Is skin pressure in load carriage over-evaluated?

Skin pressure is a biomechanical measure widely used in the assessment of load carriage systems. However, because of the complicated contour of human body, the stiffness of the pressure sensor array, and the large range of measurable pressures, there is much variability in previously reported results. In this paper, a simple mechanical model for load carriage was proposed, and the skin pressures beneath the shoulder and hip straps were predicted from the strap forces based on Laplace's law. The proposed model was used to analyze data from literature with an aim to check the reliability of existing pressure measurements. The static and dynamic pressures at five locations on eight subjects wearing a backpack with a 10 kg load, while standing and walking on a treadmill, were measured respectively using pressure sensors of the air pack type. The combination of literature data analysis and experimental testing proved that the existing measurement method of interface pressure in load carriage systems often leads to over-estimation and this might misguide the pressure criteria set for load carriage system usage and design. The proposed model will be useful for quick prediction of the interface pressure in load carriage systems.

Review of Measuring Microenvironmental Changes at the Body-Seat Interface and the Relationship between Object Measurement and Subjective Evaluation

Being seated has increasingly pervaded both working and leisure lifestyles, with development of more comfortable seating surfaces dependent on feedback from subjective questionnaires and design aesthetics. As a consequence, research has become focused on how to objectively resolve factors that might underpin comfort and discomfort. This review summarizes objective methods of measuring the microenvironmental changes at the body–seat interface and examines the relationship between objective measurement and subjective sensation. From the perspective of physical parameters, pressure detection accounted for nearly two thirds (37/54) of the publications, followed by microclimatic information (temperature and relative humidity: 18/54): it is to be noted that one article included both microclimate and pressure measurements and was placed into both categories. In fact, accumulated temperature and relative humidity at the body–seat interface have similarly negative effects on prolonged sitting to that of unrelieved pressure. Another interesting finding was the correlation between objective measurement and subjective evaluation; however, the validity of this may be called into question because of the differences in experiment design between studies.

Effects of a dynamic chair on pelvic mobility, fatigue, and work efficiency during work performed while sitting: a comparison of dynamic sitting and static sitting

[Purpose] Working while sitting for long periods can cause lumbar pain, fatigue, and reduced work efficiency. How a dynamic chair with a seat that moves three-dimensionally affects pelvic mobility before and after work, work efficiency, and post-work fatigue were examined. [Subjects and Methods] Subjects were 17 healthy adults (10 males, 7 females, mean age 21.8 ± 2.7 years). Subjects performed a 30-min Kraepelin test under two conditions: sitting in a standard office chair and sitting in a dynamic sitting balance chair. Root mean square (RMS) values of pelvic movement measured by a triaxial accelerometer during 30 minutes of work, finger-floor distance before and after work, lumbar fatigue, and pelvic movement RMS values during finger-floor distance measurement were used as outcome measures. [Results] Pelvic movement RMS values collected every 5 minutes during 30 minutes of work were significantly higher while sitting in the dynamic balance chair. Changes in pelvic movement RMS values during finger-floor distance measurement after work and amount of work performed during 30 minutes were significantly higher and lumbar fatigue was significantly lower for the dynamic balance chair. [Conclusion] Dynamic sitting maintained or increased pelvic flexibility. The dynamic balance chair may effectively help workers work continuously in seated postures with little fatigue.

A preliminary study of the measurement of external ischial tuberosity width and its gender differences

[Purpose] Using two measurement methods, this study measured the external ischial tuberosity widths (EITW) of both males and females and investigated gender differences in these EITW values. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen male and 15 female Taiwanese were recruited for this study. Their EITWs were measured using the impress and the seated pressure methods, and compared. [Results] The results show that the EITW values obtained using the impress method were similar to those reported by previous studies, but gender differences were observed in the measurements when that method was used (male: 11.96 cm; female: 13.53 cm). However, the males had non-significantly greater EITW values than the females when the seated pressure method was used (male: 13.42 cm; female: 13.30 cm), and this was probably due to the distinct characteristics of the buttocks of the two sexes and the seated pressure method. [Conclusion] The authors of this study propose that 12.0 and 13.5 cm are respectively the ideal design parameters for male and female EITWs in Taiwan, although13.5 cm might be more appropriate for male EITWs in the design of relatively hard seat or saddle surfaces.
