Phylogenetic niche conservatism and plant diversification in South American subtropical grasslands along multiple climatic dimensions

The phylogeographic journey of a plant species from lowland to highlands during the Pleistocene

Phylogeographic history refers to how species evolve and diversify in response to historical, ecological, and demographic factors. The climate fluctuation during the Pleistocene period marked a crucial time in shaping many species' distribution and genetic structure, particularly those from southern South American grasslands. This work investigated the phylogeographic history of a highland grassland, Petunia altiplana T. Ando & Hashim. (Solanaceae), its diversity, and geographic distribution using a population genomic approach based on RAD-seq data. Our results indicated that, during the Pleistocene, when the grasslands expanded to highlands, the lowland populations of P. altiplana reached the higher open fields, enlarging their geographic distribution. We found that the P. altiplana genetic diversity followed the geographic division into eastern (E) and western (WE) population groups, with a subtle division in the E group regarding the Pelotas River headwater. The results also showed that isolation by distance was the main divergence pattern, with elevation playing a pivotal role in shaping WE and E groups. Our findings indicated that lowland-adapted populations quickly colonized highlands during the late Pleistocene.

Isotopic niches do not follow the expectations of niche conservatism in the bird genus Cinclodes

Phenotypic traits are expected to be more similar among closely related species than among species that diverged long ago (all else being equal). This pattern, known as phylogenetic niche conservatism, also applies to traits that are important to determine the niche of species. To test this hypothesis on ecological niches, we analysed isotopic data from 254 museum study skins from 12 of the 16 species of the bird genus Cinclodes and measured stable isotope ratios for four different elements: carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. We find that all traits, measured individually, or as a composite measurement, lack any phylogenetic signal, which in turn suggests a high level of lability in ecological niches. We compared these metrics to the measurements of morphological traits in the same genus and found that isotopic niches are uniquely evolutionarily labile compared to other traits. Our results suggest that, in Cinclodes, the realized niche evolves much faster than expected by the constraints of phylogenetic history and poses the question of whether this is a general pattern across the tree of life.

More time for aliens? Performance shifts lead to increased activity time budgets propelling invasion success

In the Grinnellian niche concept, the realized niche and potential distribution is characterized as an interplay among the fundamental niche, biotic interactions and geographic accessibility. Climate is one of the main drivers for this concept and is essential to predict a taxon’s distribution. Mechanistic approaches can be useful tools, which use fitness-related aspects like locomotor performance and critical thermal limits to predict the potential distribution of an organism. These mechanistic approaches allow the inclusion key ecological processes like local adaptation and can account for thermal performance traits of different life-history stages. The African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis, is a highly invasive species occurring on five continents. The French population is of special interest due to an ongoing expansion for 40 years and a broad base of knowledge. We hypothesize that (1) the French population exhibits increased activity time in the invasive European range that could be devoted to fitness-relevant activity and (2) tadpoles may have less activity time available than adult frogs from the same range. We investigate how thermal performance traits translate into activity time budgets and how local adaptation and differences in the thermal responses of life-history stages may boost the European Xenopus invasion. We use a mechanistic approach based on generalized additive mixed models, where thermal performance curves were used to predict the hours of activity and to compare the potential activity time budgets for two life-history stages of native and invasive populations. Our results show that adult French frogs have more activity time available in Europe compared to South African frogs, which might be an advantage in searching for prey or escaping from predators. However, French tadpoles do not have more activity time in Europe compared to the native South African populations suggesting that tadpoles do not suffer the same strong selective pressure as adult frogs.

Spawning substrate shift associated with the evolution of a female sexual characteristic in a family of fishes

Because ‘primary’ sexual characteristics (i.e. those directly associated with reproduction) can be extremely variable, evolve quickly, and can be impacted by both natural and sexual selection, they are often considered excellent model systems in which to study evolution. Here, we explore the evolution of the anal sheath, a trait hypothesized to facilitate the release and proper placement of eggs on the spawning substrate, and its relationship to spawning habitat and maximum body size in a family of fish (Fundulidae). In addition to using phylogenetically informed statistics to determine the role of preferred spawning habitat and maximum body size on the evolution of anal sheath length, we reconstruct the evolutionary history of the anal sheath and preferred spawning habitat. We then test for significant phylogenetic signal and evolutionary rate shifts in the size of the anal sheath and the preferred spawning habitat. Our results indicate that preferred spawning habitat, and not maximum body length, significantly influences anal sheath size, which is associated with a significant phylogenetic signal, and an evolutionary rate similar to that of preferred spawning substrate. We discuss these results in terms of potential evolutionary mechanisms driving anal sheath length.
