Patients' knowledge about medication prescription in the emergency service

Medication Knowledge and Adherence in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Brunei Darussalam: A Pioneer Study in Brunei Darussalam

Aim: The present study measured the medication knowledge and medication adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes in Brunei Darussalam. Demographic details and diabetes knowledge were also evaluated. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted via the administration of a structured questionnaire consisting of 4 sections via a face-to-face interview. Results: A total of 118 participants were interviewed. A majority of the participants were aged 40 years or above (106, 89.8%). The mean number of total medications that the participants were taking was 7.36 ± 2.87 and the mean number of antidiabetic medications was 2.39 ± 1.06. As for the antidiabetic therapy, the largest proportion of the participants were taking oral antidiabetic medications only (87, 73.73%). In the diabetes knowledge section of the questionnaire, more than half of the participants (63, 53.34%) scored higher than the acquired mean score. Family history, education level, and total medications taken were significantly correlated with diabetes knowledge. However, in the medication knowledge section of the questionnaire, the mean score (3.37 ± 1.38) was below the intended score for good knowledge. Medication knowledge has been significantly associated with gender, family history and total medications taken. A majority of the participants reported non-adherence (74, 62.71%) due to various reasons. In this study, those of the Malay race were significantly correlated with adherence to their medication regimen. This study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between diabetes knowledge, medication knowledge and medication adherence. Conclusions: The present study provides insights in regard to patients with type 2 diabetes in Brunei Darussalam and their knowledge towards the disease as well as their medications. Despite the lack of significance between the variables, the rate of non-adherence is still alarming. Further studies are required to better understand the barriers to non-adherence in these patients.

Knowledge of prescribed drugs among primary care patients: findings from Prover Project

Background Evidence on patient medication knowledge and associated factors within primary care patients is limited, especially in developing countries. Objective To estimate the prevalence and investigate the role of individual and contextual factors on insufficient medication knowledge among primary care patients. Setting Public community pharmacies in a health pole city (234,937 inhab.) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Methods Exit-survey conducted with a representative sample of 1221 patients (≥ 18 years) interviewed after dispensing. Data collected for medicines included its name, therapeutic indication, dosage, time of administration, treatment duration, side effects and warnings. Information were compared to the prescription and official guidelines. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were applied. Main outcome measure Insufficient patient medication knowledge. Results Prevalence of insufficient medication knowledge was 30.1%. Side effects (96.3%) and warnings (71.1%) had the highest percentage of misses. Musculoskeletal system drugs presented the lowest knowledge score (mean = 5.9; SD = 1.9). Significant determinants of insufficient medication knowledge with respective odds ratio (OR) were: level of education (≤ 3 years, OR 1.50; 95% CI 1.06-2.11 and 4-7 years, OR 1.37; 95% CI 1.02-1.84), number of comorbidities (≤ 2, OR 1.36; 95% CI 1.04-1.77), use of prescription drugs in the last 15 days (no, OR 2.22; 95% CI 1.31-3.76) and number of people able to lend money (no person, OR 1.34; 95% CI 1.04-1.74). Conclusion Counselling and monitoring practices should be tailored to patients with less schooling, that are initiating treatment and with low disease burden. Equally important is the need to implement strategies to increase the patient's level of social capital to improve treatment knowledge.

Fall prevention in hospitalized patients: Evaluation through the nursing outcomes classification/NOC

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the nursing outcomes of hospitalized patients at high risk for falls through NOC and correlate NOC outcomes called Knowledge: Fall Prevention and Fall Prevention Behavior with patients' sociodemographic and clinical variables.

BACKGROUND

Falls represent one of the major safety incidents in the hospital setting. The role of nursing is fundamental in preventing these events, from risk assessment to outcome evaluation. One of the strategies for evaluating nursing outcomes is the use of Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC).

METHODS

A cross-sectional study conducted with a sample of 68 adult patients at high risk for falls admitted to clinical and surgical units. The patients received three evaluations. Data collect was prospective with an instrument containing five results and 28 NOC indicators. Descriptive and analytical analysis considered the NOC 5-point Likert scale.

RESULTS

Evaluation of the Knowledge: Fall Prevention and Fall Prevention Behavior outcomes showed that patients have a limited level of knowledge and rarely demonstrated preventive behavior. Vital Signs (0802), Medication Response (2301) and Safe Health Care Environment (1934) pointed to the existence of adequate patient monitoring and safe environment.

CONCLUSION

The evaluation of patient outcomes supported by a standardized classification system such as the NOC highlights the patient's clinical evolution and produces data that support the planning of care and management interventions, providing more effective and safer practices.
