Correlation between waist and mid-thigh circumference and cardiovascular fitness in Korean college students: a case study

Background

Assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a standard procedure in routine clinical practices. Early identification of risk factors through screening is vital in the fight against chronic diseases. Evaluation of CRF can impose cost implications in the clinical setting; thus, a simple and easy-to-use test is to be advocated. The Ruffier test is a simple test that can assess CRF, and it is necessary to find whether the test reflects the effects of compounding factors in CRF.

Objective

This study aims to determine the association between CRF (estimated VO2max) with cardiovascular, anthropometric, and physical risk factors using the Ruffier test.

Methods

A cross-sectional study with a sample of 52 male participants was conducted. Before the Ruffier test, each participant's body weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thickness, thigh length, lower-limb length, thigh circumference, physical activity, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and pulmonary functions were recorded, and these factors correlated with CRF.

Results

There was a significant inverse relationship found between the estimated VO2max and age, height, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, a sum of skinfold, fat percentage, thigh length, lower-limb length, thigh circumference, smoking, blood pressure, heart rates, and diabetes (p < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was found between the estimated VO2max with physical activity and respiratory functions (p < 0.05). In the multivariable model, body weight and resting heart rate were significantly inversely associated with the estimated VO2max(p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Using the Ruffier test, various risk factors of CRF are correlated with the estimated VO2max. This test reflects the effects of different compounding factors on CRF; therefore, it can be used in routine clinical practices to identify the risk factors early.

A relação pescoço-coxa (RPCx) pode servir como índice antropométrico para diagnosticar a síndrome metabólica?

Resumo Objetivo: Investigar a Relação Pescoço-Coxa (RPCx) como índice antropométrico para diagnosticar a Síndrome Metabólica em estudantes universitários brasileiros. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 691 adultos (> 18 anos) de ambos os sexos. Foram investigados os seguintes parâmetros antropométricos: circumferência abdominal, circumferência de pescoço, circumferência de coxa, índice de massa corporal e RPCx. Além disso, foram coletados dados laboratoriais, tais como: triglicérides, glicemia e colesterol HDL. Resultados: Foram encontrados valores de circumferência abdominal (83,59 ± 10,68 cm), de pescoço (37,29 ± 2,36 cm), coxa (52,37 ± 5,71 cm) e relação de pescoço-coxa (0,72 ± 0,07 cm) superiores entre os homens (p <0,001). Ao analisar os componentes da síndrome, a RPCx mostrou uma correlação linear positiva estatisticamente significante com todos. Conclusão: Nesta pesquisa foi demonstrado que a RPCx não serve como critério diagnóstico da SM, mas indica alterações nos componentes constituintes da síndrome.

Cardiorespiratory fitness and its association with adiposity indices in young adults

Objective:

This study investigated the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and adiposity in young adults.

Methods:

Data was collected from 133 students of a medical college of Pakistan. The study was conducted on young adults, aged 17-24 years, recruited from Jinnah Medical & Dental College, Karachi, between Aug-Dec, 2015. Queen’s College Step Test was conducted to measure CRF and maximal oxygen uptake (VO_2max) evaluated. Anthropometric measurements (body mass index, body fat, visceral fat, waist circumference) were taken to assess adiposity. Associations of VO_2max and adiposity were analyzed.

Results:

The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 44% overall. The VO_2max (ml/kg/min) of males and females was 55.41±9.45 and 39.91±3.14, respectively, the gender difference being highly significant (p<0.001). Quartiles of VO_2max showed strong inverse relationship between adiposity and VO_2max, obese individuals having low VO_2max (1^st quartile) and normal weight individuals having high VO_2max (4^th quartile). VO2max correlated greatest with body fat in males (r = –0.600; p<0.001), and waist circumference in females (r = –0.319; p=0.004).

Conclusion:

The results indicate low CRF in young females and a strong inverse relationship between fitness levels and adiposity in young adults of both genders. Improving these parameters in our young population may prevent development of chronic non-communicable disease in later life.

The relationships of waist and mid-thigh circumference with performance of college golfers

[Purpose] Our aim was to evaluate the relationships between waist and mid-thigh circumference, used as proxy measures of trunk and lower limb strengths, respectively, and selected parameters of driver and putting performance in Korean college golfers. [Subjects and Methods] The participants were 103 college golfers (81 male, 20 to 27 years old). Measurements of body composition, waist and mid-thigh circumference, and grip strength, as well as assessment of golf performance, including driver distance, driver swing speed, putting accuracy, and putting consistency, were performed at the golf performance laboratory at Konkuk University in Chungju-si, Republic of Korea. Average round score was obtained from 10 rounds of golf completed during the study period. The relationships between strength measures and golf performance were evaluated by partial correlation analysis, with adjustment for age, golf experience, and body mass index. [Results] Waist circumference did not correlate with any of the performance variables in both males and females. Mid-thigh circumference correlated with putting consistency (r = 0.364) in males and with putting consistency (r = 0.490) and accuracy (r = 0.547) in females. No other significant correlations between waist and mid-thigh circumference and golf performance were identified. [Conclusion] Lower limb strength may be an important component of putting performance. Further studies are needed to fully characterize the contributions of trunk strength to performance.

Effects of treadmill exercise on skeletal muscle mTOR signaling pathway in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of regular treadmill exercise on skeletal muscle Rictor-Akt and mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 signaling pathway in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. [Subjects and Methods] Four- week-old C57BL/6 mice were adopted and classified into normal diet group (ND, n = 10), normal diet and training group (NDT, n = 10), high-fat diet group (HF, n = 10), and high-fat diet and training group (HFT, n = 10). The exercise program consisted of a treadmill exercise provided at low intensity for 1–4 weeks, and moderate intensity for 5–8 weeks. [Results] The Western blot method was used to measure the expression of mTOR, Raptor, S6K1, Rictor, and Akt proteins in the soleus muscle. mTOR levels were significantly higher in the HF group than in the ND and NDT groups. Raptor/mTORC1 and S6K1 levels were significantly higher in the HF group than in all the other groups. Akt levels were significantly lower in the HF group than in the NDT group. The risk of obesity may be associated with the overactivation of the mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 signaling pathway and a decrease in Akt levels. [Conclusion] This study also indicates that performing aerobic exercise may be associated with the downregulation of the mTOR-Raptor-S6K1 pathway.
