Mechanical Properties of Nano-Crystalline Glass-Carbomer Cements Used in Dentistry

The main aim of this study was to assess the impact of the environment on the mechanical and tribological properties of glass-carbomer cements used in dentistry. The properties of the Glass Cements Polyalkene (GCP) Glass Fill material, belonging to glass-polyalkene cements, were tested after placing it in various environments: air, distilled water, artificial saliva simulating a neutral environment (pH = 7), and simulating inflammation (pH = 4). The research material included four samples and a two-year reference material. The analysis of volumetric consumption and the assessment of the impact of solubility on the stability of glass-carbomer cements were carried out using tribological measurements and Vickers hardness measurements. In addition, microstructural characterization of the materials was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that the lowest wear (0.04%), the most stable microstructure, and the lowest average hardness (21.52 HV 0.1) were exhibited by the material stored in artificial saliva simulating a neutral environment (pH = 7). The least stable microstructure and statistically the highest hardness (77.3 HV 0.1) was observed in the test sample, which was stored in air for two years and then in distilled water. The highest consumption (0.11%) was recorded in the case of cement placed in artificial saliva simulating inflammation (pH = 4). The results obtained in this study indicate specific trends in the influence of the environment in which the tested cement is located, such as air, distilled water, air/distilled water, artificial saliva simulating a neutral environment, and simulating inflammation, on its structure, hardness, and wear.

Fluoride release and surface roughness of a new glass ionomer cement: glass carbomer

Abstract Objective This study analyzed the fluoride release/recharge and surface roughness of glass carbomer compared to other encapsulated glass ionomer cements (GICs). Material and method The GICs tested were Glass Fill® (GC-GCP Dental), Riva Self Cure® (RS-SDI), Riva Light Cure® (RL-SDI), Equia Fil® (EF-GC Europe). The composite resin Luna® (LU-SDI) was used as control. Five samples of each material were prepared and kept in a humidifier for 24 hours (37 °C, 100% relative humidity). Fluoride release was measured in two times: before (T1: days 1, 2, 7, 14) and after topical application of fluoride (T2: days 15, 16, 21 and 28). The surface roughness was also measured in both times (T1: days 1 and 14; T2: days 15 and 28). All samples were submitted to a single topical application of acidulated fluoride phosphate (Fluor Care - FGM). Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's post-test (p <0.05) were used in the statistical analysis. Result Equia Fil presented the highest fluoride release in both evaluation periods, with a higher release in T1 (p <0.05). The other materials tested, including glass carbomer presented similar release in both periods (T1 and T2). Regarding surface roughness, no significant differences were observed in the interaction between the material × time factors (T1 and T2) (p=0.966). Conclusion The GICs tested presented fluoride release and recharge ability and showed no surface roughness increase by topical application of fluoride.

Avaliação de rugosidade, dureza e superfície dos cimentos de ionômero de vidro após diferentes sistemas de acabamento e polimento

Resumo Introdução A rugosidade de superfície é uma limitação que interfere nos desempenhos mecânico e estético do cimento de ionômero de vidro (CIV), sendo necessária a utilização de procedimentos para acabamento e polimento adequados às propriedades desse material. Objetivo Avaliar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de acabamento e polimento na rugosidade, dureza e superfície de restaurações realizadas com dois tipos de CIV. Material e método Foram utilizados 100 corpos de prova (CP), divididos em 10 grupos, de acordo com o tipo de CIV (convencional e modificado por resina) e o sistema de acabamento e polimento empregado [C-tira de poliéster (controle); PD-ponta diamantada; DA-discos abrasivos; PE-ponta Enhance; BM-broca multilaminada]. Após sete dias em água destilada, os CP foram avaliados em Microscópio Eletrônico de Varredura (MEV) e submetidos aos testes de rugosidade de superfície e microdureza Vickers. A análise estatística foi realizada com ANOVA dois fatores e pós-Teste de Tukey. Resultado A análise por MEV indicou superfície mais lisa no grupo BM em ambos os tipos de CIV. Quanto à rugosidade, observou-se diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0,05) entre grupos do CIV convencional, mas não houve diferença entre os tipos de CIV. Com relação à dureza, o CIV convencional apresentou melhores resultados que o modificado por resina. No fator materiais de acabamento e polimento, não se verificou diferença estatisticamente significativa, independentemente do tipo de CIV. Conclusão os grupos BM apresentaram melhores resultados ao MEV; o tipo de CIV não influenciou os valores de rugosidade; o tipo de polimento não influenciou a dureza.
