Abstract
BACKGROUND Employee mental health is linked with job satisfaction and productivity. However, there is a notable lack of empirical evidence regarding the adverse effects of Hazardous Work Environments (HWE) on employee mental health, indicating a significant gap in occupational health research. METHODS Data from the China Family Panel Studies involving 9972 participants were utilized. Mental health was assessed using the Kessler 6 Psychological Distress Scale at baseline and the 8-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale at follow-up. Associations between HWE exposure and mental health were explored cross-sectionally at baseline plus mediation analyses for the influence of sleep duration. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess the longitudinal implications of HWE exposure. FINDINGS Participants exposed to HWE showed a higher risk of having serious psychological distress (OR (95%CI): 1.47 (1.29-1.69)) cross-sectionally at baseline, and this risk rose with increased number of HWE elements (1.30 (1.11-1.52) and 2.18 (1.75-2.72) for 1-2 and ≥ 3 elements, respectively). Longitudinally, HWE exposure was associated with an increased risk of depression (HR (95%CI): 1.10 (1.07-1.14)). Similarly, this risk risen with increased number of HWE elements (1.08 (1.06-1.09) and 1.20 (1.05-1.38) for 1-2 and ≥ 3 elements, respectively) and longer duration of exposure (1.01 (1.00-1.01)). Short sleep duration emerged as a significant mediator between HWE exposure and psychological distress. INTERPRETATION This study illuminates a robust association between HWE exposure and psychological distress, especially under prolonged and multiple exposures. We advocate for rigorous mental health monitoring and interventions for workers in adverse working environments. FUNDING CSTB2023NSCQ-BHX0042 and cffkyqdj.

Abstract
There is a substantial need for the development of biomaterials for protecting hematopoietic stem cells and enhancing hematopoiesis after radiation damage. Bacterial exopolysaccharide (EPS) has been shown to be very attractive to researchers as a radioprotectant owing to its high antioxidant, anti-cancer, and limited adverse effects. In the present study, we isolated EPS from a novel strain, Deinococcus radiodurans BRD125, which produces EPS in high abundance, and investigated its applicability as a radioprotective biomaterial. We found that EPS isolated from EPS-rich D. radiodurans BRD125 (DeinoPol-BRD125) had an excellent free-radical scavenging effect and reduced irradiation-induced apoptosis. In addition, bone-marrow and spleen-cell apoptosis in irradiated mice were significantly reduced by DeinoPol-BRD125 administration. DeinoPol-BRD125 enhanced the expression of hematopoiesis-related cytokines such as GM-CSF, G-GSF, M-CSF, and SCF, thereby enhancing hematopoietic stem cells protection and regeneration. Taken together, our findings are the first to report the immunological mechanism of a novel radioprotectant, DeinoPol-BRD125, which might constitute an ideal radioprotective and radiation mitigating agent as a supplement drug during radiotherapy.

Abstract
Radiological therapy/examination is the primary source of artificial radiation exposure in humans. While its application has contributed to major advances in disease diagnosis and treatment, ionizing radiation exposure is associated with ovarian damage. The use of natural products, either alone or as an adjunct, has become increasingly common for reducing the side effects of radiological therapy during disease treatment. Herein, we explored the protective effect of folic acid (FA), a widely used B vitamin, against radiation-induced ovarian injury and its mechanism of action. Female mice with normal ovarian function were randomly divided into control, FA, radiation, and radiation + FA groups. The intervention strategy included daily intragastric administration of FA (5 mg/kg) for 3 weeks prior to radiation exposure. Mice in the radiation and radiation + FA groups received a single dose of 5 Gy X-ray irradiation. Changes in the estrous cycle were then recorded, and ovarian tissues were collected. Pathophysiological changes as well as reproductive and endocrine-related indexes were determined via H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and ELISA. The reproductive performance and emotional symptoms of animals were also monitored. Our results indicated that FA intervention effectively alleviated ovarian damage, leading to more regular estrous cycles, lesser impairment of follicular morphology and endocrine status, as well as greater germ cell preservation. Reduced levels of oxidative stress, inflammation, and enhanced DNA repair were associated these changes. FA pre-administration improved the reproductive performance, leading to higher pregnancy rates and greater litter sizes. Further, the anxiety levels of animals were significantly reduced. Our results indicate that FA pre-administration significantly alleviates radiation-induced ovarian damage in rodents, highlighting its potential as a protective strategy against radiation exposure in the female population.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the frequency of education, knowledge of radiation and workplace anxiety of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) workers and to analyze what type of words are used for anxiety with a text mining method. An original questionnaire survey was given to FDNPP workers, and a text mining method was used to extract information from free-entry fields. The questionnaires were collected from 1135 workers (response rate: 70.8%). It was found that when workers receive education on radiation, the increased knowledge helps to reduce their anxiety. Among the 1135 workers, 92 of 127 completed the free-entry field with valid entries. Seventy-one words were extracted by the text mining method. The words used differed depending on the degree of anxiety. The text mining method revealed information about the presence or absence of radiation anxiety and the subjects' working environment and background.
