Brazilian research groups in nursing: comparison of 2006 and 2016 profiles

Analysis of evaluations performed by undergraduate nursing alumni: a Brazilian multicenter study

OBJECTIVE

To compare evaluations performed by undergraduate nursing alumni in three dimensions: sociodemographic characterization, identification and insertion into the job market, and professional training evaluation.

METHODS

Cross-sectional, quantitative, and multicenter study with alumni of three Brazilian public institutions. Data analysis was carried out according to the internal reliability of the used instrument and by applying descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

The participants were 446 alumni who obtained their degrees from 2013 to 2016. Most were women, white (44%) or brown (38%), and were between 25 and 30 years old. Most had a specialization degree or were studying to obtain one (54%), had a paid occupation (89%), and were employed by a single institution (60%), with the care area prevailing (57%) in the sample. High levels of satisfaction were found among alumni of two institutions in the evaluation of content learning and essential experiences for training, whereas the other institution obtained better evaluations regarding professional practice.

CONCLUSION

The profile of academic experiences, graduate education, and entry into the job market varied according to the evaluated institution. The findings favored critical-reflective analysis of the institutions' pedagogical projects.

Managerial competences of researchers from Nursing research groups

Objective:

to analyze the managerial competences of researchers from research groups linked to a Graduate Program in Nursing.

Method:

a cross-sectional study with researchers from Nursing research groups, which analyzed the managerial competences by means of a Scale of Managerial Competences in Research Groups containing 50 items related to people management and research results (Factor 1) and resource provisioning and people management (Factor 2), with answers 4 and 5 considered as sufficient dexterity for each competence analyzed. For data analysis, logistic regression was used.

Results:

of the 219 participants evaluated, the prevalence was 48.86% of sufficient dexterity for factor 1 and 32.88% of sufficient dexterity for factor 2; with 41.21% of sufficient dexterity for Managerial Competences in research groups. A significant difference was identified in the proportions of the managerial competences for schooling, age group and performance in the group (p≤0.001). There were differences in mean age, time of experience with research and participation in the research group (p≤0.001), between the participants with sufficient and insufficient dexterity for the managerial competences.

Conclusion:

the results obtained in this study emphasize the potential of the research groups for the development of managerial competences of Nursing researchers, especially for people management.

The COVID-19 pandemic and nurses' attitudes toward death

Objective:

to analyze nurses’ attitudes toward death in a hospital context after the critical period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal.

Method:

this quantitative, descriptive, exploratory study was conducted in a university hospital and addressed 995 nurses. Revised Death Attitude Profile (DAP-R) was used to collect data, which were analyzed using analytical and inferential statistics.

Results:

the nurses most frequently agreed with the statements concerning the Neutral/Neutrality Acceptance and Fear. Age, marital status, profession, and unit of work influenced the nurses’ attitudes toward death. During the critical pandemic period, the nurses providing care to patients with COVID-19 presented the following means: Fear (28.89/±8.521) and Avoidance Acceptance (18.35/±7.116), which were higher than the mean obtained in the Escape Acceptance dimension, with significant differences (p=0.004).

Conclusion:

the nurses held Fear and Avoidance attitudes, revealing the need to qualify and support Nursing workers to cope with the death of those they provide care and manage pandemics and catastrophes.

Scientific integrity among nursing students participating in the Scientific Initiation Program: An exploratory study

Objective:

To know the positions and practices adopted by nursing students in scientific initiation programs about the principles of scientific integrity in the different stages of the process of doing science.

Method:

An exploratory study of a quantitative nature, in which nursing student participants of the Scientific Initiation Program from the Federal District were interviewed.

Results:

Fifty (50) nursing students participated in the study. Most of the interviewed participants presented good notions about the process of conducting research in its different stages. Nevertheless, it was found that even though they were familiar with good scientific practices, students did not always behave in the most responsible manner. It was observed that the knowledge on topics related to the ethics of the scientific process was predominantly obtained through formal education, consisting of classes and courses. Nonetheless, the importance of complementary spaces such as research and research groups is recognized.

Conclusion:

Research experiences are important educational and vocational training spaces for students. Therefore, good research practices need to be included early in the academic curriculum.

Interpersonal communication competence among nursing students

OBJECTIVE

To identify the level of interpersonal communication competence among nursing students and to correlate its domains with sociodemographic and academic variables.

METHOD

This is a correlational study, developed through a multicenter research project in six federal universities in Brazil. Data from 1,079 nursing students were collected through a questionnaire with sociodemographic and academic variables and the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULTS

The mean of the sum of the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale was 63.74 (± 7.6). The domains "availability" and "environment control" had, respectively, the highest and lowest averages. There was a statistically significant difference between the sum of the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale and the variables age, marital status, participation in a research/extension group, and paid professional activity.

CONCLUSION

This study contributed to identify the level of interpersonal communication competence of nursing students in the Brazilian reality, providing useful information for education in the area.

Conhecimento do enfermeiro da atenção primária à saúde sobre a indicação de coberturas especiais

Objetivo: Identificar o conhecimento dos enfermeiros da atenção primária à saúde de um município sobre indicação de coberturas especiais. Método: Estudo exploratório, descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa realizado com 101 enfermeiros em 109 unidades de saúde da atenção primária em saúde por meio de instrumento estruturado. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente com a distribuição de frequência, percentis, média, mediana, desvio padrão, coeficiente de variação, intervalo de confiança, p-valor e teste de igualdade de duas proporções para comparar o grupo que tem capacitação/aperfeiçoamento na área com o grupo que não tem. Resultados: Sobre a indicação da cobertura, 79,2% referiu que se destina a controlar o exsudato e o tecido não viável, e a indicação com maior porcentagem de acertos para utilização em feridas foi a cobertura hidrofibra de prata e hidrocoloide com prata. Conclusão: Enfermeiros da atenção primária com cursos de capacitação/aperfeiçoamento não têm conhecimento suficiente para indicação das coberturas.

Knowledge of nurses in primary health care about the indication of special coverage

Objective: To identify the knowledge of nurses in primary health care in a municipality about the indication of special coverage. Method: An exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach performed with 101 nurses in 109 health units of primary health care through a structured instrument. The data were statistically analyzed with frequency distribution, percentiles, average, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, confidence interval, p-value and two-proportion equality test to compare the group that has qualification/improvement in the area with the group do not have. Results: About the indication of the coverage, 79.2% reported that it is intended to control exudate and non-viable tissue, and the indication with the highest percentage of correct answers for use in wounds was the silver hydrofibra coverage and hydrocolloid with silver. Conclusion: Primary care nurses with qualification/ improvement courses do not have enough knowledge to indicate the coverage.
