Abstract
BACKGROUND Restorative solutions designed for edentulous patients such as dentures and their accompanying denture adhesives operate in the complex and dynamic environment represented by human oral physiology. Developing material models accounting for the viscoelastic behavior of denture adhesives can facilitate their further optimization within that unique physiological environment. This study aims to statistically quantify the degree of significance of three physiological variables - namely: temperature, adhesive swelling, and pH - on denture adhesive mechanical behavior. Further, based on these statistical significance estimations, a previously-developed viscoelastic material modelling approach for such denture adhesives is further expanded and developed to capture these variables' effects on mechanical behavior. METHODS In this study a comparable version of Denture adhesive Corega Comfort was analysed rheologically using the steady state frequency sweep tests. The experimentally derived rheological storage and loss modulus values for the selected physiological variables were statistically analyzed using multi parameter linear regression analysis and the Pearson's coefficient technique to understand the significance of each individual parameter on the relaxation spectrum of the denture adhesive. Subsequently, the parameters are incorporated into a viscoelastic material model based on Prony series discretization and time-temperature superposition, and the mathematical relationship for the loss modulus is deduced. RESULTS The results of this study clearly indicated that the variation in both the storage and loss modulus values can be accurately predicted using the oral cavity physiological parameters of temperature, swelling ratio, and pH with an adjusted R2 value of 0.85. The R2 value from the multi-parameter regression analysis indicated that the predictor variables can estimate the loss and storage modulus with a reasonable accuracy for at least 85% of the rheologically determined continuous relaxation spectrum with a confidence level of 98%. The Pearson's coefficient for the independent variables indicated that temperature and swelling have a strong influence on the loss modulus, whereas pH had a weak influence. Based on statistical analysis, these mathematical relationships were further developed in this study. CONCLUSIONS This multi-parameter viscoelastic material model is intended to facilitate future detailed numerical investigations performed with implementation of denture adhesives using the finite element method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Differences in the effects of cream-type denture adhesives and home liners remain unclear. OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study aimed to clarify the differences in the oral-hygiene status and masticatory performance between participants using cream-type denture adhesives and those using home liners. METHODS Masticatory performance with and without cream-type denture adhesives and home liners was evaluated using colour-changeable chewing gum. Oral hygiene was assessed using the tongue coating index (TCI). Propensity-score matching was performed using oral moisture, presence of palatal or mandibular protuberances, type of residual ridge, denture type (complete or partial denture), and denture retention as background factors. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to examine the differences in masticatory performance with and without cream-type denture adhesives and home liners and differences in masticatory performance and TCI between the cream-type denture adhesive and home-liner groups. RESULTS This study included 38 and 40 cream-type adhesive and home-liner users, respectively, and 17 pairs were obtained after propensity-score matching. The Wilcoxon signed-rank tests showed that masticatory performance was significantly different with and without the use of home liners, and higher values were obtained with the use of home-liners. However, the cream-type denture adhesive and home-liner groups showed no significant differences in terms of the change in masticatory performance with the use of them. Furthermore, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests showed that TCI values were significantly high in the cream-type adhesive group. CONCLUSION The findings in this study suggest that home liners improve masticatory performance and that participants regularly using cream-type denture adhesives have poorer oral hygiene.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the impact of prosthetic treatment on the quality of life of partially/completely edentulous patients through the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) scale. This pre-post observational study was conducted in the College of Dentistry, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, between November 2022 and September 2023. Eligible participants were those aged between 26 and 80, in need of prosthetic treatment, and able to complete the questionnaire voluntarily. The questionnaire presented to the patients had two sections; the first included demographic and dentures-related variables, and the second included the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Differences in overall OHIP-14 scores after treatment about demographic and prosthesis-related factors were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test/Kruskal Wallis test with a significance level of 0.05. Out of 108 participants, 65 were males, and 43 were females with an average age of 52 years with different prosthetic treatments (13.9 % fixed prostheses, 43.5 % removable partial, and 42.6 % complete dentures). 59.3 % brushed their teeth twice or more daily, and only 36.1 % checked them regularly. Comparison between the OHIP-14 items before and after treatment revealed that subjects exhibited improvement in all the domains. OHIP-14 scores did not differ significantly in terms of age, gender, and education after treatment. OHIP-14 score was considerably higher for patients with medical conditions (P = 0.007) and among complete denture wearers compared to patients with fixed prostheses (P = 0.025). Prosthetic treatment positively impacts oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), which improved after treatment, particularly in the social domain. There was an association between patients' medical condition, prosthesis type, and OHIP-14 score.

Abstract
Edentulism can generate negative impacts on self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and oral functions. Removable prostheses are commonly used for tooth replacement, but they may cause discomfort due to micromovements during mastication. Objective and quantifiable methods are needed to evaluate these micromovements. A pilot study was conducted to determine the micromovements in removable prostheses during mastication using a 3D electromagnetic articulography (EMA-3D) system. One elderly participant wearing lower removable prostheses and an upper total well-fitting removable prosthesis was studied. The EMA-3D system was used to record movements in three spatial planes. Peanuts were given as test food, and the participant was instructed to chew normally while recordings were carried out until feeling the need to swallow. Analyses of the upper total prosthesis show micromovements ranging from 0.63 ± 0.11 to 1.02 ± 0.13 mm. During simultaneous analyses of the upper prosthesis and lower partial prosthesis, interference was not observed. This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility of using the EMA-3D system to evaluate micromovements in removable prostheses during mastication. Further research is needed to evaluate a larger sample and assess the clinical implications of these micromovements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Denture adhesives can be useful in improving patients' satisfaction with complete dentures. However, comparison clinical trials are lacking. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to assess the satisfaction of edentulous patients and their oral health impact profile when provided with 3 types of denture adhesives. METHODS Sixty-four completely edentulous patients seeking complete dentures for their first time were randomly divided into 3 groups. Each group received a set of complete dentures, which were adjusted at review appointments until participants reported no complaints. After 1 month of using the dentures, participants rated their overall satisfaction and their satisfaction regarding comfort, retention, stability, and efficiency of mastication and speech on a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Participants also filled out the oral health impact profile for edentulous patients (OHIP-EDENT) questionnaire. Each group was then given 1 type of denture adhesive to use. Group C received Corega Ultra denture fixative cream (GlaxoSmithKline), Group O received Olivafix (Bonyf), and Group S received Sea. Bond adhesive strips (Sea.Bond). Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences in VAS scores before and after using the adhesive within each group and Wilcoxon-signed rank test was used to compare OHIP scores and total OHIP values before and after using the adhesive within each group (p = 0.05). Furthermore, Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare the differences before and after using the adhesives in VAS and OHIP values between the 3 groups. RESULTS Significantly higher VAS values were detected in all groups and significantly lower values for many OHIP items in addition to total OHIP values were detected in all groups after using the adhesives (P < 0.05), except for the ease of cleaning for Group O and Group S (P > 0.05). No significant differences were found in VAS and OHIP values between the 3 groups (P > 0.05), except for the ease of cleaning which was significantly different between Group C and Group S (p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS Using denture adhesives for completely edentulous patients resulted in higher patient satisfaction as indicated by higher VAS scores as well as improved quality of life as indicated by lower OHIP-EDENT scores after using the adhesives. These improvements were not dependent on the type of adhesive, except for ease of cleaning as adhesive strips were easier to clean than paste type adhesives. Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The influence of different denture adhesive forms on retention, stability, denture movement, and masticatory efficiency have been studied. However, studies that investigated their effect on patient-based outcomes are scarce. PURPOSE The purpose of this crossover randomized controlled trial was to investigate the influence of 3 different denture adhesive forms on patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in edentulous individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 30 edentulous participants were enrolled. They initially received conventional dentures, which they used for 3 months. They were then instructed to use 3 forms of denture adhesives (cushion, paste, and powder) for 3 months each. Patient satisfaction was assessed by using a visual analog scale (VAS), and OHRQoL was assessed by using the oral health impact profile in the edentulous adults instrument. Assessments were done 3 months after wearing the conventional dentures, then after by using each denture adhesive form for 3 months, with a 1-month washout period. The average retention duration for each form and participant preference were also evaluated. Statistical analysis was conducted by using the repeated measures ANOVA test followed by the Scheffé test for VAS scores and retention duration. The Friedman test followed by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for OHRQoL scores (α=.05). RESULTS Irrespective of their forms, denture adhesives significantly improved patient satisfaction in most aspects (P<.001) and significantly improved OHRQoL (P<.001). VAS scores for the cushion form were significantly higher than those for the other 2 forms regarding general satisfaction, comfort, and ease of cleaning dentures and tissues. For stability and masticatory ability, the cushion and paste forms were significantly better (P<.05) than the powder form. OHRQoL scores were significantly higher (worse) for the powder form compared with the other 2 forms for the functional limitation, physical pain, and physical disability domains, with insignificant differences between the cushion and paste forms (P>.05). The powder form found the shortest retention duration and the least preference. CONCLUSIONS Denture adhesives significantly improved OHRQoL and almost all aspects of patient satisfaction. The cushion form provided higher satisfaction levels for most aspects, followed by paste and then powder. OHRQoL outcomes were comparable for all forms, except for the functional limitation, physical pain, and physical disability domains, which were significantly better with the cushion and paste forms. The cushion and paste forms were more retentive and more preferred by the participants than the powder form.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to compare the responses of 30 denture wearers' opinions concerning the efficiency of two types of adhesives and estimate their satisfaction level using denture adhesive (DA). Materials and methods 30 completely edentulous patients were divided randomly into two groups. Each group received one type of DAs (SECURE, COREGA) and was instructed to follow the same sequence of application. Each type of adhesive was used for seven days, as recommended by the manufacturer. The patients were requested to fill out a questionnaire considering their opinion and satisfaction regarding denture retention, chewing ability and duration of adhesives. Results The majority of patients stated that the prosthetic DAs enhanced their retention, chewing, stability, and efficiency of dentures. There was a significant difference in patient satisfaction regarding denture retention in the mandible and the duration of the adhesive in the mouth. Concerning ability of the patient to remove the adhesive from their mouth, the taste, or the retention of the maxillary denture, there were no statistically significant differences between the two DAs. Conclusions The results of the present study showed that overall satisfaction of complete denture wearers was high significantly different when a herbal DA was applied. This includes improvements in their duration of retention effectiveness, greater stability, and retention of the lower mandibular dentures. To use DA effectively, patients should be oriented by their dentists. Patient education is essential to provide them with a better understanding of both the appropriate technique for applying DA and the possible outcome they may experience.

Abstract
The type of denture adhesive, cream or home-liner, chosen by regular denture adhesive users and oral conditions contributing to this selection require elucidation. The factors associated with denture adhesive selection were investigated through a face-to-face survey on oral and denture conditions. Age, sex, oral moisture, masticatory performance, retention and stability of the removable denture, ridge shape, mucosal thickness, and duration of denture use were examined in cream and home-liner-type denture adhesive users who did not regularly visit a dentist. Univariate analysis and multivariate analyses were performed. There were 38 and 40 cream-type and home-liner-type adhesive users, respectively. The type of denture adhesive was significantly associated with the oral moisture value, retention, ridge shape, mucosal thickness, and duration of denture use in univariate analyses. The residual ridge conditions with large factor loadings for ridge shape and mucosal thickness and duration of denture use were significantly related to the denture adhesive selection in multivariate logistic analysis. The residual ridge conditions and duration of denture use were significant factors in the selection of cream- and home-liner-type denture adhesives. These results can provide appropriate guidance based on the adhesives patients without dental supervision are more likely to choose.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence and risk factors for non-adaptation of the conventional mandibular complete denture (CMCD). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 108 edentulous patients were rehabilitated with complete dentures (CDs) and followed up at 3- and 6-month intervals. Adaptation was confirmed based on chewing, phonetics, and comfortable swallowing with the CDs. The risk factors among sociodemographic and patient-centered factors were analyzed. Statistical analyses included the chi-square test and then a multivariate analysis. RESULTS After 3 months, 38.0% of patients showed non-adaptation to CMCDs. Non-adaptation was significantly associated with the absence of previous mandibular denture experience (p = 0.042), ulcerations after 15 days of rehabilitation (p < 0.001), and a reduced posterior mandibular ridge (p = 0.035). After 6 months, this incidence decreased to 14.1%. The factors associated with non-adaptation were ulcerative lesions after 15 (p < 0.001) and 30 (p < 0.001) days of the delivery of CDs and the non-regular use of mandibular CDs (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The incidence of non-adaptation was higher after 3 months, with reduction after 6 months. Sociodemographic variables did not influence the adaptation. After 3 months, the absence of previous experience, traumatic ulcers, and reduced mandibular ridges hindered the adaptation of patients to mandibular CDs. After 6 months, only the occurrence of ulcerative lesions and non-regular wear of dentures were risk factors for non-adaptation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE A considerable number of patients have difficulties in adapting to the mandibular dentures. Identifying the factors of non-adaptation of the dentures will contribute to increasing the predictability of this critical adaptation period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review aims to investigate the efficacy of denture adhesives (DAs) for complete dentures (CDs), and to provide clinical recommendations for prosthodontists and general practitioners. DATA/SOURCES Electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CENTRAL) and gray literatures were searched (up to March 2020) for relevant randomized and non-randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs and CCTs) evaluating the efficacy of DAs when applied to CDs. Primary outcomes were objectively assessed variables directly related to mastication (denture retention, maximum bite force and masticatory efficiency). Secondary outcomes included other objectively assessed variables and patient-reported outcomes. STUDY SELECTION Of the 1729 records identified, 39 studies (43 articles) were included in the analysis. Among them, 23 were RCTs and 16 were CCTs, with two multicenter clinical trials (1 RCT and 1 CCT). Meta-analysis results indicated that DAs provided significantly higher retention (SMD 1.34, 95 % CI: 0.89-1.79, P < 0.001) for CDs. Bite force (SMD 0.98, 95 % CI: 0.50-1.47, P < 0.001) and masticatory performance (SMD 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.23-1.22, P = 0.004) of the CD wearers were also improved after using DAs, but the effect size was relatively smaller. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this systematic review, it is concluded that DAs can improve denture retention, bite force and masticatory performance of CD wearers. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study investigated the effects of all types of DAs for CDs in terms of their effects on denture retention, masticatory performance, oral health-related quality of life and oral microorganisms for CD wearers.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM A consensus on whether the use of a complete-denture adhesive provides a clinical benefit remains unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review of randomized controlled trials was to evaluate the use of adhesive in complete dentures in terms of retention and stability, patient-reported outcomes measures, and masticatory performance. MATERIAL AND METHODS A search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for articles up to October 2020. The Cochrane collaboration tool was used to analyze the risk of bias. The grading quality of evidence and strength of recommendations (GRADE) tool was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS Thirteen studies were included with a total of 516 participants with a mean age of 65.5 years. Most studies reported a significant improvement in the retention and stability, patient-reported outcomes measures, and masticatory performance of complete dentures with the use of denture adhesive compared with no-denture adhesive. Newly developed denture adhesives were reported to have promising results. Most studies presented a low risk of bias, but the certainty of the evidence was classified as low to moderate. CONCLUSIONS Participants had improved treatment outcomes when using denture adhesives because they significantly improve the retention and stability, patient-reported outcomes measures, and masticatory performance. However, further high-quality studies are needed to confirm these results with newly developed denture adhesives.

Abstract
AIM The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of denture adhesives (DAs) in completely edentulous denture wearers compared to not using DAs. METHODS AND RESULTS PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE were searched from the database inception up to 6 February 2020 for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) involving patients with complete dentures in both arches where the use of DAs was compared to no use of DAs. A total of 497 abstracts were reviewed, resulting in inclusion of 10 RCTs. Outcomes reported in the included trials were thoroughly reviewed and tabulated. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used. All 10 studies were assessed at unclear (10%) or high risk of bias (90%). Studies showed DAs improved mainly retention/stability, and masticatory/chewing ability/performance, compared to no adhesives. CONCLUSION Most studies showed favorable results for DAs on retention and stability of complete dentures, masticatory performance, patient's comfort and satisfaction. Due to the heterogeneity of the outcomes, unclear/high risk of bias and small sample sizes, the quality of the evidence was very low. More high-quality research is needed with improved blinding and use of standardized methods to evaluate the efficacy of DAs.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Denture adhesives are products used by wearers of removable dental prosthesis; however, systematic reviews on their influence on masticatory performance are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficiency of denture adhesives in improving the masticatory performance of users of complete dentures (CD). MATERIAL AND METHODS This systematic review was organized from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist, and the methods were registered on the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO-CRD42020187385). The focus question was as follows: "Does the use of denture adhesives improve the masticatory performance of patients with removable dental prostheses?" The databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were used to extract information. RESULTS The search yielded 1338 articles, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria and were selected. All included studies were crossover randomized controlled trials including bimaxillary edentulous individuals. Masticatory performance was evaluated by using a comminution and sieve method. CONCLUSIONS Denture adhesives significantly increased the masticatory performance of CD users.

Abstract
Background An increase in the number of elderly edentulous patients likely leads to a greater demand for dentures and denture adhesives. As denture adhesives have both positive and negative features, dentists need to know the types of denture adhesive users to be able to provide instruction to denture wearers on how to use denture adhesives effectively. This study aims to examine the utilization of denture adhesives and associated factors. Methods Seven closed-ended questionnaires were developed for a web-based survey. After that, Fisher’s exact tests were performed to determine the difference in the denture adhesive usage rate by gender, type of denture, last dental visit, and smoking status. A multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis was performed with denture adhesive use or non-use as the dependent variable and the other items as independent variables. Next, Fisher’s exact tests and a multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis were performed with the type of denture adhesives as the dependent variable in the same way. Statistical analyses were performed for all denture wearers, complete denture wearers, and partial denture wearers. The level of statistical significance was set at p = 0.05. Results A total of 1470 denture wearers in Japan participated in this study. Of these, 318 used denture adhesives, while 212 (66.7%) used cream; 74 (23.3%) used home liner; 25 (7.9%) used powder; four (1.3%) used sheets; and three (0.9%) used several types. The Fisher’s exact tests revealed that the ratios of using denture adhesives were significantly higher for complete denture wearers (p < 0.001), last dental visit over 1 year (p = 0.005), and smokers (p = 0.005). For partial denture wearers, the ratio was significantly higher in smokers (p = 0.262). The multivariate adjusted logistic regression revealed that denture adhesive use or non-use were significantly associated with the type of denture and smoking status in all denture wearers, and just smoking status in partial denture wearers. There were no significant results about the type of denture adhesive selection. Conclusions From all denture wearers, complete denture wearers and smokers are more likely to use denture adhesives. In addition, smokers significantly use denture adhesives if they are partial denture wearers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This proof-of-principle, single-center, randomized, examiner-blind, crossover study compared two experimental polyvinyl acetate (PVA)-based denture adhesives (Test Adhesives 1 and 2) with a marketed reference polymethyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride (PMV/MA)-based adhesive and no adhesive using incisal bite force area over baseline over 12 hr (AOB0-12 ) in participants with an at least moderately well-fitting complete maxillary denture. Previous in vitro studies suggested the experimental denture adhesives provided superior performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants were randomized to a treatment sequence such that each received each treatment once. Prior to treatment application (baseline) and at 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 hr following the application, participants bit on a force transducer until their maxillary denture dislodged. Between-treatment differences in AOB0-12 were analyzed using analysis of covariance. For study validity, the reference adhesive was compared with no adhesive. Participants were asked to rate sensory experiences and ease of denture removal. RESULTS Twenty-three participants were included in the modified intent-to-treat population. Although Test Adhesives 1 and 2 had a higher mean AOB0-12 than no adhesive, differences were not statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was also found between the reference adhesive and no adhesive; hence, study validity was not attained. Participants did not report any clear differences between the test or reference adhesives in terms of taste or feel; however, dentures were easier to remove with the test adhesives versus reference. No treatment-related adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION Neither the experimental PVA-based denture adhesives nor the PMV/MA-based reference product demonstrated a statistically significant difference in incisal bite force AOB0-12 compared with no adhesive. The reasons for these unexpected results is unclear; they suggest that findings of in vitro tests for denture adhesive performance are not always translated to in vivo performance (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02937870).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many reports show that denture adhesives improve the retention and stability of dentures. However, few randomized controlled trials have examined the effects of denture adhesives. OBJECTIVE This 10-center randomized controlled trial with parallel groups involving 200 edentulous patients wearing complete dentures aimed to evaluate the effects of short-term use of cream and powder denture adhesives. METHODS Patients were allocated into 2 cream- and powder-type adhesive groups and 1 control group. Intervention groups were treated with the 2 adhesives (1 each), and the control group received saline solution. Adhesive or control was applied to the denture-mucosal surface for 4 d, and data at baseline and after day 4 of intervention (i.e., 8 meals) were obtained. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with a 100-mm visual analog scale. Oral health-related quality of life was measured with the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. Perceived chewing ability was evaluated by a questionnaire regarding ease of chewing and swallowing food. Between-group comparisons were performed with Kruskal-Wallis tests with the Mann-Whitney U test adjusted by Bonferroni correction. Within-group comparisons of pre- and postintervention measurements were performed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Intention-to-treat analysis was also performed. RESULTS Between-group comparisons showed no significant differences for general satisfaction or Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. However, significant differences in satisfaction with various denture functions with cream- and powder-type adhesives were seen in pre- and postintervention comparisons (P < 0.05). Significant differences were also observed for perceived chewing ability of hard foods (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION These results suggest that although denture adhesives do not invariably improve denture function, they do affect subjective evaluations and possibly chewing of hard foods. Therefore, the effects of denture adhesive use are insufficient to resolve any fundamental dissatisfaction with dentures ( ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01712802 ). KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study suggest that denture adhesives should be applied under certain conditions; however, an appropriate diagnosis is important before application. These practice-based data provide information to establish evidence-based guidelines for applying denture adhesives.

Abstract
Abstract Several attachment systems for mandibular implant-supported overdentures are currently available and studies are required to understand their mechanical properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the retention force and wear characteristics of three attachment systems in a simulation of the cyclic dislodging of implant-supported overdentures. Thirty samples were fabricated and divided into 3 groups: 1-O-ring; 2-Mini Ball; and 3-Equator. A mechanical fatigue test was applied to the specimens using a servo-hydraulic universal testing machine performing 5500 insertion/removal cycles (f=0.8 Hz), immersed in artificial saliva. Retention force values were obtained before and after 1500, 3000, and 5500 cycles using a speed of 1 mm/min and a load cell of 1 kN. One specimen from each group was randomly selected and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA and the Bonferroni post hoc test were used for statistical analyses (α=0.05). The O-ring system remained stable during all periods tested and exhibited significantly lower retention force values than the Mini Ball and Equator systems. The Mini Ball system exhibited a significant increase in retention force after the mechanical test (baseline=21.04±3.29N; 5500 cycles=24.01±3.30N).The Equator system exhibited a significant decrease in retention force after each period tested, but the values were higher than the other systems. The type of attachment was found to influence retention force in different ways after mechanical tests. The Equator system exhibited the highest retention force values. The Mini Ball and Equator matrices produced deformation and wear on the surfaces without breakage of the polyamide rings.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to compare the satisfaction of patients regarding retention, stability and accumulation of particles with a randomized, double-blind crossed method in users with complete dentures with and without adhesive. Material and Methods Seventeen edentulous individuals were randomized and received new upper and lower complete dentures. After a period of adaptation, they participated in some masticatory tests and clinical revisions, after use the protheses with and without the use of two denture adhesives: Adhesive A (Fittydent, Fittydent International GmbH) and adhesive B (Corega, GlaxoSmithKline) at 0, 7 and 14 days. Satisfaction was measured immediately after each test through a survey using a VAS scale (0-10) and data were analyzed with McNemar's test with Bonferroni correction. Results The results showed significant differences (p<.01) between the study groups with adhesive A - B and the group without adhesive, but no significant differences were found between the two stickers for any of the variables studied. Conclusions Complete denture adhesives significantly improved the satisfaction of patients because a better retention, stability and less accumulation of particles of the food substitute between the denture and the mucosa is obtained compared with non-use of complete denture adhesives. Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Limited mandibular movements are one of the most important signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and may cause functional difficulties. PURPOSE The purpose of this double-blind, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of treatment with only educational or education associated with self-care therapies on the pattern of mandibular movements of women with chronic painful TMDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-two women were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups, control group (CG, n=13), education group (EG, n=16), and education and self-care group (ESG, n=13), according to the sequence of treatment they received. A kinesiograph device recorded mandibular movements during maximum mouth opening and mastication at baseline (T0) and at 30-day (T1) and 60-day (T2) follow-up. Kinesiographic data were statistically analyzed using 1-way ANOVA, followed by the Bonferroni test for multiple comparisons of means (α=.05). RESULTS The ESG group demonstrated an improvement in the maximum vertical opening (MVO= 5.1 ±3.4 mm; P=.012) and anteroposterior mandibular movement (MAM) during maximum opening (7.4 ±9.5; P=.019), significantly higher than that of the EG (MVO=1.8 ±3.5 mm; MAM=0.8 ±5.0 mm) and the CG (MVO=0.9 ±3.8 mm; MAM=0.8 ±4.4 mm) after 30 days of follow-up. Moreover, at T1, vertical mandibular movement during mastication was significantly higher in the ESG group (17.4 ±1.7 mm) than in the EG group (15.0 ±2.8, P=.027). No significant differences were found between the women who received treatment with educational and self-care therapies for 60 days and the women who received this treatment for 30 days. CONCLUSIONS In the short-term, education and self-care treatment positively influenced the mandibular movement pattern of women with chronic painful TMDs.
