[Dental condiction of patients with temporomandibular dysfunction]

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the dental condition and the vertical dimension in patients with TMD, and the age and origin of the DTM.

METHODS

Was performed a descriptive study, observational, cross-sectional, with a sample of thirty patients with TMD, diagnosed by Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). This sample was determined based on estimates the service thus a sample of convenience. The association between gender, age, vertical dimension and dental condition with TMD were verified using the chi-square statistical test with 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS

It found that 26 patients were female and 4 males. Fifteen subjects presented aged below 36.5 years. How much the origin of the DTM, 19 subjects had articular disorder, and 11 muscle disorder. Has been determined that there was no statistically significant association between the independent variables with the DTM.

CONCLUSION

The etiological factors analyzed in isolation do not seem to influence in a unique way in the development of TMD, but may act together with other factors, because the cause is multifactorial.

Evaluation of vertical facial height reduction and severity of temporomandibular joint disorders using Shimbashi number and cephalometric analysis

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between vertical dimension at occlusion (VDO) and various grades of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) versus controls.Methods: Clinically measured Shimbashi number and radiographic cemento-enamel junction (CEJ-CEJ) measurements on 120 TMD patients and 40 controls were evaluated. Radiographic lateral cephalometric skull images of the patients were subjected to cephalometric analysis. The relationship between Shimbashi number, the cephalometric values, and its correlation with the degree of TMD were evaluated and statistically analyzed.Results: Shimbashi number and radiographic CEJ-CEJ values in the TMD patients were significantly lower than those in the controls. TMD severity appeared to increase with the increase in interincisal angle and the decrease in both Shimbashi number and radiographic CEJ-CEJ value.Conclusion: These findings indicate that radiographic evaluation of cephalograms is a reliable indicator of presence and degree of TMD, and the severity of TMD increases with the degree of reduction in VDO.

Evaluation of Cranio-cervical Posture in Children with Bruxism Before and After Bite Plate Therapy: A Pilot Project

[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a biteplate on the cranio-cervical posture of children with bruxism. [Subjects and Methods] Twelve male and female children aged six to 10 years with a diagnosis of bruxism participated in this study. The children used a biteplate during sleep for 30 days and were submitted to three postural evaluations: initial, immediately following placement of the biteplate, and at the end of treatment. Posture analysis was performed with the aid of the Alcimagem^® 2.1 program. Data analysis (IBM SPSS Statistics 2.0) involved descriptive statistics and the Student’s t-test. [Results] A statistically significant difference was found between the initial cranio-cervical angle and the angle immediately following placement of the biteplate. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the initial angle and the angle after one month of biteplate usage. [Conclusion] No significant change in the cranio-cervical posture of the children was found one month of biteplate usage. However, a reduction occurred in the cranio-cervical angle when the biteplate was in position.
