Effects of proprioceptive sense-based Kinesio taping on walking imbalance

The Acute Effects of Kinesio Taping on Drooling in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial

INTRODUCTION

This study purpose of determining the short-term effects of kinesio taping on drooling in children with cerebral palsy (CP).

METHODS

CP were randomly divided into 3 groups as the kinesio tape (n = 16), sham tape (n = 16), and control (n = 16) groups. The drooling severity and frequency were assessed with the Drooling Severity and Frequency Scale, and the amount of saliva was measured by the 5-minute drooling quotient. All outcome measurements were repeated for all children at the baseline, after 45 minutes, and after 2 days of application.

RESULTS

There was a significant decrease found in drooling severity, frequency, and amount in the kinesio taping group (p < .05). There was no significant difference in the sham taping and control groups (p > .05).

CONCLUSION

The use of kinesio tape in drooling reduced drooling severity, frequency, and amount.

Influence of taping on joint proprioception: a systematic review with between and within group meta-analysis

Taping is increasingly used to manage proprioceptive deficits, but existing reviews on its impact have shortcomings. To accurately assess the effects of taping, a separate meta-analyses for different population groups and tape types is needed. Therefore, both between- and within-group meta-analyses are needed to evaluate the influence of taping on proprioception. According to PRISMA guidelines, a literature search was conducted across seven databases (Web of Science, PEDro, Pubmed, EBSCO, Scopus, ERIC, SportDiscus, Psychinfo) and one register (CENTRAL) using the keywords "tape" and "proprioception". Out of 1372 records, 91 studies, involving 2718 individuals, met the inclusion criteria outlined in the systematic review. The meta-analyses revealed a significant between and within-group reduction in repositioning errors with taping compared to no tape (Hedge's g: -0.39, p < 0.001) and placebo taping (Hedge's g: -1.20, p < 0.001). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses further confirmed the reliability of the overall between and within-group analyses. The between-group results further demonstrated that both elastic tape and rigid tape had similar efficacy to improve repositioning errors in both healthy and fatigued populations. Additional analyses on the threshold to detection of passive motion and active movement extent discrimination apparatus revealed no significant influence of taping. In conclusion, the findings highlight the potential of taping to enhance joint repositioning accuracy compared to no tape or placebo taping. Further research needs to uncover underlying mechanisms and refine the application of taping for diverse populations with proprioceptive deficits.

The effect of lower back and lower-extremity kinesiology taping on static balance and physical function performance in people with multiple sclerosis: A pilot study

INTRODUCTION

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can lead to numerous deficits in body functions, including balance and mobility impairment. This study examined the effect of lower back and lower extremity kinesiology tape (KT) application on static balance and physical functioning performance in people with MS (pwMS) and compared that to a non-elastic tape.

METHODS

This pilot randomized study recruited and enrolled 10 participants with MS that were allocated into two groups: kinesio (n = 6) and non-elastic (n = 4) tape. Participants were assessed with and without the respective tape on static balance with eyes open and closed and various physical function tests.

RESULTS

Effect sizes for the Kinesio tape intervention were found to be small, while effect sizes for the sham tape/place condition varied from small to high. For both groups, the tendency was to reduce or maintain performance on the tests comparing tape and no tape. A subsequent, mixed-factor ANOVA revealed no significant difference between KT or sham tape/placebo.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that KT applied on lower back and lower extremity muscles does not seem to improve static balance and physical function performance in pwMS.

Effects of elastic kinesiology taping on shoulder proprioception: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Shoulder injuries are associated with proprioceptive deficits. Elastic kinesiology tape (KT) is used for treating musculoskeletal disorders, including shoulder injuries, as it arguably improves proprioception.

OBJECTIVE

To synthesize the evidence on the effects of elastic KT on proprioception in healthy and pathological shoulders.

METHODS

Four databases (PubMed, WoS, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus) were searched for studies that investigated the effects of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception. Outcome measures were active joint position sense (AJPS), passive joint position sense (PJPS), kinesthesia, sense of force (SoF), and sense of velocity (SoV). Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration RoB tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and the ROBINS-1 for non-RCTs, while the certainty of evidence was determined using GRADE.

RESULTS

Eight studies (5 RCTs, 3 non-RCTs) were included, yielding 187 shoulders (102 healthy and 85 pathological shoulders). RoB ranged from low (2 studies), moderate (5 studies), to high (1 study). Elastic KT has a mixed effect on AJPS of healthy shoulders (n=79) (low certainty). Elastic KT improves AJPS (subacromial pain syndrome and rotator cuff tendinopathy, n=52) and PJPS (chronic hemiparetic shoulders, n=13) among pathological shoulders (very low certainty). Elastic KT has no effect on kinesthesia among individuals with subacromial pain syndrome (n=30) (very low certainty).

CONCLUSION

There is very low to low certainty of evidence that elastic KT enhances shoulder AJPS and PJPS. The aggregate of evidence is currently so low that any recommendation on the effectiveness of elastic KT on shoulder proprioception remains speculative.

Effects of kinesio taping therapy on gait and surface electromyography in stroke patients with hemiplegia

Background: The application of Kinesio Taping (KT) on the lower extremity of stroke patients can improve the quality of somatosensory information by activating lower extremity muscles involved in postural control. Gait analysis and surface electromyography (SEMG) are valuable in assessing the motor ability of the lower extremities.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of KT therapy on gait and SEMG in stroke patients with hemiplegia.

Methods: Twenty-one stroke patients were included in the study. KT was applied to the lower extremities of the hemiplegic side. Quantitative gait parameters were measured by a gait analysis system (IDEEA, by MiniSun, United States) and activation of the lower extremity muscles were evaluated by the SEMG (Trigno™ Wireless Systems, Delsys Inc., United States) before and after taping. Step length, stride length, pulling acceleration, swing power, ground impact, and energy expenditure were used to evaluate when patients walk as usual. SEMG signals were collected from the anterior bilateral tibialis (TA) and the lateral gastrocnemius (LG). The root mean square (RMS) value was used to assess muscle activity. SEMG signals were examined before and after KT treatment in three different locomotor conditions of the patients: walking at a natural speed, walking with a weight of 5 kg, dual-tasking walking (walking + calculation task) while carrying a weight of 5 kg. The calculation task was to ask the patients to calculate the result of subtracting 7 from 100 and continuing to subtract 7 from the resulting numbers. Comparisons between two normally distributed samples (before and after KT treatment) were evaluated using the two-tailed, paired Student’s t-test.

Results: Stride length (0.89 ± 0.19 vs. 0.96 ± 0.23; p = 0.029), pulling acceleration (0.40 ± 0.21 vs. 1.11 ± 0.74; p = 0.005), and swing power (0.42 ± 0.24 vs. 1.14 ± 0.72; p = 0.004) improved in the hemiplegia side after KT treatment. The RMS value of TA SEMG signals in the limbs on the hemiplegia side decreased after KT treatment during dual-tasking walking carrying a weight of 5 kg (3.65 ± 1.31 vs. 2.93 ± 0.95; p = 0.030).

Conclusion: KT treatment is effective in altering gait and SEMG characteristics in stroke patients with hemiplegia.

The effects of experimentally-induced fatigue on gait parameters during obstacle crossing: A systematic review

Striking an obstacle while walking can be dangerous, reflecting the higher risks of losing one's balance, tripping and falling. Particular situations during which internal resources are limited, such as in a fatigued state, may impair performance when crossing obstacles, enhancing the risks of falls or accidents. Our goal was thus to review the effects of experimentally-induced fatigue (EIF) on gait parameters during obstacle crossing by healthy individuals. We systematically searched PubMed and Web of Science databases using 'fatigue', 'obstacle crossing' and their equivalent terms to extract data from studies investigating this domain. Nine studies were found. First, EIF-related effects on kinetics, EMG and obstacle contacts have been poorly studied. Second, consistent and inconsistent results were found in the kinematic outcomes after EIF. Consistent results included reductions in stride duration and increased step width. Inconsistent results included gait velocity (no-effect vs increased), leading and trailing-foot vertical clearance (reduced vs increased) and horizontal distance from foot to the obstacle before obstacle avoidance (no-effect vs increased). These findings should be interpreted cautiously, however, due to the heterogeneity of the obstacle crossing and EIF protocols.

Immediate Effect of Lower-Leg Kinesio Taping on Ankle Dorsiflexion and Gait Parameters in Chronic Stroke with Foot Drop

OBJECTIVE

Kinesio taping (KT) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are interventions mainly used in clinical settings to improve gait after stroke. Lower-leg KT using the concept of PNF (PNF-KT) has been shown to enhance the recovery of gait speed in patients with stroke. But, the effect of PNF-KT on the ankle movement and gait parameters in stroke patients is unclear. We aimed to investigate the immediate effects of PNF-KT on ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DF-ROM) and gait parameters in patients with stroke with foot drop.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

For the A-KT condition, tape was attached to the gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscles, and tape for eversion was attached. In the PNF-KT condition, tape was attached to the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis and digitorum muscles. Ankle movement was measured as the ankle DF-ROM using an iSEN system. Gait ability was assessed using the GAITRite system. The measured gait variables were gait velocity, cadence, and step length (both sides).

RESULTS

A-KT and PNF-KT significantly improved the ankle DF-ROM, gait velocity, cadence, and the affected- and unaffected-side step length compared to that with no taping. Moreover, PNF-KT significantly increased the ankle DF-ROM, gait velocity, cadence, and the affected- and unaffected-side step length compared to that with A-KT.

CONCLUSIONS

PNF-KT applied to the affect side improved ankle DF-ROM and gait parameters in hemiplegic stroke patients than no taping, A-KT. Lower-leg PNF-KT may be a useful intervention in a rehabilitation program to improve ankle DF-ROM and gait parameters in chronic stroke patients with foot drop in clinical settings.

Current Evidence Does Support the Use of KT to Treat Chronic Knee Pain in Short Term: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective

To demonstrate whether KT is better than placebo taping, nonelastic taping, or no taping in reducing pain.

Methods

PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were systematically searched up to 20 October 2020 for randomized controlled studies that used KT to treat chronic knee pain according to PRISMA guidelines. We extracted the mean differences and SD in pretreatment and posttreatment for selected outcomes measured in the experimental and control groups for subsequent meta-analyses.

Results

In total, 8 studies involving 416 participants fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Our results indicated that KT is better than other tapings (placebo taping or nonelastic taping) in the early four weeks. The mean difference was −1.44 (95% CI: −2.04–−0.84, I² = 49%, P ≤ 0.01). Treatment methods which were performed for more than six weeks (0.16 (95% CI: −0.35–0.68, I² = 0%, P=0.53)) show no significant difference in reducing pain. In studies in which visual analogue scale was measured, a positive effect was observed for KT combined with exercise program training (−3.27 (95% CI: −3.69–2.85, I² = 0%, P < 0.05)).

Conclusion

KT exhibited significant but temporary pain reduction.

The clinical effect of Kinesio taping and modified constraint-induced movement therapy on upper extremity function and spasticity in patients with stroke: a randomized controlled pilot study

BACKGROUND

Spasticity and impaired hand function are common complication in patients with stroke, and it pose negative impact on quality of life.

AIM

We aimed to assess the effect of the combined administration of kinesio taping (KT) and modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) on upper extremity function and spasticity in hemiplegic patients with stroke.

DESIGN

A randomized controlled pilot study.

SETTING

A hospital center.

POPULATION

Patient of stroke with hemiplegia for 3-12 months.

METHODS

Thirty-five patients were enrolled and allocated into three groups, including the sham KT and mCIMT group, KT group, or KT and mCIMT group. The KT, sham KT, and mCIMT serve as additional therapies (5 days/week for 3 weeks) besides regular rehabilitation (5 days/week for 6 weeks). KT was applied over the dorsal side of the affected hand, while mCIMT was applied to restrain the unaffected upper extremity. The outcomes included the modified Tardieu scale (mTS), Brunnstrom stage, Box and Block Test (BBT), Fugl-Meyer assessment for the upper extremity (FMA-UE), and Stroke Impact Scale version 3.0. Measurements were taken at baseline, immediately after intervention (third week), and 3 weeks later (sixth week).

RESULTS

Between baseline and the third week, within-group comparisons yielded significant improvement in the wrist and hand parts of the FMA and BBT of the Sham KT and mCIMT group (P=0.007-0.035); in the hand part of the FMA, BBT, and mTS degree (P=0.005-0.024) of the KT group; and in the Brunnstrom stage of the wrist, FMA-UE, BBT, and mTS degrees (P=0.005-0.032) of the KT and mCIMT group. Between baseline and the sixth week, there was significant difference in the proximal part of the FMA and mTS degree in groups with KT, but an additional improvement on the Brunnstrom stage of the wrist was noted in the KT and mCIMT group.

CONCLUSIONS

KT benefits patients with stroke in spasticity reduction and upper extremity function. The combination of KT and mCIMT provides extra benefit in motor performance with a more long-lasting effect.

CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT

Kinesio taping could act as potential adjuvant therapy in patient of stroke with hemiplegia.

Reduction of Knee Pain in a 45-Year-Old Woman After Pelvic Manipulation and Kinesiology Taping: A Case Report

Objective

The purpose of this case report is to describe the chiropractic management of a patient with knee pain stemming from pelvic imbalance.

Clinical Features

A female patient presented to a chiropractic clinic with ongoing anteromedial knee pain whenever she walks. The patient reported being unable to walk a half mile without her knee feeling like it would "give out."

Intervention and Outcome

The patient received 5 treatments focusing on the pelvic imbalance and reduced muscle strength discovered in the patient's initial evaluation. Chiropractic manipulation of the sacroiliac joint, kinesiology taping, and gluteus medius exercises were administered. The Verbal Rating Scale, muscle strength assessment, and orthopedic evaluation measured the patient's progress. After 5 treatments the Verbal Rating Scale went from 8 to 1 and gluteus medius strength scored 5 of 5.

Conclusion

The patient in this case reported resolution of her knee pain after 5 treatments over the course of 10 days. The patient reported no pain while walking nor while performing other activities of daily living. Although this is one case, correcting pelvic balance via conservative measures resolved the knee pain. Implementing therapy proximal to the complaint may be a viable option for patients with knee pain.

A Short Overview of the Effects of Kinesio Taping for Postural Spine Curvature Disorders

Spine curvature disorders are very common in the population. Several therapeutic methods have been implemented over time. Kinesio Taping (KT) is a solution that is utilized for several purposes. This narrative review aims to discuss KT methodology as a valid solution for spinal curvature disorders, especially for structured and non-structured spine deviations. The matter is poorly discussed in the current literature. Nevertheless, KT seems to indirectly influence posture and spine curvature disorders through peripheral and central nervous system stimulation, but further investigations are needed to demonstrate these unknown effects clearly. The present review provides a valuable contribution to the existing literature and may represent a starting point and a useful guide for further studies in this field of research.

[The application of kinesiotaping for the rehabilitation of the post-stroke patients]

This review of the scientific literature was designed to consider the prospects for the application of kinesiotaping for the rehabilitation of the post-stroke patients. The relevance of the work arises from the absence of a systemic analysis of the large number of investigations that have been carried out during the past two years. The objective of the present review article was to evaluate the influence of kinesiotaping on the health status of the post-stroke patients and the course of their rehabilitative treatment based on the results of analysis of the scientific reports published during the period from 2015 to 2017. The analysis has demonstrated that the method under consideration makes it possible to effectively reduce spasticity, increase the paretic limb power, improve the static and dynamic balance, and alleviate the pain syndrome by virtue of the ability to improve the articulation proprioception and to regulate the muscle tone. Such effects are known to promote the reduction of muscle tone asymmetry in the patients suffering from hemiparesis and articulation instability which in its turn improves the patients' gait and walking ability, hightens their living standards, and allows to tolerate enhanced physical exertion. Kinesiotaping actually improves the locomotor function in the post-stroke patients Taken together, the advantages of the approach in question give reason to recommend kinesiotaping for the wide application for the combined rehabilitative treatment of the post-stroke patients.
