[Adaptation and validation of the "Positions on Nursing Diagnosis" tool to Portuguese language]

Translation and psychometric properties of the Persian version of the position on nursing diagnosis scale

AIM

To validate the Positions on Nursing Diagnosis scale developed by Lunney and Krenz (1992) in Persian language.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional survey.

METHODS

A methodological study conducted in two stages of translation (by applying the forward and back-translation method) and psychometric assessment was conducted in a western area of Iran. The scale was completed by 600 nurses selected by quota method from different wards of four provinces. Date of data collection is 1-April-2019 to 1-Dec-2019.

RESULTS

The Positions on Nursing Diagnosis scale showed acceptable content validity with index of 0.97. The 20 items of the Positions on Nursing Diagnosis scale load on four factors. The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated the good fit of the model's indicators. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole instrument was 0.85. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.86.

Attitudes of nurses from a public teaching hospital regarding the nursing process

OBJECTIVE

To measure the attitudes of nurses on nursing process at a public teaching hospital.

METHOD

A cross-sectional and analytical study conducted with nurses at a tertiary hospital. It was applied an instrument to characterize sample, as well as the Positions on the Nursing Process instrument, which measures nurses' attitudes in relation to the nursing process. There are 20 items to be considered, in which the minimum possible value is 20 and the maximum of 140. The data were submitted to descriptive statistics and the variables of interest were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney, Student's t-test, Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression models, as appropriate.

RESULTS

In a sample of 226 nurses, 80.5% (182) stated that they performed pdaily. The mean score of the instrument was 102.50 (SD = 21.76). The item "routine/creative" had a lower score (3.54), while "unimportant/important" had a higher score (5.81).

CONCLUSION

The nurses reported being in favor and presented positive attitudes about nursing process, in addition to considering it important, but routine, as well as affirming little or no contact with research, classes or events on the subject.

Psychometric evaluation of the Positions on Nursing Diagnosis scale

AIM

To study the psychometric properties of the Positions on Nursing Diagnosis (PND) scale.

BACKGROUND

The PND is a scale to measure nurses' attitudes toward nursing diagnosis. In previous studies, reliability of the scale was supported but its construct validity is still unclear with studies reporting both one-factor and three-factor models.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 262 nurses enrolled from one general public hospital and three long-term care facilities in Italy. Construct validity was assessed with confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion and contrasting-group validities were tested, as well as internal consistency reliability.

RESULTS

Confirmatory factor analysis showed the adequacy of a one-factor model of the PND scale. Criterion and contrasting-group validities were supportive, as was internal consistency reliability.

CONCLUSIONS

The PND is a valid and reliable scale to measure nurses' attitudes toward nursing diagnosis. Its use in practice and research is recommended.

[A short form of the positions on nursing diagnosis scale: development and psychometric testing]

The Positions on Nursing Diagnosis (PND) is a scale that uses the semantic differential technique to measure nurses' attitudes towards the nursing diagnosis concept. The aim of this study was to develop a shortened form of the Spanish version of this scale and evaluate its psychometric properties and efficiency. A double theoretical-empirical approach was used to obtain a short form of the PND, the PND-7-SV, which would be equivalent to the original. Using a cross-sectional survey design, the reliability (internal consistency and test-retest reliability), construct (exploratory factor analysis, known-groups technique and discriminant validity) and criterion-related validity (concurrent validity), sensitivity to change and efficiency of the PND-7-SV were assessed in a sample of 476 Spanish nursing students. The results endorsed the utility of the PND-7-SV to measure attitudes toward nursing diagnosis in an equivalent manner to the complete form of the scale and in a shorter time.

[Attitudes of nursing staff related to the nursing process]

The aims of the study were to describe nurses' positions on nursing process and their perception of power; and to analyse associations between positions on nursing process, power perception and selected variables. One thousand six hundred and five nurses (86.9% female, mean age=44.12 years, SD=9.55) participated in the study. Mean score on the Positions on Nursing Process (PNP) tool was 112.37 (SD=22.28); and on the Power as Knowing Participation in Change Tool - Brazilian Version (PKPCT) was 281.12 (SD=38.72). Baccalaureate nurses had statistically higher scores on PNP and PKPCT than auxiliary nurses. There was positive and moderate correlation between PNP and PKPCT scores. Auxiliary nurses' scores on PNP were associated with sex and post-graduation; auxiliary nurses' scores on PKPCT were associated with sex. For baccalaureate nurses there was association between PKPCT and administrative position. More studies should be developed in order to identify variables potentially associated with the use of nursing process in clinical practice.
