Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have found associations between periodontitis and various types of cancer. Since the site of head and neck cancer (HNC) has contiguity or proximity to the oral cavity, it may be particularly influenced by oral inflammation. This study aimed to determine whether HNC patients have poor oral health as compared to those with other types of cancer. METHODS This study retrospectively examined oral environmental factors including periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA), a new periodontal inflammatory parameter. A total of 1030 cancer patients were divided into the HNC (n = 142) and other cancer (n = 888) groups. Furthermore, the HNC group was divided into high (n = 71) and low (n = 71) PISA subgroups, and independent risk factors affecting a high PISA value were investigated. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that number of missing teeth (odds ratio 1.72, 95% CI 1.15-2.56, P < 0.01), PISA (odds ratio 1.06, 95% CI 1.03-1.06, P < 0.05), and oral bacterial count (odds ratio 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.03, P < 0.01) were independent factors related to HNC. In addition, multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that current smoker (odds ratio 7.51, 95% CI 1.63-34.71, P < 0.01) and presence of untreated dental caries (odds ratio 3.33, 95% CI 1.23-9.00, P < 0.05) were independent risk factors affecting high PISA values in HNC patients. CONCLUSION HNC patients have higher levels of gingival inflammation and poor oral health as compared to patients with other types of cancer, indicating that prompt oral assessment and an effective oral hygiene management plan are needed at the time of HNC diagnosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Perioperative oral management (POM) was introduced into the Japanese universal health insurance system in 2012. Collaboration with dental clinics is important for hospitals without a dentistry department. A dental hygienist newly assigned as a member of the patient flow management centre led a seminar to promote collaboration via the web. This study represents the first step to explore the possible role of the hospital-based dental hygienist in the field of regional medical-dental cooperation of POM by assessing their willingness to participate in providing this type of care by a survey. METHODS The rate of attendees' satisfaction and the current problems of the collaboration for POM were evaluated through a questionnaire survey after the web seminar. RESULTS All respondents reported satisfaction with the web seminar although it was the first experience of an online seminar for half of the respondents. All hospital dentists, but only 47.8% of dentists working at clinics, had participated in POM. Dental hygienist tended to show greater desire to participate in POM than dentists. All respondents appreciated the role played by the dental hygienist as a key manager of medical-dental collaboration between the hospital and local clinics. CONCLUSION The hospital-based dental hygienist can play a role in planning and management of web seminars for POM, to raise awareness and promote regional medical-dental cooperation of POM.

Abstract
The oral cavity represents the gateway to the complex digestive system, so the knowledge of the exact mechanisms that link them is vitally important. Recently, oral and dental pathologies have been studied as potential risk factors for pathologies linked to lifestyle habits. Therefore, it could be considered as an interesting preventive way. We conducted a narrative review with a thorough bibliographic search on MEDLINE and SCOPUS, including international studies related to oral healthcare and gastrointestinal neoplasms, published between 2015 and 2020. The primary aim of this revision is to analyze the association between oral healthcare and carcinogenic gastrointestinal processes, providing a possible future preventive strategy for dental care. Moreover, we intend to raise awareness about the importance of oral healthcare as a new paradigm and study variable in the global health care system.

Abstract
Emerging evidences link gut microbiota to colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation and development. However, the CRC stage- and spatial-specific bacterial taxa were less investigated, especially in a Chinese cohort, leading to our incomplete understanding of the functional roles of gut microbiota in promoting CRC progression and recurrence. Here, we report the composition and structure of gut microbiota across CRC stages I, II and III, by analyzing the gut mucosal microbiomes of 75 triplet-paired samples collected from on-tumor, adjacent-tumor and off-tumor sites and 26 healthy controls. We observed tumor-specific pattern of mucosal microbiome profiles as CRC progressed and identified ten bacterial taxa with high abundances (>1%) as potential biomarkers for tumor initiation and development. Peptostreptococcus and Parvimonas can serve as biomarkers for CRC stage I. Fusobacterium, Streptococcus, Parvimonas, Burkholderiales, Caulobacteraceae, Delftia and Oxalobacteraceae can serve as biomarkers for CRC stage II, while Fusobacterium, Burkholderiales, Caulobacteraceae, Oxalobacteraceae, Faecalibacterium and Sutterella can serve as biomarkers for CRC stage III. These biomarkers classified CRC stages I, II and III distinguished from each other with an area under the receiver-operating curve (AUC) > 0.5. Moreover, co-occurrence and co-excluding network analysis of these genera showed strong correlations in CRC stage I, which were subsequently reduced in CRC stages II and III. Our findings provide a reference index for stage-specific CRC diagnosis and suggest stage-specific roles of Peptostreptococcus, Fusobacterium, Streptococcus and Parvimonas in driving CRC progression.

Abstract
The association between oral health and systemic disease is recognized in the literature. The present study aimed to clarify the association between oral bacteria on the tongue dorsum and factors associated with oral health and systemic disease in middle-aged and elderly patients. The association between bacterial numbers, oral health status and systemic disease was preliminarily investigated in 70 patients (mean age, 69.5 years; range, 45-92 years) who visited the Department of Oral Health, Hiroshima University Hospital (Hiroshima, Japan). The bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene was employed to quantitate bacterial numbers using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR was also performed to detect the DNA of periodontal disease-related bacteria. Oral bacterial numbers were marginally negatively correlated with moisture levels on the tongue surface [Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (R)=-0.131, P=0.28). Subjects with bleeding on probing (BOP) or a ≥4 mm probing depth (PD) exhibited higher Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis)-positive rates (50.0 and 51.1%, respectively) than those without BOP or a <4 mm PD (39.5 and 30.4%, respectively). Subjects with medical histories of hypertension, diabetes, stroke and heart disease exhibited a trend toward higher P. gingivalis-positive rates than those without such disorders. These findings indicated that the tongue moisture level may be associated with bacterial numbers on the tongue surface, while P. gingivalis on the tongue surface may be associated with systemic and periodontal diseases. Further investigation in a larger number of participants is necessary to clarify the correlation between bacterial numbers and systemic disease.
