Overweight in young adult students: the vulnerability of a distorted self-perception of body image

Distorted self-perception and dissatisfaction with body image among nursing students

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate distorted self-perception and dissatisfaction with body image among nursing students.

METHOD

Cross-sectional study with students from a public university. Self-perception and satisfaction with body image were assessed using the Figure Rating Scale and the Body Shape Questionnare (BSQ). Body Mass Index was calculated with self-reported weight and height. Analysis was processed in Stata 15.0 with a significance level of 5%.

RESULTS

A total of 93 students participated in the study. Results showed 87.1% of distorted self-perception, with a greater proportion of students who overestimated their body size (68.8%); 89.2% of students were dissatisfied with their body image according to the Figure Rating Scale, and 55.9% according to the BSQ. Dissatisfaction assessed by the BSQ was associated with biological sex, nutritional status, diets and bullying.

CONCLUSION

The results indicate the need to address the theme in the training of nurses, to help them accept their own bodies and to enable them to act effectively in their professional practice.

Intuitive eating and body appreciation in type 2 diabetes

Our objective was to explore the socio-demographic, clinical, and nutritional factors of body appreciation in type 2 diabetics. This is a cross-sectional observational study with 179 adults and older adults (60 ± 10 years old). Most of the sample was female (n = 133; 74.3%). Through logistic regression analysis, it was observed that being perceived as overweight was associated with a 91.6% lower chance of being satisfied with one's body. Trusting hunger and satiety cues doubled the chances of body satisfaction. Thus, eating more intuitively, attending to the signs of hunger and satiety, is associated with greater body satisfaction in type 2 diabetics.

O tema “imagem corporal” nas publicações do Scientific Electronic Library Online – SciELO: revisão integrativa

A imagem corporal é um tema que vem se ampliando nos últimos anos. Por isso, a partir de uma revisão integrativa da literatura efetuada na plataforma Scientific Eletronic Library Online, realizou-se uma pesquisa em 26 artigos publicados no ano de 2016, com o objetivo de identificar as principais características dos textos sobre imagem corporal. Os resultados apontam para três tipos de estudo predominantes: a) artigos de revisão; b) validação de instrumentos e protocolos e; c) análise dos níveis de satisfação/insatisfação com a imagem corporal de grupos distintos. A partir dessas informações, também foi possível concluir que são necessários novos estudos, sobretudo, vinculados às possíveis determinações sociais sobre a imagem corporal.
