Abstract
(1) Background: This cross-sectional investigation appreciated the role of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), several hematologic-cell markers, and salivary inflammation-related molecules [calprotectin (S100A8/A9), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), kallikrein] to predict periodontitis in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD), arrhythmia, or both. Also, we appreciated the relationship between the inflammatory burden and periodontal destruction with the type of cardiac pathology. (2) Methods: Demographic, behavioral characteristics, periodontal indicators, blood parameters, and saliva samples were collected. (3) Results: All 148 patients exhibited stage II or III/IV periodontitis. Stage III/IV cases exhibited significantly increased S100A8/A9 levels (p = 0.004). A positive correlation between S100A8/A9 and IL-1β [0.35 (<0.001)], kallikrein [0.55 (<0.001)], and CRP [0.28 (<0.001)] was observed. Patients with complex cardiac involvement had a significantly higher number of sites with attachment loss ≥ 5 mm [19 (3-30)] compared to individuals with only arrhythmia [9 (3.25-18)] or ACVD [5 (1-12)] [0.048♦ {0.162/0.496/0.14}]. (4) Conclusions: Severe, extensive attachment loss may be indicative of patients with complex cardiac conditions, which underscores the essential role of periodontal status in relation to systemic diseases. The correlations between the rising trends of the inflammatory parameters suggest a potential interconnection between oral and systemic inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontitis is a chronic oral inflammatory disease that seriously affects people's quality of life. The purpose of our study was to investigate the correlation between the systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and periodontitis by utilizing a large national survey. This will establish a reference for the early identification and management of periodontitis. METHODS This study comprised the adult US population who participated in a national periodontitis surveillance project during the six years from 2009 to 2014. Through the utilization of univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression, we investigated the correlation between the systemic immune inflammation index and periodontitis. Additionally, we employed sensitivity analyses to evaluate the robustness of our findings. RESULTS The study involved 10,366 participants with an average age of 51.00 years, of whom 49.45% were male (N = 5126) and 50.55% were female (N = 5240). The prevalence of periodontitis is estimated to be about 38.43% in the US adults aged 30 or older population. Our logistic regression models indicated a positive association between a SII higher than 978 × 109/L and periodontitis. The elder group (aged 50 or older) with SII higher than 978 × 109/L demonstrated a significant correlation with periodontitis in the fully adjusted model (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.409, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.037, 1.915, P = 0.022). However, there is no statistical difference among adults aged 30 to 50. The robustness of our findings was confirmed through sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights that SII is associated with periodontitis in a nationally representative sample of US adults. And the SII is significantly associated with a high risk of periodontitis in individuals aged 50 or older.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of delta neutrophil index (DNI) on non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT), whose role has been documented in the pathogenesis and follow-up of periodontal disease. METHODS AND MATERIALS The study included 35 patients with stage 3, grade A periodontitis (test group) and 35 patients without periodontal disease (control group). Initially, periodontal parameters were recorded and blood samples were taken from all patients. For patients with periodontitis, periodontal parameter measurements and blood sample analyses were repeated 3 months after NSPT. RESULTS After NSPT, DNI, CRP (C-reactive protein), neutrophil count, WBC (white blood cell), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values decreased in the test group, but did not reach a statistically significant level (p > 0.05). When the inflammatory variables were examined, significantly higher CRP, IG (immature granulocytes), DNI, neutrophil count, and WBC were observed in the test group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). In the test group, periodontal parameters were lower 3 months after NSPT than at baseline (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Consistent with previous findings in the literature, the patients with periodontitis were determined to have higher levels of DNI, CRP, neutrophils, and WBC, compared to the individuals without periodontitis. Although a decrease was seen in DNI after NSPT, this was not at a significant level. CLINICAL RELEVANCE DNI is a guide in the evaluation of inflammation at the onset of periodontal disease, but studies with a larger number of cases are needed to use these parameters in the evaluation of treatment success. Abstract
(1) Background: Our study aimed to assess the association between the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to leukocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and periodontitis. (2) Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS databases, identifying observational studies. The Newcastle Ottawa scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. The principal summary outcome measure in our random effects meta-analysis was the mean difference (MD). (3) Results: After screening 682 search results, a total of 10 studies including 3164 subjects were selected for quantitative assessment. We found a higher mean NLR, PLR, and LMR in the periodontitis group compared to the control group (0.41 (95% CI 0.12–0.7), p = 0.006; 7.43 (95% CI 0.31–14.54), p = 0.04; 2.05 (95% CI 0.27–3.83), p = 0.024). No differences were observed for RDW. (4) Conclusions: We found an association between NLR, LMR, and PLR and periodontitis, which might be thought of as emerging blood cell count inflammatory biomarkers that could shed light on the link between periodontitis and systemic disbalances, as well as for periodontitis prognosis and grading.

Abstract
Recent advances in periodontal studies have attracted the attention of researchers to the relation between oral cells and gum diseases, which is a real threat to overall human health. Among various microfabrication technologies, Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors (CMOSs) enable the development of low-cost integrated sensors and circuits for rapid and accurate assessment of living cells that can be employed for the early detection and control of periodontal diseases. This paper presents a CMOS capacitive sensing platform that can be considered as an alternative for the analysis of salivatory cells such as oral neutrophils. This platform consists of two sensing electrodes connected to a read-out capacitive circuitry designed and fabricated on the same chip using Austria Mikro Systeme (AMS) 0.35 µm CMOS process. A graphical user interface (GUI) was also developed to interact with the capacitive read-out system and the computer to monitor the capacitance changes due to the presence of saliva cells on top of the chip. Thanks to the wide input dynamic range (IDR) of more than 400 femto farad (fF) and high resolution of 416 atto farad (aF), the experimental and simulation results demonstrate the functionality and applicability of the proposed sensor for monitoring cells in a small volume of 1 µL saliva samples. As per these results, the hydrophilic adhesion of oral cells on the chip varies the capacitance of interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). These capacitance changes then give an assessment of the oral cells existing in the sample. In this paper, the simulation and experimental results set a new stage for emerging sensing platforms for testing oral samples.
