Abstract
AIM In-vitro evaluation of shear bond strength, mode of failure, and adaptation of fifth-generation (etch-and-rinse), seventh-generation,and eighth-generation self-etch dental adhesives to human dentin with or without diode-laser irradiation before photopolymerization. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-two extracted human maxillary premolar teeth were collected. The buccal and lingual surfaces of teeth were grounded until dentin was exposed. Test areas of 4 mm diameter were created on both surfaces of teeth to standardize the area of treatment. The samples were then randomly allocated into three groups (n = 24): Group 1 Adper Single Bond 2 Etch-and-Rinse; Group 2 Tetric-N-Bond Universal Self-Etch; Group 3 Prime and Bond Universal Self-Etch dental adhesives were used. Buccal surfaces (sub-groups 'a') of all specimens were irradiated with diode laser before photopolymerization of the adhesive material, and palatal surfaces (sub-groups 'b') were directly photopolymerized without prior diode laser irradiation and restored with composite resin. All specimens were thermocycled. Four specimens from each group were then subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis to examine the adaptation of adhesive to dentin, and the remaining 60 specimens were evaluated for shear bond strength tests, modes of failure at the adhesive-dentin interface, and values were recorded, tabulated, and used for data analysis. A one-way ANOVA test and the Student's t-test were used for statistical analysis. A P value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The mean shear bond strength for the groups was: Group 1a (13.96 MPa), 1b (14.95 MPa); Group 2a (10.06 MPa), 2b (10.30 MPa); Group 3a (12.03 MPa), and 3b (10.44 MPa). No statistically significant difference was seen among sub-groups 1a and 3a, 2a and 3a, 2b and 3b as P > 0.05. A significant difference was seen among sub-groups 1b and 3b (P<0.05), 1a and 2a, and 1b and 2b (P<0.01). CONCLUSION Adper Single Bond 2 without diode-laser irradiation before photopolymerization showed the highest shear bond strength, followed by Adper Single Bond 2 irradiated with diode laser before photopolymerization, with the maximum adaptation of dental adhesive to dentin compared to other adhesives used either with or without diode-laser irradiation.

Abstract
Context Adhesion to dentin remains a tough challenge due to its heterogeneous composition, complex histologic structure and high tubular content, warranting the need to investigate methods to improve the bond strength of the commonly used access restorative materials to pulp chamber dentin. Aims To evaluate the effect of dentin biomodification using 6.5% grape seed extract and a 980 nm diode LASER on the shear bond strength of resin-based bonded restoration to pulp chamber dentin. Methods and Materials Access cavities were prepared in 42 extracted human maxillary premolars, which were then sectioned in a buccolingual direction. The samples were serially immersed in 5.25% NaOCl for 40 minutes and 17% EDTA for 3 minutes and allocated into three groups: the control group, the group pre-treated with 6.5% grape seed extract (GSE) and the group pre-treated with a 980 nm diode light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (LASER). All the samples were restored with resin composites and subjected to shear bond strength testing using a universal testing machine. Statistical Analysis Used Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23 software. Results The mean shear bond strength was highest in the group pre-treated with GSE, followed by that pre-treated with diode LASER and finally in the control group. Conclusions Dentin biomodification using both chemical and physical agents such as grape seed extract and diode LASER was shown to improve the shear bond strength of resin composite endodontic access restorations to the pulp chamber dentin.

Abstract
This study aimed at comparing shear-bond strength (SBS) of different self-etching adhesive systems (Clearfil S3 Bond Plus, G-Premio BOND and IBond) to dentin without or with diode-laser irradiation before photo-polymerization and to determine the effect of storage and thermo-cycling on SBS of adhesive systems. METHODS The buccal surface of 84 extracted maxillary premolars was grounded to create flat surface. The specimens were allocated into 3 groups (n = 28) depending upon the adhesive systems, then each group was divided into two sub-group (I, II) (n = 14). After the placement of respective adhesive systems on the flat surface, adhesive system in group I was photo-polymerized immediately, while in group II, the adhesive systems were exposed to diode-laser before photo-polymerization. Composite cylinder (4 mm in diameter and 2 mm height) was built on the flat surface of each specimen. Then group I and II were divided into two sub-groups (n = 7) according to the storage time and thermo-cycling (1 day without thermo-cycling or 72 days with thermo-cycling) then all the specimens were stored in distilled water. The SBS was measured at the end of storage period. ANOVA, Duncan's Multiple Range Test and independent t-test "P ≤ 0.05" were used for data analysis. RESULTS G-premio BOND showed the highest mean value of SBS followed by Clearfil S3 Bond plus without significant difference between them, while IBond revealed the least mean value. Laser irradiation had positive effect on the bond-strength of all tested adhesive systems. The results also showed that the storage with thermo-cycling had negative effect on the bond-strength in groups without laser irradiation for all tested adhesive systems, while for groups with laser irradiation, the reduction in the bond-strength of all tested adhesive systems was not significant. CONCLUSION Diode-laser application prior to photo-polymerization of self-etch adhesive systems significantly increased the bond-strength to dentin and can increase the durability of composite adhesion.

Abstract
This review addresses the rationale of recurrent and/or residual caries associated with resin composite restorations alongside current strategies and evidence-based recommendations to arrest residual caries and restrain recurrent caries. The PubMed and MEDLINE databases were searched for composite-associated recurrent/residual caries focusing on predisposing factors related to materials and operator’s skills; patient-related factors were out of scope. Recurrent caries and fractures are the main reasons for the failure of resin composites. Recurrent and residual caries are evaluated differently with no exact distinguishment, especially for wall lesions. Recurrent caries correlates to patient factors, the operator’s skills of cavity preparation, and material selection and insertion. Material-related factors are significant. Strong evidence validates the minimally invasive management of deep caries, with concerns regarding residual infected dentin. Promising technologies promote resin composites with antibacterial and remineralizing potentials. Insertion techniques influence adaptation, marginal seal, and proximal contact tightness. A reliable diagnostic method for recurrent or residual caries is urgently required. Ongoing endeavors cannot eliminate recurrent caries or precisely validate residual caries. The operator’s responsibility to precisely diagnose original caries and remaining tooth structure, consider oral environmental conditions, accurately prepare cavities, and select and apply restorative materials are integral aspects. Recurrent caries around composites requires a triad of attention where the operator’s skills are cornerstones.

Abstract
Cavity disinfection becomes an important step before a dental restorative procedure. The disinfection can be obtained cleaning the dental cavity with antimicrobial agents before the use of adhesive systems. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review on the effect of different cavity disinfectants on restorations’ adhesion and clinical success. A search was carried out through the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science. In vitro and in situ studies reporting results on dentin bond strength tests, and clinical studies published until August 2020, in English, Spanish and Portuguese were included. The methodological quality assessment of the clinical studies was carried out using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Chlorhexidine could preserve adhesion to dentin. EDTA and ethanol had positive results that should be further confirmed. Given the significant lack of scientific evidence, the use of lasers, fluoridated agents, sodium hypochlorite, or other products as cavity disinfectants should be avoided. Chlorhexidine is a safe option for cavity disinfection with adequate preservation of adhesion to dentin. Moreover, future researches should be focused on the efficacy of these disinfectants against cariogenic bacteria and their best application methods.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the interaction of a MDP-based universal dentin bonding system (DBS) with Er, Cr: YSGG laser irradiation, measuring the microtensile bond strength to dentin over a six-month period. The experimental design involved three factors: DBS (Adper Scotchbond Universal; Clearfil SE Bond, Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose and Adper Single Bond 2), laser (Control and Er, Cr: YSGG), and time (initial- 7 days and 6 months). Eighty dentin samples from molars were prepared (n=10) with laser irradiation after primer and DBS application. After 7 days, were subjected to micro tensile bond strength test. The data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p<0.05). Both DBS and laser significantly affected the bonding performance and their interaction was statistically significant (p=0.0194). The self-etching mode of the MDP-based universal DBS maintained the bond strength on dentin irradiated with ER, Cr: YSGG after 6 months, while bonding with all other DBS deteriorated.

Abstract
Introduction The treatment of dental tissues before adhesive restorative procedures is an important step in the bonding protocol and determines the clinical success of restorations. Aim The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro the influence of diode laser on the shear bond strength of one- and two-step self-etch (SE) adhesives to dentin when the laser is applied over the adhesives before photopolymerization. Methodology About 20 freshly extracted noncarious intact maxillary premolars were collected, and the buccal and lingual surfaces of the tooth were ground with the help of diamond disk under water coolant till dentin was exposed. The specimens were divided into two groups of 10 each. Buccal surfaces of all the specimens were exposed to diode laser before light curing (test/experimental group) act as control group. In Group I, Clearfil SE with laser was used on the buccal surface, whereas in Group II, G-bond SE adhesive with laser was used on the buccal surface. Shear bond test was measured using an universal testing machine and the values were obtained in megapascals (MPa). Results P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. According to the results, it was found that the mean bond strength values of the laser-treated groups were significantly higher than groups not treated with laser. Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that mean bond strength Clearfil SE with and without laser was significantly higher than G-bond with and without laser values.

Abstract
Introduction: Some studies have shown that laser irradiation on unpolymerized adhesives can improve composite-dentin adhesion. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the diode laser (810 nm) on the microleakage of multi-mode adhesive systems at enamel and dentin margins of composite restorations. Methods: Classic class V boxes were prepared on 48 sound premolar teeth and randomly divided into 6 groups (n=16). In the control groups, Scotchbond Universal (SBC), G-Premio (GBC), and Ambar U (AMC) were used by a self-etch mode. In the test groups (SBL, GBL, ABL), the 810 nm diode laser was irradiated (1 W) for 10 seconds before the polymerization of the adhesive. The boxes were restored by the resin composite. After finishing and polishing, the samples were thermocycled (5°C to 55°C) for 1000 cycles and then immersed in 0.1% methylene blue dye (48 hours). Dye penetration through the gingival and occlusal margins was measured by Stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed at the 5% significance level using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Significant differences were found between the control and test groups (P < 0.05). The occlusal margins of the SBL and GBL groups and the cervical margin of the SBL group exhibited the lowest microleakage (P < 0.05). The AM control group showed maximum microleakage at cervical and occlusal margins. Conclusion: The irradiation of the 810 nm diode laser on the unpolymerized universal adhesive systems in a self-etch mode caused a significant reduction in enamel and dentin marginal microleakage of composite restorations.

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose was to compare shear bond strength (SBS), pulp temperature, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) in debonding of stainless steel brackets from enamel surface using neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser versus the conventional debonding method. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight extracted premolars were bonded to stainless steel brackets. The samples were divided into three experimental groups and one control group. In the first three groups, Nd:YAG laser was used for debonding with the power of 1, 1.5, and 2 W, respectively, for 10 seconds. The SBS and ARI of the samples were assessed. Pulp temperature was recorded before and after irradiation. Two samples from each group were used for determining enamel morphology after debonding using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The mean SBS in the groups was 33.05, 28.69, 24.37, and 31.53 MPa, respectively, with no statistically significant differences (P=0.205). Significant differences in post-irradiation temperature were noted among the lased groups (P=0.000). Debonding mainly occurred at the adhesive-enamel interface in the 1-W laser and control groups and at the bracket-adhesive interface in the 1.5-W and 2-W laser groups. Enamel structure was amorphous and irregular following laser irradiation. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the use of Nd:YAG laser could not significantly affect the SBS. Therefore, this laser would not be suitable for debonding of metal brackets. The use of a 2-W laser could significantly raise the pulpal temperature. Nd:YAG laser renders a more heterogeneous enamel morphology compared to conventional debonding methods.

Abstract
Background and aims Nowadays, studies show the effective laser irradiation role on the adhesion of bonding agents to the dentin. Therefore, the present study was set to find an appropriate protocol for the use of Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, and Diode lasers during the application of two steps self-etch adhesives in direct dental restorations in order to achieve higher microtensile strength. Materials and Methods A total number of 100 extracted healthy teeth were selected. After removing occlusal enamel and exposing dentin, samples randomly divided into ten groups: Group Control (C), two steps self-etch adhesives was applied in accordance with the manufacturer instructions, without using laser systems; Groups Er-YAG, laser (2940 nm, 10 Hz, 0.4w, 40 mJ) irradiated Before applying Primer (Er-BP subgroup), After applying Primer (Er-AP subgroup), After applying Bonding (Er-AB subgroup); Groups Nd-YAG, laser (1064 nm, 10 Hz, 1.2w, 40 mJ) irradiated Before applying Primer (Nd-BP subgroup), After applying Primer (Nd-AP subgroup), After applying Bonding (Nd-AB subgroup); Groups Diode, laser (940 nm, 10 Hz, 0.7w, 70 mJ) irradiated Before applying Primer (D-BP subgroup), After applying Primer (D-AP subgroup), After applying Bonding (D-AB subgroup). After intervention and composite build up, the samples were stored 24 hours in 37°C distilled water. The microtensile strength was measured using the universal testing machine. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA test and post hoc Tukey test. (p < 0.05). Results The Means and standard deviations of the groups were as follow: C = 30.09 ± 4.21, Er-BP = 18.83 ± 4.21, Er-AP = 14.43 ± 3.12, Er-AB = 19.67 ± 4.96, Nd-BP = 20.35 ± 5.55, Nd-AP = 39.85 ± 4.13, Nd-AB = 18.16 ± 3.36, D-BP = 26.74 ± 5.05, D-AP = 28.11 ± 5.12, D-AB = 37.28 ± 5.61. The mean microtensile strength achieved in groups: Nd-AP and D-AB were significantly higher than control group (p < 0.05). Groups D-BP and D-AP had no significant difference in comparison with control group while the remaining groups had significantly lower values (P < 0.05). Conclusions Nd:YAG laser irradiation after applying the primer, and diode laser irradiation after applying the bonding agent, both can improve the microtensile bond strength in two steps self-etch adhesive systems significantly.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bonding strength of non-simplified dentin bonding systems (DBS) to dentin irradiated with a diode laser (970 nm) immediately and after 12 months of water storage following either primer or bond application. Material and methods: The experimental design included three different factors: DBS type [AdperTM Scotchbond Multipurpose (MP) and Clearfil™ SE Bond (CSE)], irradiation [without irradiation - control (C), irradiation after primer application (AP), and irradiation after bond application (AB)], and time [initial (I) and after 12 months of water storage (12 m)]. Sixty sound human third molars (n = 10) were obtained, and their flat occlusal dentin areas were prepared and standardized. Laser irradiation was performed in the contact mode perpendicular to the dental surface over an automatically selected scanning area at a pulse energy of 0.8 W, frequency of 10 Hz, and energy density of 66.67 J/cm2. After 7 days of treatment, the specimens were cut, and half of them were subjected to microtensile testing (500 N/0.05 mm/min), whereas the remaining sticks were examined after 12 months of water storage. The obtained data were analyzed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a Tukey test (p<0.05). The observed fracture modes were investigated using a portable digital microscope with a magnification of 40x. Results: Among the utilized DBS, MP generally exhibited higher bond strengths, but did not always differ from CSE under similar conditions. The irradiation factor was statistically significant only for the MP/AB groups. After 12 months of storage, all groups demonstrated a significant reduction in the bond strength, whereas the results of fracture analysis showed a predominance of the adhesive type. Conclusions: The laser treatment of non-simplified DBS was not able to stabilize their bonding characteristics after 12 months.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin desensitizers may change the properties of smear layer and have adverse effects on the bonding performance of adhesive systems. AIM The aim of this study was to compare the effect of bioactive glass (BG), hydroxyapatite, and diode laser desensitization on shear bond strength of resin composites to dentin at different time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-two caries-free maxillary premolars were selected. Buccal surfaces were flattened to expose dentin. Teeth were divided into four groups (Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4) according to treatment modality (control with no pretreatment, Sensodyne Repair and Protect, Teethmate Desensitizer, diode laser). Bonding was performed using self-etch adhesive followed by composite buildup. Universal testing machine was used to determine shear bond strengths immediately after bonding, after 3 months, and 5 months storage in artificial saliva. RESULTS Pretreatment with BG and hydroxyapatite desensitizers increased, whereas diode laser decreased mean shear bond strength of composite to dentin as compared to control group. No statistical significant difference in shear bond strength values was seen in groups after storage. CONCLUSION Desensitizing toothpastes incorporating remineralizing agents not only occluded open dentinal tubules but also increased shear bond strength of composite to dentin.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the push out bond strength after treating the post space with different irrigation procedures. Study Design The study sample comprised of 60 recently extracted premolars. These teeth were placed in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution for 5 min and then washed under tap water. De-coronated samples were biomechanically prepared until F3 ProTaper and obturated using AH-Plus and 30# (6%) gutta-percha. The specimens were allowed to set for 24 h and then post space was prepared. The teeth were randomly assigned into three experimental groups based on the treatment technique: Group A - control, Group B - sodium hypochlorite and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and Group C - diode laser and EDTA. The samples were sectioned horizontally and push out bond strength was evaluated. The stereomicroscopic examination was done for evaluating the failure mode. One-way ANOVA variance followed by Tukey's post-hoc test was used for statistical analysis using SPSS software. Results Use of diode laser does not enhance the bond strength of fiber post. Conclusion Diode laser at a very low pulse can be used as an irrigant adjuvant to vaporize the cement residues. Using diode laser does not enhance the bond strength. EDTA as final irrigant increases the bond strength of fiber post.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity treatments are based on the physical obliteration of the dentinal tubules to reduce hydraulic conductance. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the hydraulic conductance of bovine root dentin after irradiation with a 980-nm diode laser, with or without associated fluoride varnish. METHODS Sixty bovine root dentin specimens were divided into six groups (n = 10 in each group): G1, G3, and G5 (0.5 W, 0.7 W, and 1 W diode laser, respectively); G2, G4, and G6 (fluoride varnish application + 0.5 W, 0.7 W, and 1 W diode laser, respectively). The dentin hydraulic conductance was evaluated at four time periods with a fluxmeter: 1) with smear layer, 2) after 37% phosphoric acid etching, 3) after the treatments, and 4) after 6% citric acid challenge. After the dentinal fluid flow measurements, specimens were also evaluated for mineral composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). RESULTS Analysis demonstrated a better result with increased irradiation power (P < 0.001), especially if the diode laser irradiation was associated with the application of fluoride varnish (P < 0.001), ensuring a greater reduction in permeability. Considering the groups treated only with laser irradiation, the 1 W group was superior when compared with the 0.5 W and 0.7 W irradiated groups immediately after treatment (P < 0.001). After citric acid testing, all groups showed similar results, except when comparing the 1 W groups with the 0.5 W groups (P = 0.04). EDS results of the irradiated groups showed an increase in the proportion of calcium and phosphorus ions, which demonstrates a superficial composition modification after laser treatments. CONCLUSION Laser irradiation of exposed dentin promoted significant reduction in the dentin hydraulic conductance, mainly with higher energy densities and association with fluoride varnish.
