Experiences of Advanced Health Assessment Simulation Based on the Education Needs of Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Students

There is an insufficient exploration of how simulation educational approaches improve the job performance of students in gerontological nurse practitioner (GNP) courses. To increase the effectiveness of simulation education in GNP courses, it is necessary to explore the advanced health assessment simulation curriculum. This study aimed to investigate GNP students' educational experiences with the advanced health assessment simulation program by reflecting the needs of GNPs. A qualitative study design was employed for this study; focus group interviews were conducted among eight GNP students who participated in this simulation program. The focus group interview identified three theme clusters: 'a high-fidelity simulator that reproduces a real-life setting', 'experience with standardized patients as a reference for normal older people', and 'application in the clinical field'. Through simulation education, GNP students were able to safely demonstrate knowledge and use what they learned for clinical practice. The development and utilization of simulation education for the GNP program would help to enhance the clinical competency of students.

Cenário simulado no ensino da visita domiciliar no âmbito da Atenção Primária à Saúde

Objetivo: relatar a experiência do uso da simulação, com a finalidade de , junto a estudantes de Enfermagem do primeiro ano da graduação, para o desenvolvimento das desenvolver as habilidades necessárias para a visita domiciliar, com estudantes de Enfermagem do primeiro ano da graduação. Descrição da experiência: a simulação em questão foi desenvolvida seguindo três etapas: briefing, cena e debriefing. A estratégia foi realizada na casa simulada, um laboratório que recria as condições do ambiente domiciliar. Nesse espaço, no qual o estudante vivencia a prática da visita domiciliar, antecipando possíveis dificuldades ou desafios. Os estudantes participaram ativamente da simulação. O debriefing oportunizou aos que os estudantes a expressão expressassem seus de sentimentos diante do cenário, a visualização visualizassem de sua a atuação e permitiu a reflexão refletissem sobre aspectos positivos relacionados ao desenvolvimento da atividade. Além disso, proporcionou uma autorreflexão de sobre tópicos que podem ser aprimorados. Considerações finais: a estratégia viabilizou uma atmosfera de ensino mais realística e aplicada, propiciando, aos estudantes, o desenvolvimento de habilidades de observação, comunicação e entrevista. A vivência simulada da primeira visita domiciliar pode instrumentalizar os estudantes para que eles identifiquem uma melhor identificação de as necessidades e potencialidades presentes nos indivíduos, nas famílias ou no domicílio, assim como façam uma e melhor integração dos entre os conteúdos teóricos e práticos.

Nursing Care for People with Chronic Diseases and Pulmonary Infection by Coronavirus: An Integrative Review

Objective: To identify the implications, for Nursing, of pulmonary infections by coronavirus in people with chronic non-communicable diseases and to propose actions for care. Materials and method: A literature review, with a search for primary studies in the Biblioteca Regional Virtual de Saúde, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, National Library of Medicine and Scopus databases, from March 15th to March 30th, 2020, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, in adults with chronic non-communicable diseases with respiratory infection by viruses of the coronavirus family, from 2010 to 2020. Results: A total of 11 articles were analyzed, which made it possible to identify guidelines for Nursing actions at the community and hospital levels and in critical care; among the care actions proposed for people with chronic diseases are education in health, encouragement to control the disease, immunization and lifestyle change, monitoring of suspected and confirmed cases, and use of masks in public environments. Conclusions: The study highlights the role of Nursing at all health care levels and the possibilities for learning and improving care actions through the use of evidence obtained from previous experiences.

Evaluation of an international program for nurse practitioner students

BACKGROUND

There are few opportunities for nurse practitioner (NP) students to develop relationships and exchange ideas with international counterparts. In addition, discovering differences in instructional pedagogy between programs is beneficial for every student.

PURPOSE

To facilitate an international understanding of health care services and compare curricula of advanced practice programs through an international experience for first year NP students from the United Kingdom and the United States.

METHODOLOGICAL ORIENTATION

The study used a qualitative analysis of responses from specified questions provided to both cohorts of students before and after the experience.

SAMPLE

A virtual global exchange between 23 advanced practice students and their professors in the spring of 2018 culminated in a trip by the UK students and faculty to the United States in April of that year.

CONCLUSIONS

The UK and US NP students positively evaluated the international encounter and pointed out specific educational activities that were most helpful to their training.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

International experiences offer NP students the opportunity to experience health care delivery in an alternative cultural milieu.

Surgical reconstitution of the perineum after delivery: a qualitative study of a pedagogical practice

A pedagogical activity with Master's Degree and Postgraduate students in Maternal Health and Obstetrics Nursing is described, applying principles of simulated practice in perineal suturing after delivery. This procedure causes a lot of insecurity and generates great anxiety in the students, when they start the internship in a delivery room.

OBJECTIVES

to develop the psychomotor skills in students for perineal surgical reconstruction; increase students' self-confidence to perform the procedure.

METHODOLOGY

qualitative, with 2 moments of data collection applied to two courses. Questionnaire with open questions, focus group session and filming. Content analysis of the answers to the questions and verbatim of the focus group.

RESULTS

a close relationship was observed between simulation and skills development.

CONCLUSION

the students emphasized the importance of the pedagogical activity in the acquisition of suturing skills, improving their self-confidence and reducing the initial anxiety. The use of the qualitative research allowed identifying the impact of the simulated practice on the development of the students' skills and to identify aspects to be improved, contributing to the progress of pedagogical practices.
