Cannabis Use and Parenting Practices among Young People: The Impact of Parenting Styles, Parental Cannabis-Specific Rules, and Parental Cannabis Use

Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug. Its use typically starts in adolescence, and parents play a key role in young people’s cannabis use. Our study aimed to examine and compare the effects of parenting styles, parental cannabis-specific rules, and parental cannabis use on young people’s cannabis use. The research sample consisted of 839 students from various secondary education programs in Slovenia, aged 14 to 21. Associations between the young people’s lifetime cannabis use and their experience of parenting practices were assessed using logistic regression, with demographic, socioeconomic, educational, health, and risk behaviors controlled in a multivariate model. Maternal authoritative parenting (in comparison with permissive parenting), strict maternal, cannabis-specific rules, and parental cannabis non-use statistically significantly reduced the likelihood of young people’s cannabis use. Its strongest predictor was parental cannabis use, followed by the mother’s specific cannabis-use rules and maternal parenting style. The findings of our study can contribute to the development of public health policies to more effectively prevent cannabis use among adolescents and emerging adults, including by designing prevention programs aimed at strengthening parents’ general and cannabis-specific practices and competences.

The Role of Parental Involvement in Cigarette Smoking among Adolescents in Nepal

Limited studies have examined the role of a parent's involvement in their child's daily life as it relates to cigarette smoking among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We examined the role of parental involvement with current smoking among 6,105 adolescents using a nationally representative sample from the 2015- 2016 Global School-based Students Health Survey in Nepal. Using the adolescents' perceptions of daily parental involvement, a composite variable was created to include parents (a) checking to see if the child's homework was done, (b) understanding the child's problems and worries, and (c) knowing what the child was doing with their free time. Our analysis utilized a multiple logistic regression to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) accounting for significant covariates. Overall, an increase in parental involvement was associated with a 15% less (aOR = 0.86) likelihood of their child smoking. Additionally, being 15 years or older (aOR =1.55), being bullied (aOR =1.72), drinking alcohol (aOR =20.63), and having missed school without permission (aOR =2.29) were all associated with cigarette smoking. Further, girls were almost 70% less (aOR = 0.33) likely to be cigarette smokers than boys. Future longitudinal studies should examine parental involvement as a protective factor against cigarette smoking.

Measurement and Function of the Control Dimension in Parenting Styles: A Systematic Review

Recent studies have shown different results in identifying which parenting style is the most beneficial for children, which has encouraged certain authors to wonder whether parental control is still needed for optimal parenting. As such investigations have been conducted with different measuring instruments, it is necessary to check whether the use of different instruments leads to different results. In order to figure this out, a systematic review of the recent literature (Web of Science and Scopus, 2000–2017) was carried out. This review found that, using certain instruments, parental control is associated with better outcomes in children, while using certain others, control is associated with worse outcomes. The difference seems to be in the way of measuring parental control.

Alcohol and tobacco experimentation among adolescents of the Midwest Region/Brazil

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco experimentation among adolescents of the Brazilian Midwest its association with sociodemographic factors. This is a cross-sectional study, with data from the National School Health Survey - PeNSE, carried out in 2015. The sample consisted of ninth-graders. The dependent variable was alcohol and tobacco experimentation at some point in life. A Poisson regression model was performed to identify the associated variables. The weighted estimated prevalence of alcohol and tobacco experimentation was 57.17% (95% CI: 56.20-58.14) and 22.38% (95% CI: 21.56-23.20), respectively. The prevalence of alcohol experimentation among females was higher than in males. However, regarding tobacco, males had a higher prevalence than females. Alcohol and tobacco experimentation was statistically significant with age. Public schools' administrative dependency showed a 23.99% higher prevalence than private schools concerning tobacco experimentation. We concluded that alcohol and tobacco experimentation was high among school adolescents and was shown to be associated with sociodemographic factors .

Sociodemographic factors associated with smoking risk perception in adolescents in São Paulo, Brazil

Objective:

We examined the sociodemographic factors associated with smoking risk perceptions (SRP) in youth living in two very different neighborhoods in the city of São Paulo, Brazil: a middle-class central area (Vila Mariana) and a poor outer-city area (Capão Redondo).

Methods:

A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 180 public school-attending youth (all aged 12 years) and their parents. SRP was evaluated through self-reports. Weighted multinomial logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with SRP.

Results:

Smoking was considered a high-risk behavior by 70.9% of adolescents. There were significant differences in SRP associated with socioeconomic status (SES) and maternal smoking status. Having a non-smoking mother was positively associated with perceiving smoking as having low to moderate risk versus no risk (OR=3.91 [95%CI 1.27-12.02]). Attending school in Capão Redondo was associated with perceiving smoking as having high risk compared to no risk (OR=3.00 [95%CI 1.11-8.12]), and low SES was negatively associated with perceiving at least some risk in smoking versus perceiving no risk in this behavior.

Conclusions:

Youth whose mothers smoke appear to have lower SRP than those whose mothers do not smoke. Living in a poor outer-city area was associated with higher SRP.

Fatores associados ao tabagismo entre adolescentes do sexo feminino

RESUMO O objetivo foi conhecer os fatores associados ao tabagismo entre adolescentes do sexo feminino. Pesquisa descritiva, qualitativa, em duas escolas de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Participaram do estudo 75 adolescentes do sexo feminino. A análise de conteúdo foi utilizada com o suporte do software de apoio à análise qualitativa. O uso de tabaco foi associado ao controle do peso corporal, socialização no ambiente escolar, redução da ansiedade e estresse e pouca percepção de risco para a saúde. Ações de prevenção ao uso de tabaco no ambiente escolar devem ser planejadas considerando gênero, faixa etária, linguagem e modos de vida.

[Tobacco use in Brazilian school adolescents: association with mental health and family context]

OBJECTIVE

To study the association between aspects of mental health and the family context with tobacco experimentation and consumption among Brazilian schoolchildren.

METHOD

A cross-sectional study using data from the National Survey of Schoolchildren's Health in Brazil conducted on 109,104 schoolchildren from the ninth year of elementary school, day scholars in public and private schools in all Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District. Descriptive analysis of variables, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed with logistic regression estimates, adjusted for socioeconomic variables, obtaining the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI).

RESULTS

Among the participants, 52.2% were female. Twenty point nine percent of the students reported having experimented with cigarettes at least once. Adolescents who experienced more often feelings of loneliness (OR: 2.07; 95%CI: 1.98-2.16), difficulty sleeping (OR: 2.37; 95%CI: 2.52-2.48) and lower social interaction (OR: 1.27; 95%CI: 1.26-1.32), were more likely to smoke, regardless of socioeconomic status. The schoolchildren of parents or caregivers (OR: 2.39; 95%CI: 2.29-2.49) who did not know what their children did in their free time (OR: 1.52; 95%CI: 1.46-1.59) were associated with more frequent cigarette smoking.

CONCLUSION

An association was seen between aspects of mental health and the family context with the experimentation and consumption of tobacco in adolescents enrolled in the study in Brazil. These associations are independent of school type, sex and skin colour. It is important that programmes for the prevention of tobacco use in adolescence emphasise these findings.

Fatores associados ao consumo do cigarro entre adolescentes de escola pública

RESUMO Objetivo Estimar a prevalência de consumo de cigarro e sua associação com as variáveis sociodemográficas, iniciação sexual e vivência de violência doméstica em adolescentes escolares da rede pública de ensino de Guanambi, Bahia, Brasil. Método Estudo transversal, realizado com adolescentes. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas guiadas por um instrumento estruturado, e analisados conforme estatística descritiva e inferencial, com regressão logística múltipla. Resultados Participaram do estudo 370 adolescentes. A prevalência de consumo de cigarro foi de 17,6% e houve associação estatisticamente significante com as variáveis: idade maior que 15 anos (RP = 5,63 e IC = 95%: 1,33 – 23,85), sexo masculino (RP = 2,53 e IC = 95%: 1,47 – 4,37), não proferir religião (RP = 1,93 e IC = 95%: 0,99 – 3,75), trabalhar (RP = 2,17 e IC = 95%: 1,25 – 3,74), início das atividades sexuais (RP = 10,64 e IC= 95%: 5,31 – 21,33) e vivência de violência doméstica (RP = 3,61 e IC = 95%: 2,07 – 3,28). Conclusão A prevalência do consumo de cigarro e as variáveis associadas apontam para a necessidade de estratégias de intervenção nos grupos de adolescentes mais vulneráveis, com envolvimento familiar e auxílio dos profissionais da educação e saúde, em especial os enfermeiros que atuam na atenção primária.

Smoking among adolescents is associated with their own characteristics and with parental smoking: cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to analyze the association between smoking during adolescence and the characteristics of smoking and alcohol consumption among their parents.

DESIGN AND SETTING

Cross-sectional study in Londrina (PR), Brazil.

METHODS

The subjects comprised 1,231 adolescents aged 14-17 years. The adolescents and their parents answered a self-report questionnaire that asked for sociodemographic information and data on smoking and alcohol consumption. Multiple logistic regression models were used to analyze associations between smoking among adolescents and their characteristics (age, sex, period of the day for attending school, alcohol consumption and socioeconomic level) and their parents' characteristics (smoking, alcohol consumption, age and education level), adjusted according to the adolescents' characteristics (sex, age and socioeconomic level).

RESULTS

The prevalence of smoking among adolescents was 3.4% (95% confidence interval, CI: 2.4-4.4). Adolescents whose mothers or fathers were smokers were 2.0 and 2.5 times more likely to be smokers, respectively. The prevalence of smoking among adolescents with a smoking mother was 7.1% (95% CI: 2.6-10.7) and a smoking father, 5.4% (95% CI: 1.6-8.5). There were significant associations between smoking adolescents and age [5.2% (95% CI: 3.3-6.6)], studying at night [9.6% (95% CI: 4.0-15.5)] and alcohol consumption [69.0% (95% CI: 55.0-83.0)]. It was observed that the number of alcoholic beverage doses consumed was higher among smoking adolescents (P = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Adolescent smoking was associated with smoking by their parents, regardless of the gender of the parents or adolescents. Age, alcohol consumption and studying at night are characteristics of adolescents that can contribute towards smoking.
