Abstract
The scope of this article is to identify factors associated with personal autonomy among the elderly. It is a systematic review of analytical epidemiological studies selected from the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Lilacs databases, without time and language constraints. The search located 3,435 articles and selection was conducted in two phases: reading of abstracts and entire articles, with inclusion and exclusion criteria, by two independent reviewers, resulting in seven selected studies. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale protocol. All studies included were of sectional design and analyzed autonomy from the perspective of the perception of increased autonomy. The instruments used were the Hertz Perceived Entity of Autonomy Scale and the Chinese version of Perceived Enactment of Autonomy Scale. The factors associated with the autonomy of the elderly identified were grouped by functionality, family relations, interpersonal relations, life perception, satisfaction with health services, demographic factors, schooling, general health status and quality of life. The study of personal autonomy among the elderly presented a multifactorial and biopsychosocial character, although it is a recent theme in which further research with more detailed scientific evidence is necessary.

Abstract
The present study analyzed the profile of publications related to the health of the older adults in the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, in terms of quantitative evolution, methodological approach, thematic and institutions involved. The selection of articles considered the title, abstract and descriptors and covered all the content published between 1996 and 2019. The articles included were classified according to the year of publication, type, theme, methodological approach and institutional link of the first author. Data analysis was based on absolute and relative frequencies, in addition to summary (mean) and variability (standard deviation) measures. The results showed a consistent increase in publications on the health of the older adults in the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, with a predominance of the quantitative approach, mainly focused on investigating the topic related to health conditions and the use of health services and supplies. In the majority, the main author was linked to a public teaching/research institution, located in the Southeast region. The results indicate that the journal contributed to give greater visibility to the health of the older adults, but that the publications on this theme reproduce the inequality observed in the national scientific production.

Abstract
Abstract This article aims to perform an analysis of the factors that determine the self-perception of oral health of Brazilians, based on a multidimensional methodology basis. This is a cross-sectional study with data from a national survey. A household interview was conducted with a sample of 60,202 adults. Self-perception of oral health was considered the outcome variable and sociodemographic characteristics, self-care and oral health condition, use of dental services, general health and work condition as independent variables. The dimensionality reduction test was used and the variables that showed a relationship were submitted to logistic regression. The negative oral health condition was related to difficulty feeding, negative evaluation of the last dental appointment, negative self-perception of general health condition, not flossing, upper dental loss, and reason for the last dental appointment. The use of a multidimensional methodological basis was able to design explanatory models for the self-perception of oral health of Brazilian adults, and these results should be considered in the implementation, evaluation, and qualification of the oral health network.

Abstract
As morbidades associadas à percepção negativa da saúde foram: asma/bronquite (OR:2,74; IC95%:1,61-4,67), insônia (OR:1,80; IC95%:1,25-2,58) e problemas cardíacos (OR:1,77; IC95%:1,18-2,68).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Self-perceived health reported by older adults is a tool of great importance for the health care system as it provides an indicator representing physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of health. OBJECTIVE: To report how a group of older adults covered by a health insurance plan evaluate their self-perceived health and which variables influence their perception. METHOD: This quantitative cross-sectional study included 148 older adults living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2017. The study variables were sex, age, marital status, performance in basic activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living, sleep quality, leisure activity, number of diseases, and use of continuous medication. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test, χ2 test, or Fisher’s exact test, and logistic regression was used. RESULTS: Significant relationships were observed between poor self-perceived health and the following variables: being female, polypharmacy, number of diseases, sleep quality, and performance in instrumental activities of daily living. Dependence on the instrumental activities of daily living made these older adults 5.33 times more likely to have poor self-perceived health. Each comorbidity added to the health status of this group increased the chance of poor self-perceived health by 1.39 times. CONCLUSION: Self-perceived
health in this group of older adults is influenced by several variables; however, degree of dependence and number of diseases were those with the greatest impact.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate factors associated with the treatment adherence of 150 elderly diabetics assisted in gerontogeriatric outpatient service in northeastern Brazil. Full adherence to therapy was self-reported by 27.3% of the elderly. In the bivariate analysis, adherence was associated with self-perceived health, beliefs in the use of medication, understanding explanations about diabetes and professional responsible for treatment guidance. After analysis adjustment, only beliefs in medicine were significant when comparing non-adherence with full adherence (OR = 9.65; CI95% 1.6; 56.6) and non-adherence with partial adherence (OR = 18.15; CI95% 3.5;95.4). It can be concluded that full adherence to diabetes treatment is low and is associated with beliefs in medications for disease control. It is necessary to develop additional studies to better define the role of health beliefs and practices of care among elderly assisted in primary health care.

Abstract
This study sought to establish the socioeconomic and health factors associated with quality of life among the elderly in the community. An analytical study with a cross-sectional and quantitative approach was conducted in 2012 and 2013 with 3430 senior citizens in 24 municipalities in the Southern Triangle Macro-region of the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. A structured questionnaire was used for socioeconomic and health variables, as well as the Katz scale, the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment for Older Adults (WHOQOL-OLD). Descriptive, bivariate statistical analysis was performed and a multiple linear regression model (p < 0.05) was created. Lower quality of life (QoL) scores were found in the environment and autonomy domains associated with advanced age, lack of schooling and income, a negative perception of health and functional disability. The salient key factor was negative health perception. The conclusion drawn was that socioeconomic and health factors were associated with the quality of life of the elderly, highlighting the lowest scores in the environmental domain and from the aspect of autonomy, a key influencing factor being negative health perception.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious health problem that has significant effects on the life status of elderly persons. Use of the empowerment approach is necessary for health promotion in older people with COPD, but little attention has so far been paid to all the dimensions of empowerment in the management of COPD, which would provide useful knowledge regarding elders with COPD. This article reports on a study exploring people's experiences of the empowerment of older people with COPD. This study adopted an exploratory qualitative design and was carried out using grounded theory methodology. Grounded theory was considered appropriate for this study because of its focus on how people respond to and act on the problems that they encounter. We collected data by conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews and taking field notes. Twenty-four participants were selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that in encountering the complexity of disease and in response to difficulties induced by COPD, three strategies were applied. Elderly persons with COPD, their family caregivers, and professional team members engaged in "managing life with COPD," "striving to keep abreast of life," "preparing for battle with disease," and "helping to stabilize the elder's life." The outcome of these strategies was "co-existence with disease." The potential of "managing life with COPD" was influenced by the following factors: "co-existence with ageing," "personal potential," "a challenged health system," and "weak social support." "Managing life with COPD" enables the elder to feel in control and live optimally. This is a fragile balance, however, and the unpredictability of COPD can tip the elder into "self-efficacy." Understanding the experiences of the empowerment process of older people with COPD can help health professionals provide more focused elderly care.

Abstract
Functionality is a crucial dimension of the health of the elderly. The aim of this work is to investigate the elements that comprise the significance of disability for the elderly residents of the city of Bambuí in the state of Minas Gerais. A qualitative approach was adopted in which the model of signs, significance and actions was used in both data collection and analysis. Interviews were conducted with 57 elderly individuals (30 women; 27 men) ranging from 61 to 96 years of age registered in primary care units. The participants interpret functionality/disability (disease) as "being able to cope/not being able to cope" or "being a burden" (illness) to others. "Not being able to cope" refers to the inexorable functional loss inherent to the aging process, while "being a burden" relates to the permanent condition of generating pain and suffering to both patient and care giver. The way to deal with the "not being able to cope" condition is related to resignation. On the other hand, praying is the way to deal with "being a burden." Religion and resignation can help during critical moments, though they also reveal the lack of resources and alternatives for support and intervention in the most severe cases.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
This was an analytical, cross-sectional household survey study aimed at describing the sociodemographic characteristics, health and quality of life of elderly men, and to verify the socioeconomic and health factors related to quality of life. Participants in this study included 804 elderly men. Data were collected using the following instruments: Older Americans Resources and Services scale (OARS), the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment for Older Adults (WHOQOL-OLD). Descriptive analysis, student's t-test, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression (p<0.05) were used. The prevalent characteristics were: individuals 60-70 years old, married, 4-8 years of education, and a minimum wage income. The lowest quality of life scores were in the physical domain and autonomy facet, and were associated with: the absence of a companion, education, low income, higher number of comorbidities, and functional disability. Functional disability had the strongest influence on the quality of life, except for the physical domain and intimacy facet.

Abstract

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To correlate functional ability and quality of life of elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS Cross-sectional study composed of 40 elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. We used the following instruments: identification questionnaire, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-OLD (WHOQOL-OLD). The significance level was 0.05 (5%), and confidence intervals were 95%. For statistical analysis we used parametric statistical tests, descriptive analysis, test for equality of two proportions, Pearson's correlation, correlation test, and analysis of variance. RESULTS The mean age (± standard deviation) was 74.1 (± 6.7) years, and 47.5% of patients had osteoarthritis in both knees. Moderate pain was reported by 45% of patients when they walked on a flat plane and 40% when they were seated or lying down; 55% had severe or very severe pain when climbing or descending stairs; 50% reported moderate joint stiffness after sitting, lying, or resting; and 65% reported moderate or little stiffness after waking. In physical function, 60% of patients had moderate or severe difficulty in descending stairs and 67.5%, when climbing stairs; 60% reported severe or very severe difficulty in getting in and out of the car, and 70%, when performing strenuous housework. The correlation with WHOQOL-OLD and WOMAC was negative and not significant except for autonomy, which was significant. Sedentary and elderly women who used walking aid devices had worse WOMAC functional capacity, but this finding was not statistically significant. In WHOQOL-OLD, volunteers scored higher on social participation and engagement in physical activity on autonomy, which was statistically significant compared with the nonvoluntary and sedentary domains, respectively. CONCLUSION It is possible to have a good quality of life even with functional impairment from knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract
A amostra compreendeu 820 adolescentes, 2715 adultos e 385 idosos.

Abstract
Utilizaram-se os instrumentos: estruturados World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) e Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment for Older Adults (WHOQOL-OLD).

Abstract
Participaram do estudo 1.432 idosos.

Abstract
