Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices, and Awareness Levels Among Indian Postmenopausal Women About Osteoporosis and Its Relationship With Sociodemographic Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study From Northern India

Background Osteoporosis is a silent disease and can be prevented by providing correct and appropriate information to the individuals at risk. Therefore, we aim to find out the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of postmenopausal women, the highest-risk group. Methods Between May 2021 and December 2023, a cross-sectional study was done in the Military Hospital in Ambala, India, in 1326 postmenopausal women of age between 45 and 70 years who visited the outpatient department of orthopedics and who previously had a measure of bone mineral density (BMD) or estimation of BMD. All patients participating in the study received a questionnaire that assessed the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to osteoporosis. The Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT) was used to assess these parameters. Results The mean age was 60±3.1 years. The mean score for osteoporosis awareness was 6/20 points. A total of 983 (73.13%) had no knowledge about osteoporosis, and 221 (16.66%) had higher knowledge. Knowledge about osteoporosis was low with a mean knowledge score of 7.44±3.16 and a median of 7.2. It was found that those who graduated had some knowledge regarding osteoporosis with the help of either a hospital staff or a family member who had a history of osteoporosis. Conclusions Even among postmenopausal women who know they are at risk and should have BMD, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about osteoporosis were found to be quite low. In addition, education and mass communications are needed to increase awareness among women of this age about improving bone health.

Physical activity and lifestyle effects on bone mineral density among young adults: sociodemographic and biochemical analysis

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to assess the possible role of physical activities, calcium consumption and lifestyle factors in both bone mineral density and bone metabolism indices in 350 young adult volunteers. [Subjects and Methods] All volunteers were recruited for the assessment of lifestyle behaviors and physical activity traits using validated questioners, and bone mineral density (BMD), serum osteocalcin (s-OC), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and calcium were estimated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry analysis, and immunoassay techniques. [Results] Male participants showed a significant increase in BMD along with an increase in bone metabolism markers compared with females in all groups. However, younger subjects showed a significant increase in BMD, OC, BAP, and calcium compared with older subjects. Osteoporosis was more common in older subjects linked with abnormal body mass index and waist circumference. Bone metabolism markers correlated positively with BMD, physically activity and negatively with osteoporosis in all stages. Also, moderate to higher calcium and milk intake correlated positively with higher BMD. However, low calcium and milk intake along with higher caffeine, and carbonated beverage consumption, and heavy cigarette smoking showed a negative effect on the status of bone mineral density. Stepwise regression analysis showed that life style factors including physical activity and demographic parameters explained around 58-69.8% of the bone mineral density variation in young adults especially females. [Conclusion] body mass index, physical activity, low calcium consumption, and abnormal lifestyle have role in bone mineral density and prognosis of osteoporosis in young adults.

Analysis of changes in pulmonary functions at rest following humidity changes

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of humidity changes on the values of pulmonary function at rest. [Subjects and Methods] This study was conducted with 30 young adults (9 males, 21 females; mean age 19.4 years). Participants' mean height was 165.1 cm, and their mean weight was 60.2 kg. The experimental setting was a laboratory in which temperature was fixed at 25 °C. Using a humidifier, relative humidity was successively to adjusted 25%, 50%, and 90%, and pulmonary were measured functions at each level. Using a spirometer, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), expiratory reserve volume (ERV), and tidal volume (TV) were measured, and the results were compared and analyzed. [Results] Controlling for temperature, FVC and FEV1 showed statistically significant differences among different levels of relative humidity, but FEV1/FVC, TV, and ERV showed no significant difference. [Conclusion] In the case of exercises that require large respiration volumes, such as aerobic exercises or exercise load tests, it is recommended that higher than normal humidity levels should be maintained.
