The effects of progressive muscular relaxation as a nursing procedure used for those who suffer from stress due to multiple sclerosis

Imagen guiada para la calidad de vida de mujeres con cáncer de cuello uterino: estudio cuasi-experimental

Introducción: Las terapias de mente y cuerpo, como la relajación de imágenes guiadas, que se encuentran entre las principales prácticas integradoras utilizadas por los pacientes con cáncer, son esenciales para mantener un equilibrio saludable entre la activación simpática y parasimpática en el cerebro. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de la relajación de imagen guiada, con el uso de realidad virtual, sobre la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud de mujeres con cáncer de cuello uterino en tratamiento concomitante con quimiorradioterapia. Materiales y Método: Estudio cuasi-experimental, realizado en un hospital de referencia de oncología en el sur de Brasil, de octubre de 2019 a enero de 2021. Participaron 52 mujeres, divididas en dos grupos, experimental (intervención de relajación guiada por imaginería con realidad virtual), y control (rutina por defecto). El instrumento funcional se utilizó para evaluar las puntuaciones de calidad de vida relacionada con la salud. Evaluación de Cáncer terapia cuello uterino cáncer, aplicado antes, 14 días después y al final del tratamiento, en aproximadamente 35 días. Los análisis se realizaron utilizando el modelo lineal generalizado mixto, con una matriz de covarianza autorregresiva de orden 1, y la significación fue confirmada por la prueba de Sidak. Resultados: hubo una diferencia estadísticamente significativa para el grupo experimental en la calidad de vida física (p = 0,02), funcional (p = 0,00), síntomas específicos del cáncer de cuello uterino y efectos del tratamiento (p = 0,03) y en general (p = 0,02).). Conclusión: La Relajación por Imagen Guiada contribuyó a mejorar la Calidad de Vida Relacionada con la Salud de las pacientes con cáncer de cuello uterino durante el tratamiento con quimiorradioterapia. The Effect of Benson Relaxation Technique on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress of Jordanian Patients Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study

Depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) are common symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and are highly correlated with poor quality of life. Managing DAS among such patients can improve their quality of life (QoL), empowering them with improved autonomy, self-care, independency, and ability to perform daily activities. This study is aimed at examining the effectiveness of the Benson Relaxation Technique (BRT) on reducing DAS among patients diagnosed with MS in Jordan. This quasiexperimental study of 105 Jordanian patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis tested an intervention group (60 patients) who received BRT and a control group (45 patients) who received normal treatment. Data were collected from January 2021 to April 2021, using the Arabic version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21). The intervention group was instructed to perform the BRT two times a day for 10 minutes at home for eight weeks at two specific times, with 7-8-hour intervals between each episode. STROBE guidelines were followed in reporting the review. At the baseline comparison, there was no statistical difference between the interventional and control groups with regard to DAS. The levels of DAS between the two groups after three months of the last sessions of the intervention (postintervention) were compared. The results showed that the intervention group had significantly lower levels of DAS compared to the control group. The levels of the DAS were significantly lower for the intervention group postintervention. Adding relaxation techniques to the therapeutic routine is a cost-effective complementary treatment to decrease DAS among MS patients and improve their QoL. Relevance to Practice. This study provides a baseline of data that could facilitate further investigations in the future to improve the quality of services delivered to such patients and thus their QoL and satisfaction.

Functional and self-care capacity of people with multiple sclerosis

Objective:

describe the self-care and functionality levels of patients with multiple sclerosis and determine whether sociodemographic, clinical and functional variables interfere with self-care and/or functionality.

Method:

correlational, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach performed with individuals in outpatient follow-up. We collected sociodemographic and clinical data and applied the Appraisal of Self-care Agency Scale, the Barthel index, the Lawtton and Brody Scale, and the instrument to investigate the performance in Advanced Activities of Daily Living. We performed descriptive and inferential analysis.

Results:

most patients were classified as “having self-care” (82.14%); with moderate dependence (51.19%) for the basic activities of daily living, partial dependence for the instrumental activities of daily living (55.95%), and more active for the advanced activities of daily living (85.71%). Patients with longer disease duration had a higher number of disabilities and, in those with better socioeconomic and educational profile, the functionality was better.

Conclusion:

disease duration was strongly correlated with a higher number of disabilities and better socioeconomic and educational profiles showed to be protective factors for functionality. Care planning should consider the needs observed by the multidisciplinary team, stimulating the development of self-care, functionality and sociability.

The Effect of Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Stress, Anxiety, and Depression of Women with Multiple Sclerosis

Background:

One of the factors that could influence the quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis, which is usually overlooked, is its psychological aspects. Considering the increasing acceptance of complementary medicine in the health system, this study was designed and conducted to determine the effect of group cognitive therapy on the stress, anxiety, and depression of women suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Materials and Methods:

This clinical trial was conducted among 70 women suffering from multiple sclerosis who were referred to the health centers of Isfahan. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups of intervention and control, each containing 35 patients. The intervention group received cognitive behavioral therapy as 8 90-minute group sessions (a session per week), and the control group participated in 4 group sessions to express their feelings and experiences. Data were gathered using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-24).

Results:

There was a significant difference between the mean score of stress (P = 0.03), anxiety (P = 0.02), and depression (P = 0.03) of the intervention and the control group immediately after and 1 month after the intervention. Least squares difference test showed that the mean score of stress (P = 0.02), anxiety (P = 0.02), and depression (P = 0.03) immediately and 1 month after the intervention was significantly lower in the intervention group.

Conclusions:

According to the results of the present study, cognitive behavioral therapy could decrease stress, anxiety, and depression in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.
