Weight and morphometric growth of Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), Tambaqui (Colossoma macropumum) and their hybrids from spring to winter

Dynamics of Growth in Purebred Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), and Their Reciprocal Hybrids, under Varied Feeding Programs: Insights from Nonlinear Models

We evaluated the growth performance of pacu and tambaqui and their reciprocal hybrids (tambacu and paqui) under different feeding programs. We raised 30 individuals from each species and their respective crosses, distributing them into three replicate cages with 10 individuals each. Throughout the 5-month experimental period, the fish were weighed six times while exposed to diverse feeding regimens involving three commercial diets with varying combinations of crude protein (CP) levels: 24%, 28%, and 32%. Growth curves were adjusted using nonlinear models. The evaluation period was insufficient for adjusting the logistic model for the tambaqui and paqui treatments with the highest initial protein intake. Pure pacu had a higher (p < 0.05) growth rate (k = 0.0185) than in the tambacu hybrid (k = 0.0134) and proved to have an early performance since animals from this group reached their weight at inflection faster. Despite growing more slowly, tambacu reached a higher (p < 0.05) final weight (A = 1137.12) than in the pacu (A = 889.12). Among the feeding programs, animals that received less CP showed greater growth potential; however, longer evaluation is important to verify if the initial CP intake has no significant positive effect on fish growth.

Morphometric Evaluations and Yields from Commercial Cuts of Black Pacu Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) in Different Body Weights

For the Amazon, it is important to encourage the production of native fish, since there are several species of zootechnical interest. For this, it is necessary to know the species since its acquisition, production, processing, and marketing. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the yield, correlations, and profitability of different cuts of black pacu (Colossoma macropomum) in five weight categories. Data from 220 black pacus were obtained, with a weight range of 2725 ± 1975 g. Yields of commercial cuts and morphometric measurements were evaluated in five weight classes. Kruskal–Wallis test (α = 0.05) was used to compare the average income. And, to verify the correlation between the morphometric measures and the yields, Spearman's correlation was performed (α = 0.05). To obtain the profit of the weight classes due to the cut produced, an economic analysis was carried out considering the cost of buying the fish. Yields of fillet, ribs, and steak were higher in classes 3 and 4, while in the same classes, the yield of residues was the lowest. Despite classes 1, 2, and 5 showing lower yields, the economic analysis presented that the production of fillet and ribs was profitable. The measures of total length and standard length have a high positive correlation with the yield of meat in all classes, as well as the average circumference and caudal circumference in classes 1, 2, and 4, which can be used to determine the yields of this commercial cut.

Transaminase profile and hepatic histopathological traits in Piaractus mesopotamicus exposed to insecticide Diflubenzuron

Diflubenzuron (DFB) is a widely used insecticide to control ectoparasites in fish farming. Although therapeutic concentrations (i.e., 50 to 100 mg/L) are safe as they fail to induce mortality, they can promote tissue changes. In Brazil, Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is a native species used for commercial production, and it remains crucial to determine underlying mechanisms to mitigate the potential effects of pathogens on productivity. The aim of this study was to analyze the transaminase profile and histopathological changes in the liver of P. mesopotamicus exposed to a DFB bath. Hence, the fish were exposed to an immersion bath containing a 70 mg/L nominal concentration of Difluchem 240 SC® (24% (m/m) DFB) for 30 (n = 10), 60 (n = 10), and 120 min (n = 10), every 24 h for 3 days. Following exposure, plasma transaminases and liver histology were analyzed. In DFB-exposed fish, levels of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) were elevated when compared with the control at 30 and 60 min. Furthermore, liver morphology was altered based on exposure times. Compared with controls, the degree of reversible damage (degree of tissue change (DTC)) demonstrated high scores for all exposure times, with no difference between individual groups. Irreversible changes were increased in the 60 and 120-min baths. These findings highlight the impact of the therapeutic DFB concentration (i.e., 70 mg/L), revealing that 60-min and 120-min bathing induces irreversible and progressive hepatic changes.
