First-Episode Psychosis from the Perspective of Family Members

The purpose of the current study was to explore family members' perceptions of the causes of first-episode psychosis (FEP). A qualitative study with 68 family members of patients with FEP was performed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and submitted for thematic analysis. The attributions for FEP were: use of psychoactive substances as a trigger; influence of genetic and personal factors; exposure to stressful life events; and lack of previous health care and knowledge about psychotic symptoms. Knowledge of possible attributions for the onset of psychosis may be valuable in optimizing early identification of individuals with FEP. Patterns of knowledge used by nurses in caring for the patient in the first psychotic outbreak

Abstract Objective: To know how the nurse provides care in the first psychotic outbreak of patients, and to identify the Barbara Carper patterns of knowing used for this action. Methods: A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was performed in four Psychosocial Care Centers and in a psychiatric ward of a university hospital. Data collection was carried out with ten nurses participating in semi-structured interviews using the following guiding question: "Tell me your experience in caring for a patient in their first psychotic outbreak". Results: Carper's fundamental ways of knowing (empirical, aesthetic, ethical and personal) were identified in the caring of the patient in their first psychotic outbreak. Conclusion and Implications: A fragmented practice is implied when patterns of knowledge are taken in isolation. This reflects on specific actions of nursing work, such as the nursing practice and its stages.

Ajustamento familiar após o surgimento da esquizofrenia

Considera-se que, quando ocorre o primeiro episódio da esquizofrenia, a vida familiar é interrompida e a sua trajetória de vida pode ser modificada. Em vista disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer a trajetória de famílias nos primeiros cinco anos de convivência com a doença mental, identificando o seu processo de ajustamento. A pesquisa está fundamentada no Interacionismo Simbólico. Foram realizadas entrevistas com 23 familiares de 21 portadores de esquizofrenia. A análise foi realizada visando à determinação de uma linha do tempo, que permitiu descrever o processo de ajustamento familiar através de três momentos: Percebendo a Mudança, Diagnóstico e Início do Tratamento, e Seguindo em Frente. Conclui-se que todas as fases apresentadas neste projeto são ricas e podem ser mais exploradas.

Significação da psicose pelo sujeito e seus efeitos para a clínica da enfermagem

Objetivou-se identificar a apreensão do paciente acerca de sua experiência psíquica diante da psicose, indicando uma direção de tratamento à luz da leitura psicanalítica. Estudo qualitativo, realizado com nove pacientes. A análise ocorreu através de categorização dos discursos. Os sujeitos indicaram preocupação em construir um lugar onde sua experiência psíquica seja considerada em seu cotidiano. Com os profissionais de saúde mental, o sujeito pode encontrar um novo significante, criar novos significados, levando à estabilização dos sintomas, que provêm da criação da metáfora delirante. A sequência de perdas na psicose dá lugar a ganhos, em que o barramento do Outro proporciona a subjetivação de um novo lugar para esse sujeito, contribuindo para a construção de um novo projeto de vida.

[Analysis of the prevalence of psychic disorders in the metropolitan region of Recife]

Mental health is a state of well-being, in which the individual is aware of its capacities, capable of coping with the ordinary stress of everyday life, of working productively and of functioning in society. The purpose of the present work is a quantitative analysis of the prevalence of psychic disorders, using references such as sex, age, kind of disorder and care delivered to the carriers. Social assistants of three psychiatric hospitals of the Metropolitan Region of Recife - the Psychiatric Hospital Ulysses Pernambucano, the Nucleus for Psychosocial Care of Pernambuco (NAPPE) and the Hospital Colony Alcides Codeceira - answered an adapted version of the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). The results showed a higher incidence of disorders in women in the age group between 41 and 60 years. Schizophrenia was the most frequently observed kind of mental disorder. Among the different treatments offered were drug therapy and individual and group therapy, the latter showing better results.
