Factors associated with teaching efficacy among nurse educators in hospital settings

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study was to examine differences in personal characteristics, core practice competency and role stress according to levels of teaching efficacy among clinical nurse educators working in general hospitals.

BACKGROUND

In the clinical setting, successful adaptation to instruction among practicing clinical nurse educators is challenging.

DESIGN

Secondary analysis of data through a cross-sectional study design was adopted.

METHODS

Originally, 565 nurses were recruited from general hospitals; 364 were included in this study. Participants were nurses with more than 1 year of experience in various settings from 16 general hospitals wherein nursing students trained for clinical practicum in five cities in South Korea. Self-reported data were collected via the Teaching Efficacy, Core Practice Competency and Perceived Stress Scales assessing clinical education-related teaching efficacy, core practice competency and role stress. In the analyses, comparison between nurses with high and low teaching efficacy was conducted. We have followed through the EQUATOR (e.g. STROBE) research checklist for the preparation of this manuscript.

RESULTS

According to univariate analysis, levels of teaching efficacy were shown to be higher with age, longer clinical careers, in those undergoing a doctoral course or with a doctorate, previous experience in providing clinical education and enrolment in continuing education for clinical education. In the multivariate analysis, enrolment in continuing education for clinical education, assessment and intervention skills, critical thinking skills, teaching skills and role ambiguity were associated with level of teaching efficacy among nurse educators.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of this study, we recommend that nursing administrators should foster the recognition of personal characteristics in potential clinical nurse educators or preceptors with high teaching efficacy.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Nurses should be supported by providing them with opportunities for professional development to enhance teaching efficacy.

Nurses' experiences of their competence at mentoring nursing students during clinical practice: A systematic review of qualitative studies

Aim To identify and synthesize the best available evidence on nurse mentors' experiences of their competence in mentoring nursing students during clinical practice.

DESIGN

The research employed a systematic literature review that followed the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI).

DATA SOURCES

The databases CINAHL, Medline Ovid, Scopus, Eric, Web of Science, Medic, and OATD were systemically searched from 2000 to 2017.

REVIEW METHODS

The identified studies were screened by title, abstract (n = 3080) and full-text (n = 91) using the following inclusion criteria: registered nurses, nurses' experiences of competence in mentoring nursing students, acute and primary care organizations providing clinical practice for nursing students, qualitative study. Quality appraisal was performed, data extracted and findings from the included studies (n = 21) were pooled using meta-aggregation with the Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-QARI).

RESULTS

A total of 92 extracted findings were aggregated into 21 categories and then further grouped into five synthesized findings: 1) creating an interactive relationship with the student; 2) developing mentor's characteristics and cooperation with stakeholders; 3) providing goal-oriented mentoring; 4) supporting students' development to nurse profession; 5) supporting the student's learning process.

CONCLUSIONS

This review demonstrated that multifaceted mentoring competence is essential to supporting students' learning processes and helping them become confident professionals. For this reason, the findings suggest that healthcare organizations which provide clinical practice for students should emphasize developing the mentoring competence of nurses by offering nurse mentors adequate education, ensuring that the organizational structure affords them sufficient support, and creating a receptive learning atmosphere.

Reliability and Repeatability of the Instrument for the Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students (ASNS)

Background and objectives: Stress in nursing students is a very common experience, especially when they face clinical practice. The aims of this study were to perform a transcultural adaptation and to examine the reliability and repeatability of the Instrument for the Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students for a Spanish population. Methods: A test–retest analysis was carried out in two face-to-face sessions with the students with a lapse of 10 days between the two sessions. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between the months of May and June 2018. Sixty-four nursing students were recruited with a consecutive sampling method that targeted individuals in the freshman class. Results: A good internal consistency was shown for the total score (α = 0.8861) and for each of the six domains. The test–retest reliability, using the Wilcoxon paired test, was not significant, indicating no differences between the total scores or the domain scores (p ≥ 0.05). Finally, Bland and Altman plots of visual distributions did not show differences between the total scores and the domain scores. Conclusion: The Instrument for the Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students was shown to be a reliable tool for measuring stress factors among Spanish nursing students.

Attitude of Nursing and Midwifery students towards clinical practice and its associated factors in Northwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to assess the attitude of Nursing and Midwifery students towards clinical practice and its associated factors at University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia. 2018.

RESULT

The prevalence of a favorable attitude towards clinical practice was found to be 42.9% in this study. The odds of having favorable attitude were found to be 2 times higher among students who prepared well for clinical practice [AOR = 2.07, 95%, CI (1.25, 3.44)] compared with counterparts. Similarly students who communicate well with clinical staffs [AOR = 1.89, 95%, CI (1.05, 3.41)], practiced in well-equipped hospital [AOR = 1.76, 95%, CI (1.01, 3.06)], and accompanying frequently by a clinical supervisor [AOR = 1.69, 95%, CI (1.02, 2.81)] were more likely to have favorable attitude compared with counterparts.

Nursing Degree students' perception about their clinical practice environment: a phenomenological study

AIM

To explore the perception of fourth-year nursing students of the healthcare environment where their training process in clinical practices takes place.

METHODS

Phenomenological qualitative study based on the hermeneutical philosophy of Gádamer that included the development of focus groups and semi-structured interviews in a sample of fourth-year nursing students from the University of Almería. The collection period was in February 2016. The information obtained was transcribed and analyzed by inductive strategies in search of emerging categories.

RESULTS

The analysis revealed two main categories: (1) influence of the clinical environment on the healthcare and teaching performance of nurses and on student learning and (2) training and job prospects for the future professionals. Each of them showed two subcategories with their corresponding codes. The information collected showed the experiences and perceptions of Nursing students regarding the healthcare environment where their training process in clinical practices takes place.

CONCLUSIONS

This study enabled us to discover the perception of fourth-year nursing students of the environment where their training process in clinical practices takes place. Knowledge of this phenomenon helps to identify deficits in students' clinical learning and to adapt university curricula to their training needs in order to guarantee their success as professionals facing future clinical-labour demands.
