Effectiveness of a multiple intervention programme for the prevention of falls in older adults persons from a University of the Third Age

"It was unusual but amazing": demand creation for PrEP among adolescents' men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Brazil

This study aimed to analyze the challenges in demand creation for participation in an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) project in two Brazilian capitals. This qualitative study was conducted with men who have sex with men and transgender women aged 15 to 19 years who lived in two Brazilian state capitals. For this analysis, 27 semi-structured interviews carried out from 2019 to 2020 were evaluated by reflexive thematic content analysis. For participants, PrEP demand creation was essential for their interaction, mediation, bonding, and attachment and proved effective for PrEP acceptability and adherence. Adolescents' narratives showed that the strategies promoted HIV combination prevention, opened up opportunities for recruitment meetings, helped to negotiate with and convince individuals to use PrEP, strengthened peer education, and evoked a feeling of "being with" and "walking together" despite the challenges. Face-to-face or online interactions using social technologies played a crucial role in recruiting adolescents for the project, expanding knowledge on PrEP and other combination prevention strategies and access to health services and self-care.

Speech therapy´s intervention for falling prevention in aging

PURPOSE

to verify the effectiveness of a Speech Therapy intervention program to decrease the risk of falls in elderly people.

METHODS

Exploratory and intervention study where upon 148 volunteers from community, both genders, with an average of 68.6(± 6.5) years were submitted to the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI)- Brazilian brief and the Timed Up and Go (TUG). Volunteers with or without potential risk for falling were invited to participate in a 50-minutes long intervention program carried out for five consecutive weeks, based on Cawthorne and Cooksey exercises. Seventy-two volunteers 68.1(±6.5) years presented in at least three meeting, were reassessed. The results were analyzed by Wilcoxon, Chi-square, Spearman and Correlation Matrix tests, with p≤5.0%.

RESULTS

Thirty-seven (25.0%) and 106 (71.6%) participants presented, respectively, risks for falls in the DGI-Brazilian brief and TUG. There was negative correlation between the DGI-Brazilian brief (p=0.034) and positive with the TUG (p=0.0071) with age and both instruments (p=0.00000016). Through the comparison the initial and final data a positive correlation was found for the DGI-Brazilian brief and for TUG in the Chi-square test and by Wilcoxon's. Better performance was observed in both tests after the intervention.

CONCLUSION

The intervention was effective in decreasing the risk for falls and improving gait performance, and functional and dynamic balance.

EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS FOR FALL PREVENTION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the effectiveness of educational interventions for fall prevention implemented in hospitals, at homes and nursing homes. Method: this is a systematic review, carried out based on the guiding question: what is the effectiveness of isolated educational interventions for preventing falls in adults and the elderly developed in experimental studies? The search took place in the electronic databases: Scopus, PubMed/PMC, Web of Science, CINAHL, SciELO, Cochrane and EMBASE. The exposure factor was the educational intervention on preventing falls, and as outcomes: reducing fall rates, improving knowledge, awareness and adherence to preventive care for adult and elderly patients. Only randomized controlled trials, in all languages and published between 2011 and 2020 were included. Results: 1,474 articles were identified, of which 16 were included. Four studies did not show effectiveness related to fall prevention. As common characteristics, these studies were carried out with elderly patients and without one-to-one follow-up. The others were effective in reducing falls and/or improving knowledge and were mostly studies with personalized interventions, carried out by nurses and mediated by educational technologies. Conclusion: educational interventions are effective for preventing falls in the home, hospital and nursing homes. Studies have shown a reduction in fall rates, improved knowledge and engagement in prevention strategies.
