Predictive factors of alcohol and tobacco use in adolescents

The relation between toxic substance consumption and the positive mental health of adolescents, a descriptive cross-sectional study

This study aims to find out how adolescents' consumption of toxic substances such as tobacco and alcohol is influenced by the Positive Mental Health. A quantitative methodology with a cross-sectional design has been used to achieve the final conclusions. The intervention was carried out by applying the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire developed by Teresa Lluch to a group of adolescents from Don Juan Manuel High School in Guadalajara (Spain). Our results shows that the Positive Mental Health of adolescents have a great impact on the tobacco and alcohol consumption. The scientific literature consulted signs that people who do not consume substances tend to have better Positive Mental Health.

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption: A National Ecological Study in Mexican Adolescents

Alcohol and cigarettes are the psychoactive substances that adolescents use most frequently. When both addictions are combined, they carry the worst burden of disease globally. The objective of this study was to identify whether socioeconomic factors correlate with alcohol and tobacco consumption in Mexican adolescents aged 10 years or more and to establish the relationship in the consumption between the two substances. This ecological study utilized data describing alcohol and tobacco consumption among adolescents aged 10-16 years (n = 48,837 ≈ N = 11,621,100). Having ever consumed any alcohol-containing beverage constituted alcohol consumption. Smoking a cigarette within 30 days constituted cigarette consumption. For both variables, the state-level percentages reported in the survey were used. Diverse socioeconomic variables were collected from official sources. Data on the prevalence of tobacco use and alcohol consumption were entered into an Excel database estimated for each of the states of the Mexican Republic, as well as the socioeconomic variables. We performed the analysis using Stata 14. Consumption prevalence was 15.0% for alcohol and 4.2% for tobacco. Alcohol consumption was not correlated with any studied socioeconomic variable (p > 0.05). The prevalence of tobacco consumption among elementary school students correlated (p < 0.05) with the portion of the population living in private dwellings without sewage, drainage, or sanitation (r = 0.3853). The prevalence of tobacco consumption among middle-school adolescents correlated with the portion of the employed population that earned up to two minimum wages (r = 0.3960), the percentage in poverty by income 2008 (r = 0.4754) and 2010 (r = 0.4531), and the percentage in extreme poverty by income 2008 (r = 0.4612) and 2010 (r = 0.4291). Positive correlations were found between tobacco consumption and alcohol consumption among both elementary (r = 0.5762, p=0.0006) and middle-school children (r = 0.7016, p=0.0000). These results suggest that certain socioeconomic factors correlate with tobacco consumption but not alcohol consumption. A correlation between alcohol consumption and tobacco consumption was observed. The results can be used for developing interventions in adolescents.

Exposure to Electronic Media, Smoking and Alcohol Drinking Among Guyanese Adults

Use of electronic media has been shown to be associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption behavior among adult population. Currently, not much is known about the risk factors of tobacco and alcohol consumption in Guyana. The present study aimed to explore the association between exposure to electronic media and tobacco and alcohol consumption by adjusting for the sociodemographic correlates.

Predicting adolescent alcohol and other drug problems using electronic health records data

IMPORTANCE

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use problems may cause significant burden on affected adolescents and their families, yet treatment providers often do not identify these problems early enough.

OBJECTIVE

To develop, and internally and externally validate a multivariable prediction model of adolescent AOD problems using child- and maternal-level predictors before age 12, and child-level predictors between ages 12 to 18, as recorded in the electronic health records (EHR).

DESIGN

A retrospective cohort study conducted time-to-event analyses using Cox proportional hazards models.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

41,172 children born between 1997 and 2000 at four health plans (Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, KPHI; Kaiser Permanente Northern California, KPNC; Geisinger Clinic, GC; and Henry Ford Health System, HFHS) who had continuous membership since birth and linkable maternal records in the health plan.

OUTCOMES

AOD use problems between ages 12 to 18, defined as either: 1) having a contact with the AOD treatment program or 2) receiving a non-tobacco AOD diagnosis in an inpatient or outpatient encounter.

EXPOSURES

Candidate predictor variables include demographics, socioeconomic status, and clinical diagnoses of the children and the mothers.

RESULTS

Overall, 1400 (3.4%) adolescents had an AOD disorder between ages 12 to 18; the median follow-up time post-age 12 was 5.3 years. The research team developed two final prediction models: a "baseline" model of 10 child-level and 7 maternal-level predictors before age 12, and a more comprehensive "time-varying" model, which incorporated child risk factors after age 12 as time-varying covariates in addition to the baseline model predictors. Model performance evaluation showed good discrimination performance of the models, with the concordance index improved for the time-varying model, especially for prediction of AOD events in late adolescence.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

This study identified a number of child and maternal characteristics and diagnoses routinely available in EHR data as predictive of risk for developing AOD problems in adolescence. Further, we found that risk of developing problems varies significantly by the timing and persistence of the risk factors. Findings may have potential clinical implications for prevention and identification of adolescent AOD problems, but more research is needed, especially across additional health systems.

ANÁLISIS DE LA ACTIVIDAD FÍSICA Y ESTILOS DE VIDA EN ESTUDIANTES UNIVERSITARIOS

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las relaciones entre las formas de motivación autodeterminadas, las necesidades psicológicas básicas y variables pertenecientes a estilos de vida saludables, así como hallar las diferencias en función del género, en estudiantes universitarios. Los cuestionarios validados se aplicaron a una muestra de 218 sujetos, 79 chicos y 139 chicas (M = 20,80 años; DT = 2,12). Los resultados mostraron que las formas de motivación más autodeterminadas se relacionaron de forma positiva con las necesidades psicológicas básicas, y con variables de estilo de vida que realzan la salud, y de manera negativa con el consumo de tabaco. Además, los chicos presentaron niveles más altos que las chicas en motivación intrínseca y extrínseca, necesidades psicológicas básicas, hábitos alimenticios, hábitos de descanso y práctica de actividad física. Se destaca la importancia de fomentar estrategias motivacionales para fomentar en los estudiantes un estilo de vida saludable.

Is psychological resilience a protective factor between motivations and excessive smartphone use?

Excessive smartphone use has recently become a topic of interest. Prior studies have suggested that psychological well-being variables and motivations are important predictors of excessive smartphone use. However, few have examined the internal mechanism of these factors in leading to excessive smartphone use. Based on Compensatory Internet Use theory, we investigated the moderating role of psychological resilience between two types of motivation — escapism and social interaction — and excessive smartphone use. Selecting 576 typical smartphone users, we found: (1) Escapism motivation and psychological resilience significantly correlate with excessive smartphone use, whereas social interaction motivation does not; (2) Psychological resilience moderates the relationship between both escapism and social interaction motivation and excessive smartphone use. Our study demonstrates the mechanism of different types of motivation and the protective effect of psychological resilience on excessive smartphone use. Thus, we emphasize resilience training that would help train people to be able to cope with life problems more effectively.

Resiliencia. Diferencias entre estudiantes universitarios y jóvenes trabajadores

Objetivo. Comparar los niveles de resiliencia entre jóvenes universitarios y jóvenes trabajadores, e identificarposibles relaciones de dicha variable con la edad de los participantes. Método. La muestra, de tipo incidental,estuvo conformada por 188 jóvenes, cuya edad oscilaba entre los 18 y los 27 años. Al momento del estudio,138 cursaban una carrera profesional universitaria y 50 eran trabajadores. Para medir la variable del estudiose utilizó la Escala de Resiliencia traducida y adaptada al español. Resultados. El principal hallazgo es que losjóvenes universitarios obtienen puntajes significativamente mayores que los trabajadores, tanto en el total de la prueba de resiliencia (t(186) = -3.98, p = 0.000, d = 0.65) como en las dos dimensiones que la componen,Competencia personal (t(186) = -4.45, p = 0.000, d = 0.73) y Aceptación de sí mismo y de la vida (t(186) =-2.23, p = 0.026, d = 0.36). Conclusión. Un mayor nivel de estudios podría considerarse un factor protectorante la adversidad, al relacionarse con una mayor resiliencia.

Predictors of alcohol consumption among in-school adolescents in the Central Region of Ghana: A baseline information for developing cognitive-behavioural interventions

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Despite a recent shift in school going adolescents' engagement in health compromising behaviours and their related socio-economic implications on developing societies, it is surprising that baseline information for planned interventions is sparse. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of alcohol drinking and related behaviours among in-school adolescents in the Junior High Schools (JHS) in the Central Region of Ghana.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Descriptive cross-sectional design was employed with multistage sampling procedures to sample 1400 school going adolescents in JHS in the Central Region. Preliminary findings using simple frequencies and percentages revealed 42% alcohol drinking prevalence in the region. High prevalence of drunkenness (73%, n = 406) and early exposure to alcohol drinking when students were in primary school (52%, n = 286) were noted. Community festivals and use of alcohol as a form of medicine were enabling factors of alcohol consumption in the region. Binary logistic regression analysis also showed that geographical location was a significant predictor of alcohol drinking among school going adolescents, with students in the southern and central part of the region at greater risks of drinking alcohol than those from the northern part (OR = .696, 95% CI = 0.52-926, p = .013). However, no statistical significant variations were found in the odds of drinking alcohol for age (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 0.86-1.48, p = .370), gender (OR = .81, 95% CI = 0.65-1.01, p = .06), religious affiliation (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.94-1.89, p = .10), parental communication (OR = .86, 95% CI = 0.66-1.06, p = .13), academic performance (OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 0.79-1.45, p = .05) and socioeconomic status (OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 0.95-1.53, p = .12).

CONCLUSIONS

With this baseline data, it was recommended that schools' curricula should include preventive cognitive-behavioural interventions that teach drug resistance skills and anti-drug norms. These interventions would foster the development of requisite knowledge and social skills (e.g., developing competence) for resisting social and peer influences that may trigger alcohol use and perhaps other drugs. Potentially, the motivation for alcohol use among school going adolescents in the region would be minimized, if not prevented.
