The effect of lower back and lower-extremity kinesiology taping on static balance and physical function performance in people with multiple sclerosis: A pilot study

INTRODUCTION

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can lead to numerous deficits in body functions, including balance and mobility impairment. This study examined the effect of lower back and lower extremity kinesiology tape (KT) application on static balance and physical functioning performance in people with MS (pwMS) and compared that to a non-elastic tape.

METHODS

This pilot randomized study recruited and enrolled 10 participants with MS that were allocated into two groups: kinesio (n = 6) and non-elastic (n = 4) tape. Participants were assessed with and without the respective tape on static balance with eyes open and closed and various physical function tests.

RESULTS

Effect sizes for the Kinesio tape intervention were found to be small, while effect sizes for the sham tape/place condition varied from small to high. For both groups, the tendency was to reduce or maintain performance on the tests comparing tape and no tape. A subsequent, mixed-factor ANOVA revealed no significant difference between KT or sham tape/placebo.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that KT applied on lower back and lower extremity muscles does not seem to improve static balance and physical function performance in pwMS.

Effects of talus stabilization taping versus ankle kinesio taping in patients with chronic stroke: a randomized controlled trial

Talus stabilization taping (TST) can be utilized to stabilize posteriorly glide of the talus and allows active ankle dorsiflexion movement during walking. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of ankle kinesio taping with those of TST on ankle dorsiflexion passive range of motion, static balance, the Timed Up and Go test, and the fall risk in patients with chronic stroke and limited ankle dorsiflexion. Participants were randomized into the kinesio taping (n=11) and TST groups (n=11). Both groups were applied the appropriate taping and were asked to walk on the treadmill for 10 min. The ankle dorsiflexion passive range of motion, static balance ability, Timed Up and Go test, and fall risk were assessed in all participants before and after the intervention. The TST group showed greater improvement than the ankle kinesio taping group in all outcomes measured (P<0.05). Furthermore, both groups had significantly decreased in the Timed Up and Go results (P<0.05). This study shows that TST improves functional ability of the ankles of patients with chronic stroke in comparison to the kinesio taping method.

Effects of magnetic field therapy after taping application on pain and function of patients with knee osteoarthritis

[Purpose] The purpose of study was to investigate the effect of taping applied before magnetic field therapy. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty patients who diagnosed with knee arthritis by a specialist in the rehabilitation department were divided into three groups using the random allocation method. The control group received 15 min general physiotherapy. For the experimental group 1, non-elastic taping was applied to the medial side of the knee after general physiotherapy, followed by a 15 min magnetic field therapy. For the experimental group 2, elastic taping was applied to the medial side of the knee after general physiotherapy, followed by a 15 min magnetic field therapy. This study used visual analog scale to evaluate pain. This study used Western Ontario and McMaster Universities to evaluate the knee function. [Results] Experimental group 1 and experimental group 2 showed a significant difference visual analog scale and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities from the control group. However, no significant difference was observed between experimental group 1 and experimental group 2. [Conclusion] Choosing the applicable taping method according to the condition of the patients and applying it to therapy is necessary to reduce pain and improve the function of the patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Efeitos do uso do Kinesio® Taping na marcha de indivíduos pós-acidente vascular encefálico: uma revisão sistemática com metanálise

RESUMO O Kinesio® Taping (KT) vem sendo utilizado na reabilitação de pacientes pós-acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) e vários estudos recentes têm investigado seus efeitos na marcha destes indivíduos, reportando resultados promissores. Investigou-se, por meio de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, os efeitos do uso do KT na marcha de indivíduos pós-AVE. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, LILACS e PEDro, sem restrição de data ou idioma de publicação. Os artigos foram selecionados de forma independente por dois avaliadores e discordâncias foram resolvidas por um terceiro. A qualidade metodológica foi avaliada de acordo com a escala PEDro. Quando possível, as medidas de desfecho foram analisadas utilizando o programa Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, Versão 3.0. Foram incluídos quinze estudos de qualidade metodológica baixa a moderada (média de 4,7). Para velocidade de marcha, foram incluídos na metanálise sete estudos de qualidade metodológica baixa a moderada que, sob o modelo de efeitos fixos, encontrou que o KT aumentou significativamente a velocidade de marcha dos indivíduos pós-AVE em 0,05 m/s (95% IC 0,002 a 0,100; I2 = 0%; p<0.05). No entanto, para o comprimento do passo, mobilidade funcional e equilíbrio não houve diferença significativa (p>0,05). Esta revisão sistemática da literatura demonstrou que ainda não existem evidências sobre o uso do KT na reabilitação de pacientes pós-AVE com o objetivo de melhorar a marcha. Embora a velocidade de marcha, segundo a metanálise, tenha apresentado um ganho estatisticamente significativo, seu valor não pode ser considerado clinicamente relevante para os pacientes.

Post-stroke depression inhibits improvement in activities of daily living in patients in a convalescent rehabilitation ward

[Purpose] There have been no investigations into the improvement of activities of daily living among patients suffering from post-stroke depression on admission to convalescent rehabilitation wards in Japan. This study aimed to assess the improvement of activities in daily living in patients with or without post-stroke depression at the time of admission to a convalescent rehabilitation ward. [Subjects and Methods] This retrospective study included 108 stroke patients divided into two groups according to their Geriatric Depression Scale 15-item short form scores. Activities of daily living were assessed using the Functional Independence Measure. The degree of improvement on the Functional Independence Measure was defined as the difference between scores on admission and at discharge. [Results] The Functional Independence Measure gain score was significantly different from the Functional Independence Measure total score. There was a significant interaction between time period and post-stroke depression factors for the Functional Independence Measure total score. A multiple regression analysis revealed a significant association between Geriatric Depression Scale score and Functional Independence Measure total score. [Conclusion] The present study suggests that post-stroke depression has a negative impact on recovery of activities of daily living and on rehabilitation outcomes in a convalescent rehabilitation ward setting.
