnetic and electronic properties of these materials. The neutral [(f)13-(pi)2-(f)13], cationic [(f)13-(pi)1-(f)13] and dicationic [(f)13-(pi)0-(f)13] states of these complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray crystallography, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectroscopic and magnetic data for the neutral bimetallic complexes is consistent with an [(f)13(pi)2(f)13] ground-state electronic configuration in which each ytterbocene fragment donates one electron to give a singlet dianionic bridging ligand with two paramagnetic Yb(III) centers. The voltammetric data demonstrate that the electronic interaction in the neutral molecular wires 1-3, as manifested in the separation between successive metal reduction waves, is large compared to analogous transition metal systems. Electronic spectra for the neutral and monocationic bimetallic species are dominated by pi-pi and pi-pi transitions, masking the f-f bands that are expected to best reflect the electronic metal-metal interactions. However, these metal-localized transitions are observed when the electrons are removed from the bridging ligand via chemical oxidation to yield the dicationic species, and they suggest very little electronic interaction between metal centers in the absence of pi electrons on the bridging ligands. Analysis of the magnetic data reveals that the qtp complex displays antiferromagnetic coupling of the type Yb(alpha)(alphabeta)Yb(beta) at approximately 13 K.

Formation of a solubilized cobalt block oligomer from a M2L-type double helicate

The multi-dentate ligand, 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2,2'-bipyridyl)pyrazine (L) and divalent cobalt self-assemble to a block co-polymer-like oligomer in solution, which contains at least the L(7)Co(8) fragment. The extent of oligomerization is sensitive to the water content in acetonitrile solution. In the solid state, the simple monomer [LCo(2)(CH(3)CN)(4)][ClO(4)](4) is isolated. The X-ray structure of the crystallized material (containing four CH(3)CN solvate molecules) reveals a double-helical complex with two heptadentate Co(II) sites, and a helical pitch of approximately 28.1 A. Coupled Co(I/II) redox processes are observed between the two metal centres.
