Nitrogen and phosphorus flux from the production of Nile tilapia through the application of environmental indicators

Nitrogen demand and agro-environmental efficiency in Brazilian cereal production

This paper aims to analyze the main factors that explain the demand for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers in Brazil, as well as the efficiency of their use. In addition, the research sought to relate the use of fertilizers with nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Demand was estimated using the two-stage least squares method (2SLS). Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was calculated using an agri-environmental index. The results indicated that demand of nitrogen fertilizers is positively affected by the price of cereal, cereal production and the number of fertilizers used in the past harvest. The calculated NUE presented an average value of 53% in the 1994-2018 period, indicating inefficient use of N. Emissions from nitrogen fertilization grew 59% for the same period. The increasing and / or inadequate rates of fertilizer use have resulted in agro-environmental inefficiency, that is, a decrease in NUE and an increase in N2O emissions. Public policies that guarantee more agricultural technical assistance and rational alternative forms of nitrogen use could contribute to optimizing the synthetic doses applied in production, minimizing adverse environmental effects without generating economic losses to farmers and Brazilian agricultural production.

Effects of Feeding Frequency for Nile Tilapia Fingerlings (Oreochromis niloticus)

This study is aimed at assessing the feeding frequency for tilapia fingerlings. 240 fishes were randomly distributed in 24 containers. The feeding consisted of six frequencies: 4 (F4), 5 (F5), 6 (F6), 7 (F7), 8 (F8), and 9 (F9) times a day. The weight gain was significantly higher in F5 and F6 when compared to F4 (p = 0.0409 and 0.0306, respectively). Feed intake and apparent feed conversion did not differ between treatments (p = 0.129 and p = 0.451). About water quality, the nitrogen levels in the water from the treatments differed between F4 and F5 (p = 0.0478) and F4 and F6 (p = 0.0283) and for P between F4 and F6 (p = 0.0215) and F4 and F9 (p = 0.0432). The x ² test showed a dependence relationship between feed frequencies and the muscle fibers frequency (p < 22 × 10^-17), prevailing fibers between 10-20 micrometers in F4, F5, F6, and F7 and 30-40 in F8 and F9. The area of the hepatocytes differed only between F5 and F9, while the nucleus area did not. Partial net revenue differed in 10% between F5 and F4 (p = 0.0812) and between F6 and F4 (p = 0.0568). In conclusion, fingerlings fed 5 to 6 times a day have better zootechnical and partial recipes.

Recycling phosphorus and calcium from aquaculture waste as a precursor for hydroxyapatite (HAp) production: a review

Water contaminated with phosphorus needs to be managed efficiently to ensure that clean water sources will be preserved. Aquaculture plays an essential role in supplying food and generating high revenue. However, the quantity of phosphorus released from aquaculture effluents is among the major concerns for the environment. Phosphorus is a non-renewable, spatially concentrated material essential for global food production. Phosphorus is also known as a primary source of eutrophication. Hence, phosphorus recovery and separation from different wastewater streams are mandatory. This paper reviews the source of phosphorus in the environment, focusing on aquaculture wastewater as a precursor for hydroxyapatite formation evaluates the research progress on maximizing phosphorus removal from aquaculture wastewater effluents and converting it into a conversion. Shrimp shell waste appears to be an essential resource for manufacturing high-value chemicals, given current trends in wealth creation from waste. Shrimp shell waste is the richest source of calcium carbonate and has been used to produce hydroxyapatite after proper treatment is reviewed. There have been significant attempts to create safe and long-term solutions for the disposal of shrimp shell debris. Through the discussion, the optimum condition of the method, the source of phosphorus, and the calcium are the factors that influence the formation of hydroxyapatite as a pioneer in zero-waste management for sustainability and profitable approach. This review will provide comprehensive documentation on resource utilization and product development from aquaculture wastewater and waste to achieve a zero-waste approach.
