Abstract
Dental implants are regularly employed in tooth replacement, the good clinical outcome of which is strictly correlated to the choice of an appropriate implant biomaterial. Titanium-based implants are considered the gold standard for rehabilitation of edentulous spaces. However, the insurgence of allergic reactions, cellular sensitization and low integration with dental and gingival tissues lead to poor osseointegration, affecting the implant stability in the bone and favoring infections and inflammatory processes in the peri-implant space. These failures pave the way to develop and improve new biocompatible implant materials. CERID dental implants are made of a titanium core embedded in a zirconium dioxide ceramic layer, ensuring absence of corrosion, a higher biological compatibility and a better bone deposition compared to titanium ones. We investigated hDPSCs' biological behavior, i.e., cell adhesion, proliferation, morphology and osteogenic potential, when seeded on both CERID and titanium implants, before and after cleansing with two different procedures. SEM and AFM analysis of the surfaces showed that while CERID disks were not significantly affected by the cleansing system, titanium ones exhibited well-visible modifications after brush treatment, altering cell morphology. The proliferation rate of DPSCs was increased for titanium, while it remained unaltered for CERID. Both materials hold an intrinsic potential to promote osteogenic commitment of neuro-ectomesenchymal stromal cells. Interestingly, the CERID surface mitigated the immune response by inducing an upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 on activated PBMCs when a pro-inflammatory microenvironment was established. Our in vitro results pave the way to further investigations aiming to corroborate the potential of CERID implants as suitable biomaterials for dental implant applications.

Abstract
Dental implants have been extensively used in patients with defects or loss of dentition. However, the loss or failure of dental implants is still a critical problem in clinic. Therefore, many methods have been designed to enhance the osseointegration between the implants and native bone. Herein, the challenge and healing process of dental implant operation will be briefly introduced. Then, various surface modification methods and emerging biomaterials used to tune the properties of dental implants will be summarized comprehensively.

Abstract
Zirconia is a promising material for dental implants; however, an appropriate surface modification procedure has not yet been identified. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a nanotechnology that deposits thin films of metal oxides or metals on materials. The aim of this study was to deposit thin films of titanium dioxide (TiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and zinc oxide (ZnO) on zirconia disks (ZR-Ti, ZR-Al, ZR-Si, and ZR-Zn, respectively) using ALD and evaluate the cell proliferation abilities of mouse fibroblasts (L929) and mouse osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1) on each sample. Zirconia disks (ZR; diameter 10 mm) were fabricated using a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing system. Following the ALD of TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, or ZnO thin film, the thin-film thickness, elemental distribution, contact angle, adhesion strength, and elemental elution were determined. The L929 and MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation and morphologies on each sample were observed on days 1, 3, and 5 (L929) and days 1, 4, and 7 (MC3T3-E1). The ZR-Ti, ZR-Al, ZR-Si, and ZR-Zn thin-film thicknesses were 41.97, 42.36, 62.50, and 61.11 nm, respectively, and their average adhesion strengths were 163.5, 140.9, 157.3, and 161.6 mN, respectively. The contact angle on ZR-Si was significantly lower than that on all the other specimens. The eluted Zr, Ti, and Al amounts were below the detection limits, whereas the total Si and Zn elution amounts over two weeks were 0.019 and 0.695 ppm, respectively. For both L929 and MC3T3-E1, the cell numbers increased over time on ZR, ZR-Ti, ZR-Al, and ZR-Si. Particularly, cell proliferation in ZR-Ti exceeded that in the other samples. These results suggest that ALD application to zirconia, particularly for TiO2 deposition, could be a new surface modification procedure for zirconia dental implants.

Abstract
Polydopamine-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer is a biocompatible coating with cell adhesion promotion and antibiofilm properties. This copolymer has been successfully applied on metallic implants, such as stainless steel and titanium implants, using several deposition techniques (e.g. layer-by-layer, silane activation, chemical vapor deposition, or liquid-assisted plasma polymerization). However, its application in zirconia ceramic materials, which are widely used in dentistry and medicine, has never been described. In this work, polydopamine-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer has been deposited on ultra-smooth surfaces of yttria-stabilized zirconia discs (average roughness = 2.08 ± 0.08 nm) by using liquid-assisted atmospheric-pressure plasma-induced polymerization (LA-APPiP). After the polymerization, the nanometric coating (250 nm, measured by ellipsometry) had an average roughness of 79.85 ± 13.71 nm and water contact angle of 57.8 ± 2.2 degrees, consistent with the highly hydrophilic nature of the biocompatible copolymer, if compared to the pristine zirconia (72.7 ± 2.0 degrees). The successful covalent bonding of the copolymer with the zirconia surface, thanks to the previous activation of the substrate with oxygen plasma, was proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The polymer composition has been investigated by XPS and Raman spectroscopies. The LA-APPiP technique has been proved to be an excellent method to produce homogenous films without the need to employ solvents and further purification steps. The new copolymer film allows the uniform growth of human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells, after 7 days of cell culture, as observed by fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract
Dental implants are frequently used to support fixed or removable dental prostheses to replace missing teeth. The clinical success of titanium dental implants is owed to the exceptional biocompatibility and osseointegration with the bone. Therefore, the enhanced therapeutic effectiveness of dental implants had always been preferred. Several concepts for implant coating and local drug delivery had been developed during the last decades. A drug is generally released by diffusion-controlled, solvent-controlled, and chemical controlled methods. Although a range of surface modifications and coatings (antimicrobial, bioactive, therapeutic drugs) have been explored for dental implants, it is still a long way from designing sophisticated therapeutic implant surfaces to achieve the specific needs of dental patients. The present article reviews various interdisciplinary aspects of surface coatings on dental implants from the perspectives of biomaterials, coatings, drug release, and related therapeutic effects. Additionally, the various types of implant coatings, localized drug release from coatings, and how released agents influence the bone–implant surface interface characteristics are discussed. This paper also highlights several strategies for local drug delivery and their limitations in dental implant coatings as some of these concepts are yet to be applied in clinical settings due to the specific requirements of individual patients.

Abstract
Objectives Bone density, surgical protocol, and implant design are the major determinants of primary stability. The goal of this animal trial was to investigate potential correlations of intraoperative bone density testing with clinical and histologic parameters of primary implant stability. Material and methods Following extractions of all mandibular premolars and subsequent healing, four implants each were placed in a total of four minipigs. Bone density was determined by applying intraoperative compressive tests using a device named BoneProbe whereas measurements of implant insertion torque and resonance frequency analysis were used for evaluating implant stability. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone to implant contact were quantified after harvesting mandibular block sections. Spearman rank correlation tests were performed for evaluating correlations (α = .05). Results Due to variation in clinical measurements, only weak correlations could be identified. A positive correlation was found between the parameters bone to implant contact and BMD (Spearman's rho .53; p = .05) whereas an inverse correlation was observed between BMD and implant stability (Spearman's rho -.61; p = .03). Both BoneProbe measurements in the cortical and trabecular area positively correlated with implant insertion torque (Spearman's rho 0.60; p = .02). A slightly stronger correlation was observed between the average of both BoneProbe measurements and implant insertion torque (Spearman's rho.66; p = .01). Conclusions While establishing exact relationships among parameters of implant stability and the measurement techniques applied would require greater sample size, intraoperative compressive testing of bone might, despite the weak correlations seen here, be a useful tool for predicting primary implant stability.
